Project DEATH MACHINE

Greetings ladies and gents,

I re-built a '69 bird back in high school and drive it all the way through college until someone rear-ended me coming back from a job interview (see below). Since then, I've lived in apartments all over the world and have finally settled down into a house. I managed to snag a 69 firebird shell on ebay that was already painted and came with a lot of extra parts. I just got the black one delivered to my house last week and will retrieve the restored/wrecked one from West TX in a few weeks. It shouldn't be a big deal to move all the necessary interior pieces from the old car into the new one.

Here's a list of parts that were included with the sale of the black one. I think I got my money's worth :)

Detroit Speed and Engineering mini tub kit
DS&E rear leaf springs 2” lower than stock
DS&E stainless steel gas tank.
DS&E weld in sub frame connectors.
DS&E 7 speed wind shield wiper motor (all wired and installed with factory knob)
Hotchkis front coil springs, sway bar (front and rear) 2" lower
All new shocks.
Rear disc brakes
Currie Ford 9”with 3.73 posi rearend, (disc brakes and narrowed 2” on each side. )
1969 Trans Am rear spoiler
Painless wiring kit.
Power window and locks with two remotes
Dakota digital dash.
All AC under the dash is done (Vintage Air - doesn't have connections through firewall though)
New dash pad and face.
New Headliner
New front windshield all other glass is perfect.
All interior and exterior paint is done, body is near flawless.
Magnaflow exhaust (seemingly full system)
Stock firewall removed and smooth plate welded in.
Also included was a Pontiac 400 engine with ceramic coated headers, but won't be used in the build.

I'm looking at putting in an LS2 with a T-56 6-speed. I was originally thinking about an automatic but I prefer the control of the manual. With the mini-tub, I plan on running approximately a 10 or 11" tire in the back and as wide as I can fit in the front and still be tucked in. I'm thinking about a 17"/18" combo, but that's for a little bit later.

So, I'm scrounging ebay, CL, all the usual places for LS2's and there seem to be different varieties. I've also done some extensive searching in the threads here - this site is fantastic!

So, my first question (hopefully I can get some of them answered here so I don't have to litter the other forums with duplicity) is what model LS2 should I be looking at? I currently have the stock spindles and sub-frame in the front (might be changing the spindles later though depending on what discs they work with). It appears that some LS2's have different configurations of the alternator and A/C compressor. Should I try to stick with a particular make a model (GTO vs Vette vs whatever) to accomodate the fitment and aftermarket A/C compressor required for the Vintage Air system? (Should I consider LS6's for the same amount of power?) I'll also be running headers later so they'll have to clear the stock gear box unless I convert to a rack and pinion setup.

It looks like I can get a used combo for around $5-$6k on ebay - if someone has a reference for a better place to procure one though, please let me know.

Anyway, thanks in advance for the replies and I'm glad I stumbled upon this site some time ago. Keep up the good work. And now...for the goods...

the black bird looks great. but id rather have the convertible. i have a 69 t/a convert. i love it and cringed when i looked at the photos. i would not part it out and junk it. everything can be fixed,i have fixed worse.atleast save the tags for a new shell someday. everything on the birds are the same as camaros,so whatever there doing to 69 camaros on this site is the same as what you can do

Nice Project! I'm not sure about the differences in LS engines, but if you want to pick something up for a reasonable price, check out the parts for sale section on Lateral-g. There's a place called Cleveland pick-a-part that advertises on there all the time. Seems like some pretty good deals.

For front disc brakes, I know that there is a way to fit C5/C6 vette brakes on. Check out Kore3.com. They have conversion brackets or the whole setup.

That photo doesn't really show the extent of the damage. Yes, it could probably be fixed, but I don't really have the means to take on a project of that magnitude. It's a little bit worse on the passenger side, as the rear of the body was rotated forward a good six inches into the doors, so the entire sub-frame is fubared. I'll be moving a lot of the trim pieces over to the new machine and the parts that I can't I'll be sending to good homes. I think the drive shaft was even pushed into the TH400 upon impact.

The convertible was okay, but I didn't really use it enough to justify it. Plus, it was super loud going down the highway. I'm ready for a coupe :)

I'll check out the brake kits. Thanks. Always good to see other first gen firebird enthusiasts.

Yes, I'll be partially parting out the firebird, but probably only after I've finished moving everything I need into the black one. That may be a month or two away.

Nah, it was some douche in a Ford Ranger with a grill guard :\

Great start for the project. I too have a 69 T/A vert. Looks like all the hard work is done and now you get to do the fun stuff. Here is my thread for my build www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31227. That looks like a Texas plate on the convertible, is that right?

Good luck with the build and the guys here at Pro-touring are the best at helping with your questions.

Thanks. I'll check out your project when I get home (pics are blocked from work).

Yes, a lot of the work has already been done. I just didn't feel like doing all that work again since I have already done it once and "paid my dues"...hehe. Plus, I can handle the mechanic stuff but I'm not near as proficient at bodywork activities.

Yeppers, I'm originally from West TX and reside in Houston now. The purple one was originally a Miami car (think painted over ex-rustbucket).

Ok, while waiting for some responses in my wheel and brake threads :smoke: I thought I'd post a few more photos...

I took the gas tank out a few days back since I wasn't sure if it had a sending unit in it. The car came with a separate sending unit in a box, so I had some reservations about the tank installation.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/06/4662197684_cbb98e541c_o-1.jpg

Turns out, it did! I took it out and then re-installed it to make sure the orientation was correct. I'm guessing this one is from DS&E to match the tank. I'm not sure at this point how the variable amps will mate up to the Dakota Digital gauge, which reads %.

I also found some misc. interior pieces and I'm not exactly sure where they go since I'm a previous convertible owner. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the advice. The long skinny piece is labeled "rear seat" but I couldn't locate where exactly it would go.

Also, it looks like these Thorley headers that came with the car are from a Pontiac 400 which I'll probably be posting in the for sale section. They look pretty stout.

the top picture is the headliner corner trim. Those go on the inside rear, bottom corners where the glass and sail panels meet. not exactly sure on the long piece, but I wonder if that long piece bolts to the package tray area somehow along the top. I'll have to check mine tonight.

thats a sweet ass bike too.

Hey man, did you have a chance to check on that long piece? I tried to mate it up to something on the rear package tray and couldn't find anything.

no, I actually forgot to look, sorry. I'll check this afternoon. I don't think ts the wire loom for the engine compartment, I think that's a plastic type of piece for that.

Sweet, thanks for taking interest. I'll try and take some better photos of the cross-section. It has the same curvature as the front edge of the back speaker panel, but I tried to match up the holes with the sheet metal and nothing lined up. But hey, I don't consider a project completed successfully unless I end up with a few extra bolts.

Josh69
06-08-2010, 09:24 AM
That long piece is the top trim for a fold down rear seat. It goes on the top (leading) edge that would essentially rest against the package tray when the seat is in the 'up' position, which is why it matches as you've found. Do you have a folding rear seat? If not, I don't think you need it.

ModernMuseum
06-09-2010, 04:12 AM
Well, I don't really have a rear seat at all at this point. lol. The one that came with the car looks like it sat outside for about 30 years. I don't think it's folding though. I don't really see any advantage of a foldilng rear seat in these cars anyway. I still have ones from my convertible which are in decent shape though. It looks like the rear clips are the same, so I'm guessing they'll clip right on just like the convertible.

edit: it is a deluxe interior so it may in fact be a fold-down. the release handle is long gone though.

ModernMuseum

I am in need of some replacement deluxe door panels. The people on CL want an arm and a leg for these, when they're available.

I found a place on bay that sells the firebird and camaro version of the deluxe panel. The Camaro version actually looks a bit less plain since it has an extra ridge in it. I assume that the clips where the mate to the door are the same.

Can anyone verify this, as I'd like to go with the Camaro panels since they look better and they're slightly cheaper. It looks like the only difference may be how the grab bars are connected. I think the firebirds have a solid chrome trim between the mating points and the camaros have two separate trim pieces.

I haven't looked that close at the Camaro specific panels, but I thought the only difference was the extra curved stainless trim piece on the camaro panel, not the mold itself. You can use either style of pull handle backing plate on the Firebird door. I have the one piece style, but the two piece will work if you have that preference. They fit the same, the doors are interchangeable. I got mine from Year One, and they fit like a glove. I know some guys have horror stories about the deluxe doors, but mine are absolutely perfect and installed with no gaps, no problems. I lined up the push clips and it popped in place. I think I had to trim out some extra plastic for the clips on the backside to slide them into position better, that was it. Mine are made by Al Knoch interiors, so I would make sure that's what you're getting....they are likely the only supplier, but I've heard various reports of horribly fitting panels that were either an earlier version, or a different mfgr.

The folding rear seats are quite valuable, so if you have the frames and don't want it, try selling it...it's a heavy SOB. I have one in my car. There should be a sheetmetal backing that screws/bolts onto the seat back cushion that would have carpet glued to it to serve as a shelf when the seat is lowered. It is that piece that your long trim piece would screw down onto, and it is also what the hinge on either side bolts onto through the vinyl. Yes, it's really quite pointless to have, because there is still no access to the trunk. I can take some pics of my set-up if you need it. The latch isn't hard to find, but the metal backing might be if you don't have it, I'd maybe just look for a normal seat. I honestly don't know how a 'regular' seatback hooks in to the car, so that is something to take into account. You may be missing those brackets.

How some of you goons stuff 335's under there, I have no idea. These are PLENTY wide for me :)

Tiresdirect is awesome. I ordered these two on Tuesday, selected standard shipping and they arrived yesterday. Fantastic service.

I took two of the measurements for the BS last night. I'll take the measurements for the front either tonight or over the weekend. The limiting factor on the inside is definitely the leaf springs.

Hehe. It's so friggin' hot here in the summer that I hardly have time to ride. Yeah, the wheels will be solid black: Boze Pro-Touring. The black and red combo is awesome, but I think I'm just going to do the solid black thing for now and I can add the stripe later if necessary :)

This is the bit of hard fuel line from Year One that came with the car. Does anyone have any idea how this thing goes on the car? It looks like the long piece requires another bend because it's so long, but I don't know where. It looks as if it's bent down for packaging reasons.

Anyone know anything about the small piece?

Josh69
08-03-2010, 10:43 AM
The long piece was likely bent with a radius for shipping, you can straighten it back out. The little hook on one end points towards the gas tank, then it rides the inside of the rear frame rail, then crosses over to the outside for the run up the front subframe, then back over the top of that into the engine bay. To be honest, I could not figure out the exact way to mount it in the engine bay. I cut mine off about 8-10" or so behind the crossmember. I reshaped the small part to fit behind the crossmember and share mounting holes with the brake line brackets. I went through the pass side engine mount bracket. I used rubber line to connect the two hard lines on the passenger side. Then another short run of rubber line to the pump from the hardline along the crossmember.

I have the assembly manuals, but could not make sense of it. The bends in the short piece didn't correspond with anything so I just made it work. It'd be nice to tear apart an original car for once to know these things!

Sweet, thx Josh. I'm not sure I'll be able to figure it out though. I'm afraid that if I bend it where I think it should be bent that it will just kink. I may end up just trying to sell it and find some high pressure flexible stuff.

I think I'm actually going to go with Forgelines as well instead of the Boze. So many decisions....

I started installing the stock fuel line tonight. I finally got it bent into shape....just have to tack it in now.

Does anyone know if I can still use the X-brace under the transmission if I install a T56? It looks like there's about 3" from the stock tranny mount to the front of the X-brace, so if the T56 is longer, it might not work.

Wheels are ordered courtesy of Frank - appreciate all the help.

It's been pretty hectic selling parts from the donor car and trying to find parts for the new one. However, I managed to do some interior work this weekend. I'm almost finished with the two-layer sound deadening and made a trunk divider as well. It's not the prettiest thing I've ever done, but it'll do I guess. I had to get the the folks at Home Depot to cut it into several pieces so I could fit it in the WRX, but I couldn't fit the last piece inside, so I left it in the parking lot

ps - If I'm behind on getting you parts, just keep hounding me. :)

I got the hellas installed and the front spoiler. I still need to add another support brace on the driver's side horn.

I'm trying to find a good place for all the sensors (bottom) for the Passport SRX radar. I got in on CL about a year ago for super cheap. The two big ones are laser shifters and the big one is the radar sensor for the front. There's another shifter that I installed on the rear license plate bracket.

btw, that little air wrench under the car is one of the most awesome tools I have. It makes removing bolts a snap.

I found a buddy who has a MIG - I plan to get the bars welded on this friday, pretty or not.

Hehe, yeah, I had to carry that one over from the WRX. Those horns are awesome and I wouldn't have any other.

Got the cage welded in. My welds are, of course, prettiest where no one will see them. The ones that are visible are going to take some grinding. All were done using a flux core 110V MIG.

I'm going to try to use everclear metal glaze or a rage product to fill in the low points before painting.

Damn, almost 2 months since updates :\

Got the roll cage finished :) It came out pretty well:

Removing all the bagillion screws to change out the wheel hoops. The stainless hardware is pretty soft:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/5183447864_16a73e02aa_z-1.jpg

I don't think I'm going to re-seal them (they're 3-piece). I've heard stories of people having to pry them apart. I'm going to see if I can work some tricks to keep them in slight compression while I'm changing the hoops.

Installing the A/C stuff:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/5183447990_3809065718_z-1.jpg

Apparently the 6x9's I have stick up some...i.e. a lot :unamused: . They're 10 years old anyway, so I think I'm just going to get some new ones. After measuring, the holes that someone cut in the back panel don't line up with my fiberglass cover :unamused:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/5182848513_7a5dfa5dcb_z-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/5183447966_c31e93d5d6_z-1.jpg

Raising the speaker covers with some grommets...still not enough though :unamused:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/5183447908_c9878b0263_z-1.jpg

I'm hoping the speaker covers will hide the fact that the speakers aren't centered, because it was a b*tch to drill those holes (for the studs that are attached to the fiberglass panel) laying in the trunk. Almost every hole was on a triangular ridge.

ModernMuseum

Also, if you plan on installing a cage (DSE, whatever), I don't recommend blowing $180 on the pre-formed Marquez Bro's fiberglass rear dash panel. You're just going to have to hack it up...a lot. Plus, the holes don't come pre-cut for the speakers. I'd say this is one of the silliest buys to date and this money would have been merited elsewhere.

I had the same problem with a new set of speakers. I took the old speakers and broke the top mount off. I then centered the top portion on my table saw and cut it in half. That gave me the extra thickness that I needed to get the tweeters under the package tray.

ModernMuseum
11-18-2010, 05:19 AM
So you used the top rim of the old speakers as a spacer for the new speakers? I was intially planning on leaving the speaker covers rasied ~3/8" just for show, but now I'm thinking that flush would look better.

After travling to near the end of the internet, which happens to be somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin, I finally found a short hub adapter from NRG for momo steering wheels. If you haven't seen the normal momo hub adapters, they look like a long, serrated section of alien penis. Bigger is not always better in this case. Anyway, picked up both of these from NRG (ebay / amazon):

Yes, but I also used the flat rear shelf which had the speaker holes in the fabric. I was going for the stock look. So I did not use any upper grills. But at least this way it let me mount the speakers lower under the shelf panel.

Ah, I gotcha. Thanks. I think I may have to jointly space out the speakers and the speaker covers. What speakers did you use and where did you get the from? The old Polks I had lasted a good while, so I'm thinking about just going with them again.

umm...yeah. The NRG slim quick release will not work with the NRG slim hub. Time to get creative!

I think I may have to cut about 3/4" off the steering wheel shaft to make it fit. Otherwise it's thick hub city.

Battery is in.... anyone know of any good battery tenders?
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/5211112817_c24cf40ec4_o-1.jpg

I think I've found a way to get the NRG slim hub and the NRG slim quick release to work together. The tricky thing is getting the power to the horn switch. I think I'm going to use a spring to carry the power from the inner column to the switch. To make it work with the stock components, I'd have to cut the steering wheel shaft. After reading into the instructions, it states that the NRG slim hub is NOT designed to work with the NRG thin quick release. Lame and misleading :) . Oh, well. I plan on making it work without cutting the shaft.

Looking real nice. A great idea on the horns. Given the distracted driving going on a serious wake up is sometimes needed and you don't want to have a horn that goes "excuse me" you want "Wake the **** up!" when the jerk is wandering into your lane.

How do they compare to the factory horns is sound level?

ModernMuseum
11-28-2010, 05:51 PM
I have them on my bugeye WRX. I'm not sure there's really a comparison that I can put into words. To put it in perspective, the factory horns sound like Tweetie Bird is politely requesting you to check your road behavior and the Hella Supertones sound like a hoard of demons escaping from the bowels of Hell.

I highly recommend them :)

ModernMuseum

A few more minor updates...

Getting the horn to work with the tilt column and NRG slim quick release hubs / quick release adapter. This adapter isn't the same as the thicker ones. When you mate the steering wheel to the hub, you have to turn the quick release, not the steering wheel. I used a spring to carry the current from the positive to the horn. A preliminary continuity test yielded that it should work when everything is powered up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/12/5285700782_0cab21986b_o-1.jpg

I had to widen that hole that the spring goes through, so the stock electrical connectors wouldn't work. After reading the instructions, they stated that the NRG quick release would not work with the NRG slim hub adapter. Well, they won't in stock form, but with a little cutting and utilizing the spring, they will work. I'm sure there's a better looking connection than using the spring (which I may explore later), but this will work for now.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/12/5285700900_d2ac722bd7_o-1.jpg

I guess I'll try and do a rough alignment, drive it around some, and then take it in to get the official alignment done. ModernMuseum – That’s a really awesome looking Bird! Do you have SBC or BBC springs? Either way, the springs will settle a little after you drive a little bit. A 2-inch drop from stock looks close to what you have there. Dropping the fender over the tire might require a little more tweaking.

Are you installing a steel or glass hood? Your battery already in the trunk already taking weight off the nose…good job! Nice car!

Hotchkis - thanks for the response. I'm not really sure which ones I have. The car came with the springs already installed and the previous owner had plans to install a re-built 400 pontiac (original engine). So, he possibly put the 2" dropped BBC springs in?

Since I'm now running an LS motor, should I have 2" dropped SBC springs in, which would make the car sit lower?

I'll be installing a steel hood, which will add a little weight to the front end and possibly make it sit a little lower. How much driving time should I allow before the springs are fully set?

ModernMuseum – Some 2” drop SBC springs would be much better considering your LS engine… especially if it’s an aluminum block LS.

If you really want to drop the front, you’re probably better off going with the 3” drop small block springs. But it depends on where you want the car to sit. If you have Hotchkis lower control arms you can install our aluminum spacer rings if you want to raise it a ¼ or ½” for tuning your ride height.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

But before you make any changes to your suspension to gain desired ride height, you should at least wait until your car is complete so that you have all the weight over the front wheels.

A few more updates...I'd say the car is knocking on 90% complete now.

I got about 80 to 90% of the wiring completed this past weekend. The only primary things I have left to do with regards to wiring are:

Wire up the main keyed switch with its inputs/outputs. There are still some things I don't quite comprehend here so, this being the case, usually results in me doing at least two hours of research for every hour of work in the car so I don't fry something.

Wire up my dome lights and rear view mirror (which also has dome lights/map lights). I think the door jam switches ground the circuits and I haven't quite figured out how the GENTEX mirrors switch on and off. Apparently there are several different versions which are wired different ways, and a lot of them have different colored wires coming out. I think I'm going to wire this up near the end when I have the car powered up. I think it will be easier that way.

Wire up the last temp sensor for fan control (I have three temp sensors: fan control (switch), dakota digital (temp sender) and factor temp sensor). If I can't find an adapter to run the last temp sensor into the passenger side head, I'll have to run two sensors in the rubber radiator hoses.

Wire up the reverse lock-out solenoid. I ordered a black pistol grip shifter from JEGS which has a switch at the top. I've learned, so I think, that the typical way people wire this up is by running it through the brake switch in series, which means that every time I pressed the brake, the solenoid would actuate. This doesn't really seem like a good way to wire it up from a longevity standpoint, so I'm opting with the shifter switch. Plus it's black, it's a pistol grip and looks pretty rad. Extra douche points when people think it's a nitrous switch.

I also got the tank re-installed and wired in this weekend, which was a small feat to bench press it while bolting it into place. I had to take it out to get a local shop to fab the little bracket on the front of the tank, as shown. Hopefully the fuel return setup I have below works. Instead of running a return, one of my racing buddies stated that almost all dirt track racers send the pressure regulator return back to the pump inlet as such. I seriously hope this works - the guy who made the recommendation is very knowledgeable, so I trust that it will.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/6139749075_4e9e98b999_z-1.jpg

So, the only main things left to do in order to get the car on the street are:

Finish electrical stuff
Fill with fluids
Grease joints
Bleed clutch
Take to an upholstery shop to get the back seat done
Get front end aligned
Fab up a console, which will hide the window switch/door lock wiring.
Paint/install intake (i decided against powder coating to save some cash)
Paint/install windshield wipers
Re-install hood
Power up and test electrical

Car is about 95% done. Just needs to be tuned and have the rear seat narrowed since the car is mini-tubbed.

Just got the engine put back together (long story). Pulled her out of the garage today and washed her for the first time since she's been painted (several years ago). After thanksgiving I'll to her to get tuned. The clutch is royally screwed up for some reason...no idea what is wrong with it. It takes the force of Hercules to press it in and it's not engaging the clutch all the way...only about halfway. Whatever...guess I'll have to pay someone else to fix it because there's no way in hell I'm taking the trans back out. I'm through working on this thing for a while. I'm almost more pissed than I am satisfied with this whole thing.

The nose on 69's doesn't really look that bad when you black everything out...

I finally settled in Houston, so maybe we should get together.

Definitely. I should have the car running by mid-December and we can arrange to meet up; looking forward to it. Btw, Sam Hatco ( I believe he is on this board) is the head of a firebird club here in Houston. They arrange annual trips for firebird owners. Something to think about...

Hehe, yeah, photography is one of my other hobbies. Once your car is done we can arrange a shoot somewhere in town - I have a network of car/photography people here in Houston who get together and do shoots sometimes for fun.

Yeah, I actually joined the group and been to a couple of their outings. Nice bunch of guys. My bird is somewhat done. Need to sort out some drivability issues, and get the AC working (wasn't a priority when I was in WA. lol)

Just got the car back from the tuner. $2k later :nopity:

They had to change out the push rods before they could tune it and patch a hole in the brand new Stainless Works headers. It's just money though, right?

Put down about 450hp at the wheel. Still debating on going with some 3" drop springs in the front. I may just go ahead and get it aligned and then drive it around a while to see if they drop some more. I will probably do the A-arm and coil-over thing as well as a 4-link next year anyway, so maybe I'll just save the coin for now.

Here is how it sits in my drive. The front is still slightly higher than the rear.

Heck if your saving just look at Ridetechs coil overs and tru-turn system,,,fixes lots of issues AND you can tune ride height to a degree.
And tru-turn lets bigger wheels up front.
As for looks with so much black its not noticeable to me but then I have an H body and newer (84) B body Chevys.

Interesting. I wasn't aware of that. I'd like to eventually run some wider tires up front. I have 245's now but wouldn't mind getting some 275's in there....not sure if I would have much of a turning radius though

I'll have to check that out...

The car probably won't be road-worthy by then (it's still not aligned, inspected, etc.) but I will definitely be cruising with you guys in the near future. What club do you belong to? I met a guy at Cars and Coffee a few weeks ago and he advised that there were actually two first gen Firebird clubs in Houston.

I belong to the HALF group. They're meeting at Cars & Coffee at Louetta/249, then cruise to Magnolia for lunch.

Awesome build and pics! Could you post a photo from the rear of the car looking down over the rear spoiler to show how it aligns to the side of the car? I order my spoiler in and the fitment is terrible and seems too narrow.

Thanks,

Here's a pro-tip for everyone. Don't leave crap lying around that could fall on your car. I had a tall piece of IKEA furniture in a box that I hadn't yet assembled leaning up against the small room for my air compressor. I was getting a chair out of the room for my wife to sit on and it dislodged an 8 foot tall piece of particle board that went sailing down and put a nice half dollar size dent in the worst possible place: the rear fender. (Luckily?) my wife was around; otherwise I probably would have picked up the nearest wrench and hurled it into the drywall.

I'm wondering if I can get away with painting this section of the car without having to paint the entire back half. It may not have even gotten into the base coat but I can't really tell. What are my options here without borrowing the GDP of Fiji to get this fixed?

Hard to see in the pic but I would try paintless dent repair first. It might not be perfect but will minimize the body work. A good paint guy should be able to blend the repair without repainting the whole panel if the paintless doesn't work.

Thanks. I might try that, although there do appear to be some deep scratches in the clear. Not sure I'm ready to drop a few grand to paint some of the panels, so perhaps I can get by with this in the near term.

If I do end up having it painted at some point, will they be able to match the paint fairly easily (it's black..?) or will I have to try and find the paint code? I bought the shell already painted so that might be difficult.

youll be surprised what the paintless dent removers can get out man.. you should try.. just make sure its a reputable one as the russian guy in the dodge intrepid is not going to touch something that nice.

I feel for you- my dads barns are full of... well everything and I think every dent his cars have had in the past 10 years are from falling rakes, ladders, pool equipment, etc.

I put a nice ding in the side of my 69 Charger when I didn't fasten down both sides of a metal pipe I was cutting. Lucky it was on the decal and not too visible.

Like others have said- try pdr, some of those guys are amazing.

I put a nice ding in the body of mine too. I know a guy in the PDR business and I am waiting till he has some slack time to come over and work on it. He said it will be a little more difficult because of the heavier gauge metal in the older body panels but he thinks he can get it out.

The car looks great man! We have a guy here that does PDR as well and I've been amazed by some of the dents I've seen him remove. I'd say that someone that's talented in that area could get that out with no issue.

Awesome guys. I'll try that. Are PDR people of the traveling type (and will visit your house) or do you typically have to drop your car off?

If the dent can come out I can probably live with the scratches for a while.

Damn, I can't believe my last post was 5 years ago! Lots has happened since then: I had to leave the state for a 2-year construction project, popped out a couple of kids (well, my wife did, but hey, men can have babies now too I guess? :lmao: ), switched companies, and I'm finally getting settled back down. Luckily I haven't had to move and I'm still in the same tiny house with a huge garage. It's really been almost 10 since I've put any real miles on her; I've finally got a few months window to try and get her back on the road, but there are a few hiccups.

Looks like my Hydratech Hydroboost system is leaking a good bit in several places, probably originating from the clown who first installed it. Hopefully someone here has a similar experience. I would post in the drivetrain forum but it looks like the Hydratech folks don't post much here anymore.

1) This fitting on the hydraulic power booster is leaking power steering fluid between the fitting and the booster. Is this really an o-ring seal? It's been 10 years since I put this in, so I'm not even sure if this is the correct one. It has a flare also, so it's gotta be one or the other - I assume the flare is the sealing mechanism due to the high pressure.

2) This one is...not good. It LOOKS like it's leaking brake fluid (this is the connection that connects to the aluminum clutch reservoir) here at this hose clamp, so I assume it's at atmospheric pressure here. I remember putting more torque than I wanted to on this plastic fitting, but it's still leaking. Should I ATV silicone it? This just doesn't seem like a great design, but perhaps I just need to put the mega torque on it? Also, I seem to get moisture inside the clutch reservoir too, which causes this battery acid looking grunge when it reacts with the brake fluid.

Was just about to get her back on the road until the inspectorman failed me on low rear tire tread. Guess I'll just have to burn the rest off before I go back in for inspection.

They also couldn't align it (posted in another thread here) because they need to move my driver a-arm in a little and it's going to hit my power steering pulley. I'm having some problems with hydroboost power steering whine, so I may have to bite the bullet and buy a different PS pump.
