After the GG event in Costa Mesa that many of you attended, there were quite a few of you that were interested in making the drive out to Pleasanton for the next GG show here in Cali. The dates for the show are June 5th and 6th. We will be leaving on Friday June 4th. Here's the plan; I will have folks meet up at my place that Friday morning--around 9:00 (those of you coming from San Diego and OC--I'm in Lake Forest) and get on the road around 9:15. We will then take the 405 to the 101 and will be making a stop in Oxnard to see Cris's shop at JCG restorations (Cris will be confirming). This will be a great place to pick up you guys from the valley area that will be going (Come on Carl, Chad, Mike, Larry) We will grab lunch after checking out all of JCG's radical stuff, and then get back on the road-- hopefully by or before 1:00. We will get back onto the 101 and make our way to Pleasanton. If you are from central Cali and want to join up, please do so--we'll figure out how to manage that based upon input. I believe GG has host recomendations on their site---I will be checking out where to stay and posting that up as well. So far we have approx 5 folks committed to going and entering the Auto X. The drive time is estimated at approximately 7 hours driving steadily from my place in South OC. I would say with gas stops and such this is probably a good estimate. This is something I have always wanted to do and I will go on my own, but wanted to invite the community to participate as well. This should be a very fun drive. I am planning on hanging out through Sunday, then driving back on Monday the 7th. What say you?

Hotel information. Looks like the least expensive is the Courtyard---

Sorry, you will have to copy and paste the above--can't figure out how to make it a link.

Pre registration (online and over phone) ends after the 21st of this month (May).

I will be booking rooms tomorrow--I plan on staying at the Hilton unless others have stayed in Pleasanton before and can make another reccomendation---

The Hilton is nice, I have stayed there a few times. I will be traveling up friday night and staying in Tracy. But I will have my trailer in tow with my Truck to hang out for the weekend.

If you guys come home through the valley on Monday your welcome to come by my shop. It is a great half way point to stop for lunch on the journey home.

I'm in, and talked my dad into going as well. We can't wait to make the drive! Stopping by Ironworks on the way back would be a nice stop too. I've been wanting to drop by the shop for the last couple years now, but it always seemed too out of the way for me to justify.

Larry, I think I may end up driving back on Sunday as well---I will know for sure this next week--Cassie may not be able to stay home with kids that day (Monday) which means I'm on the road on Sunday.

BTW, they are running the Auto X the same as the Costa Mesa event---all day Sat with a break for lunch, the Sunday 9 to 1.

Would be willing to do one of the events later this year though. I should hopefully have an OD tranny by then too...

The show is pretty much over at that point on Sunday short of the awards ceremony. If you guys want to do a late night stop buy Sunday evening I can arrange that. I could order pizza for a dinner stop on your way home. It is just short or 4hours from Pleasanton to my shop at 65mph with my big trailer.

Are we really back in Junior High with your humor or is this the maturity level in the "Pitcher Drawer" and leader of the Cargo short crew. Seriously......:machine:

FYI, There is a town just outside of the Bay area that our Good Buddy Ed Capen lives in called "Tracy", that my wife and I will be staying at. Just to be clear.

Guys, if it works for most of you to get back on the road Sunday after the Auto Cross is done---maybe 1:00---and head back, then I will plan on doing the same. I'm all for stopping by Roger's on the way back on Sunday for pizza and a tour. So we would be taking the 5 fwy back instead of the 101--which is a more direct route anyways.

Roger, we will start getting a # together here in the next week or so to keep you informed of what day to expect us.

Right on Cris--that is really generous of you!! We will look forward to BBQ at your shop on the 4th around 11:00 or so --then make tracks for Pleasanton. I registered for the event tonight and booked a room at the Hilton---the Good Guys rate was 79.00--I booked through Sat night--looks like most of the folks are leaving on Sunday after 1:00 or so. Thanks again brother--very cool of you.

You guys coming from the valley area can meet up with us at Cris's shop around 11:00 on Friday the 4th in Oxnard (JCG Restorations)---I hope someone brings a camera for all of this.

Hello everyone....

I stay in the Dublin / Pleasanton area 3 nights every week for work. The best and most reasonable hotels are a little further away in Livermore.

There is a Hampton Inn and a Hilton Garden Inn along with several others off the Airway exit on 580 in Livermore. Rates are much better than the hotels in Pleasanton.

I will be there Saturday and Sunday, we should have a gathering here at the show.

They are 300's but they feel sticky and look to be a hair wider than the R888's. The R888's had some flat spots after the RTTC and I didn't trust them for our road trip. The screw ended up not puncturing into air but still made me nervous. If I'm going to run these events, I may as well give myself a shot at racing into the optima challenge anyway.

I think you and your car are definitely fit for Optima. You just need to find an event that Mary isn't competing in so you can win an invite...

Ok I'm crossing my fingers.

Today saw the continuation of what is now becoming a "saga" to obtain air conditioning lol.

Had the lines finished and system charged about a month ago. After this I figured out oops... I need a difference pressure switch from vintage air because I'm using an electric fan.

Got the new switch wired up this morning and dropped by the AC shop to have the system evac'd to install the switch in the line and recharged.

We are standing there as the AC guy is telling me everything looks good and it's blowing 50* in my car. At this point I'm getting pretty excited. The worse part about my car on road trips in the past is that at freeway speeds having the windows down for hours on end gives me a headache big time.

So here we are talking when his finely tuned a/c ear says hey your fan should of kicked on. Low and behold the relay couldn't handle the rapid cycling of the fan now that I'm sporting A/C.

So after a drive all over the place search for a new 70 amp relay I'm back in business. Car has been idling in the garage the past half hour with the relay holding strong so far and my interior nice and cold.

Here is hoping i can make a few of you jealous tomorrow and not bring on additional gremlins on myself.

A little more detail on this?

Chad-1stGen
06-03-2010, 06:36 PM
Hey Mike,

The standard vintage air kit comes with a "binary" pressure switch. The binary switch is wired inline with the compressor power supply and will only allow the compressor to cycle if the system pressure is between 30 psi and ~400psi.

Allowing a system to hit 400 psi will eat compressors in no time.

The vintage air "trinary" switch has the same function as the binary plus a circuit to activate the fan whenever the system pressure exceeds ~250 psi.

The vintage air catalog with the pressure switches is here:
http://www.vintageair.com/catalog09/09%20VintageAir%20Catalog%2066.pdf

The instructions assume your fan is ground switch activated (mine is by the commander 950) though I'm not sure if it matters.

EDIT: I used PN's 11076-VUS Replacement female thread trinary switch only & 18103-VUG Adapter and installed the switch at the drier rather that inline in the hose.

EDIT2: Airflow over the condenser is what reduces high pressure in the system. In the excerpt I posted above about my AC saga it was less than 60 seconds when the compressor cycled and made an off noise and when the technician had reattached the pressure gauge. In that time my system hit 400 psi. Idling in my garage the fan was cycling on/off a number of times in a minute. It was cycling on only for short bursts. The VA system is considered a "small capacity" system so I'm not sure if that impacts it or not.

Okay, I admit that I'm a complete HVAC dummy - what fan is being turned on, the radiator cooling fan, or the HVAC fan?

Chad-1stGen

Okay, I admit that I'm a complete HVAC dummy - what fan is being turned on, the radiator cooling fan, or the HVAC fan?

The radiator fan. It is critical for proper operation and longevity of the system to have adequate airflow over the condenser. So the system needs a way of turning on the fan in response to the needs of the AC system not just engine coolant temperature.

From my discussions with the AC guys (shop I took it too has a lot of experience in custom/hot rod ac systems) and research you pretty much HAVE to have a trinary switch if running an electric radiator fan.

PS. I'm not expert either, I've just obtained some useful knowledge (at least I hope) through that great experience of... trial and error.

EDIT: My 2nd edit on the previous post might of cleared up some of your confusion but it look like I edited after you read the post.

Later on we got to test our AC systems against 95* weather. Mine performed great. Yesss!!!!

As of today Doug is leading the socal group with the lowest time of 31.7 and Mary is leading overall with 29.2 I believe.

If I get motivated I'll add some more flavor and pics from the drive up. Left the camera at home today so no pics/video from today's happenings from me.

Ok here are a few of the pics I liked from yesterday. Most of them are before we got to JCG Restorations.

Also, I have to give some more credit to Chris at JCG. His shop was awesome! Spic and span clean. Maybe 15+ badass projects. Chris hooked us up with some delicious free food. The best part was taking us around the shop and pointing out lots of the little details he puts into a car to help set it apart. He struck me as a perfect example of the old adage of finding your passion and doing it for a living.

Thanks for the great tour Cris and the great food. Your shop, your fabrication, and your passion are first-class and I'll definitely be recommending your services.

I'll go ahead and also post some photos my wife took along the way and also at JCG. Some are very similar to Chad's, but we gotta get his car in there too. I also have some videos of us cruising that I'll figure out how to post shortly. I'm bummed I could not continue for the full trip, but my wife and I had just gotten back from Hawaii the day before and we were just burnt out on traveling and wanted some downtime to recover and regroup. Boring weekend here, I wish I could have tagged along with all those camaros, heck, the charger is just an overgrown camaro, right?
Looks like fun was had by all, too bad you did not have any Tennessee spring water.....

Cool shots Chris! Thanks for sharing.

Just got back to my Grandma's house from the GG show. 31 second time eluded me all weekend. I think I ran a total of 13 times and 8+ of those had to be between 32.0 and 32.2 seconds lol.

I wish I could have that kind of consistency in my wakeboarding.

Bill, we would of loved to have you. Your "Tennessee spring water" was discussed thoroughly during dinner Friday night.

Chad I'm in the same boat I was stuck 32-33-32-33 AURRRGG then i loaned my car to Keith Smith (2nd Gen Guru) and kart racer Guy from Custom Works and damn if he didn't throw a 31.01 first time driving my car! I even loaded the announcer, Keith Smith His Client Mike and myself for a run and damn if it wasn't another 32 second run with 4 adults ?

It was good to see all the Pro tour cars represented for the last 2 days and we even managed to hook a second gen Guy He got a few tips from Mary's ride along and ended up talking about dropping the car at Custom Works by the end of the weekend (welcome aboard Albert)

and the only thing consistent about my wake boarding is the crashes

I had a blast and it was good meeting a few of you guys. The Formula did its job...putting up with the daily beatings. My best was a 31.3. Thank God I put the Tru-Trac in last week. Really need some front suspension and to get rid of the air-shocks out back. The front tires are rolling over in the corners. Need some caster bad. Drive home was uneventful. Mike

Thanks to all of you so-cal guys for making the trec up to our neck of the woods! It was fun hanging with you all, and even though the course was much smaller than the last couple, I think we all had a real butt load of fun this weekend. I know I did!!!

So we left Paso Robles at about 6:00 to go get some groceries, got side tracked and ended up in 3 hours away in pleasanton...... lucky for us there was a car show going. Had a few runs around the course, groceries stayed put (for the most part). i got lonely in the big old wagon and decided i needed some company. Mary, Deanna, and three of their closest friends were kind enough to humor me and go for a ride-along. Go figure it was my fastest time at 30.9 had i know the secret to autocross is extra (screaming) weight i would have come prepared.

Thanks to all my extra screaming weight, you guys know how to have fun. (mary please keep your legs in the car next time!)

Now if I can just get better and live up to it...Mary Pozzi, look out cuz I'm a knockin' (Yea, like that's ever gonna happen. Sometime I just crack myself up!). Must got too much sun...

That what it had to be! The whole trip home i was asking my dad "how did weight help???" We came up with nothing! It had to be ALL the experience that was in the car! Or maybe it was the fact that every corner i got my ears blasted off by the back seats screams. I had no idea how much the tires were squealing until i saw the video.

Wow! What a great event, and it was so impressive that so many cars drove up from SoCal 6-8 hours to run in this event. Everyone got a load of runs, and it was great to see the brother's from SoCal from Matt's with his incredibly well done first gen, to Doug's with the Ultimate stance on 20's, to Chad's tight ride, and of course the Incredible Stig.

Deanna's progress the last year has been astounding she's really getting that Chevelle around the course. Mary's influence is really starting to show. For Mary what can one say...I don't anyone else winning one of these thing ever!

Then there's Kyle really shakin' it in the Mamoth Car around the narrow tiny course with a stock LT1 with single exhaust and the Newman Car Creations C4 Vette suspended chassis. Wow does that chassis work, so when are you guy's going to come up with a C4 IRS for a 1st gen?

Stiggy, Curtis, JCG??wow, we missed you guys too ? Man, I guess we were out of the loop big time.

maybe next time

Kyle...maybe the extra weight put the suspension into a different RC level and changed the way it works against the tires....RCH, RC and AS% would change drasticly with very little travel due to short rear spindle arms. Something to ponder.

Great weekend! I couldn't have asked for a better trip, except for maybe the drive back. We got started kinda late because Doug just had to go and get a Goodguys award as Pleasonton finalist for Muscle Machine of the Year. Congrats Doug! that award is a big deal and you really deserve it, especially after driving the wheels off your car the entire weekend. between the company and the drive everything was a blast. Visiting JCG was a welcomed stop along the way up. Cris couldn't have been a better host, feeding us some great bbq and showing us all of the little trick details on the cars in his shop. Cris has some amazing builds in house.

Somehow I ended up with driving duties for the entire weekend, which meant my dad, Steve was snapping photos.

Here we are stopped at a gas station, the first of many stops, lol. Somehow I managed to knock down around 25 mpgs, which wasn't too bad. You gotta love the LSx/t56 combo, I could have driven 6 hours without stopping.

Chad was the odd man out this weekend driving the only '68. Every time we stopped we got to hear about his A/C, and how he could listen to music and carry on a conversation. Not gonna lie, I'm a bit jealous after giving up on listening to anything other than wind/engine noise.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/06/DSC_0552-1.jpg

Here is Chris R's homebuilt wonder. Some cars just look better in person, and this is one of them. Because it's understated, Pictures just don't capture how well put together it is.

Mary driving off after one of her slower runs, (which was still faster than everyone except Mike Maier). Making it look easy out there was no easy task, the parking lot was hellishly slick and if you got off line it was a nightmare. A couple times my front wheels failed to turn altogether, causing me to collect half the tracks cones with my front spoiler, which was still more fun than embarrassing.

My dad never gets on here, but he would like to thank everyone we met over the weekend for helping to put this trip together. On the drive back he couldn't stop talking about how nice everyone was, and how much he enjoyed the entire weekend. The same goes for me. Everyone was beyond helpful, from Mike who was parked next to us that lent us tools since we'd forgotten ours, to Mary who rode shotgun and constantly yelled out tips , and Mike Maier for taking time to explain how we should set up our suspension. What a fun weekend!

Thanks to Rob for these pics--I was able to run a 31.33---the car had a 30 pass in it, driver couldn't pull it off.

Doug- It was my pleasure!

Funny how the pics cannot capture the stretched fenders like when you see them in person!

Thanks again for allowing me to ride shoot gun with you on Saturday @ the autocross & congrats on the award. Luv the stance on the 69!

Cris

Thanks again Cris for hosting us---was a great time for sure and was great hanging out at your place! It's the first time i've ever actually wanted a fat bottom.

Last post--I believe---wanted to say thank you to Matt and his pops Steve for sticking around with me until the awards thing was over. Since the award was for the Muscle Machine of the Year finalist, it was reccomended that I stick around for it, so I did. The others needed to go which was the right thing to do. Matt and Steve stuck around until 3:30, then drove the 9 hours with me to my exit and then went on another hour to get themselves home--not to mention having to stop every 130 miles or so for me to fill up. Stand up guys--they certainly didn't have to do that---but thank you to both of them for doing so---you guys are much appreciated--thanks again to both of you.

Also, Roger at Ironworks was going to host us for dinner, since we got such a late start, we elected to drive straight through and not stop. Was very bummed we didn't get to do it this time---I hope you will offer again as I would love to see the shop. Was great to hang out with you at the show and have decided to be one of your first investors in the "Panel Gap Spray" idea---LOL. Good seeing you man and thanks again for your generous offer.

And to Stig, thanks for giving John a ride home after he sold his 69 convertable at the show--that was way above and beyond man--was great spending time with you this weekend--thanks again for the ride bro---I still can't get over it--much funner than being in mine.

Thanks Bro--was great to meet you---unbeliveable car you have--you have to bring it to the RTTH West Coast event when Bill and the boys put the next one together----we would have a blast. Post pics up of the Dart you've got going for your wife---would love to see those.

No---I think that's only if you win the Auto Cross---so Mary will get to go for the next 6 years in a row so far--LOL.

If I did get invited, I'd be divorced---I would need to seriously upgrade lots of things (read $$$$$). I'd still go, make no mistake--it sure would be fun wouldn't it?

I don't think a Good Guys autocross win counts for an OUSCI invite anymore ...

Really? That bites. I hope you are still going with the car regardless. Great seeing you out at Pleasanton--and thanks for giving Stig the restaurant tip (Jardines)--was a great place to have dinner. All of us really enjoyed it.
