"Imitation is the greatest form of flattery," so the saying goes. In the car world, both automakers and independent aftermarket shops often look to the past to influence the future. And many people have taken their favorite classic cars, and modernized them in a way that pays tribute to both the past and present. But in this particular case, the influence of older Camaros may have gotten a little out of hand.

Take for example this Innovation RetroKits (http://www.innovationretrokits.com/camaro.html) front-end body kit, which transforms a 2010 Camaro into a 1969 Camaro…sorta.

Pictures: Innovation Retrokits

Innovation RetroKits is one of those companies that makes parts to convert modern cars into looking like their classic cousins. Mostly, their focus has been on converting trucks and full-size cars into clones. Recently though, they got into the muscle car game, and their first victim was the 2010 Camaro. While the 2010 Camaro certainly pays homage to the original Camaro, it isn’t nearly as retro as say, the Challenger. At least until you add their RetroKit front end to it.

The RetroKit draws its styling from the 1969 RS Camaro with hideaway headlights. The ground effects kit makes the car look lower, while actual lowering springs drop the car 1 inch. 20” Rocket Booster wheels fill the wheel wells, and RetroKits will even throw on some performance mods, like full-length headers and low-restriction catalytic converters. Retrokits will build and instill this kis for about $50,000, including the cost of the Camaro SS! While we may not love the looks, we can’t complain about the price (keeping in mind a fully-loaded SS costs nearly $40,000). Plus, it would be one unique showpiece!

Sorry guys I'm likin it. I dont feel The camaro got as close as ford and dodge when they tried to mimmick early era.
Although, bumper should have been same color as car.

I dont think it looks that bad.

Looks OK to me, at least they didn't add sidepipes and other useless "retro" crap.

As for their other kits...

I wonder who makes an RX-3 retro-kit for my Protegé.

I kinda dig the front end kit its all that ground effects that has to go, or make them fit the body lines instead of looking like wings, bolted to the sides of the car

That looks horrible. They should have mad a rs style grill and adapted the bumper into the existing front end. This looks like an elephant sat on the front end.

Son of a gun!!

I like it!!:smoke:

That front end is exactly what GM, in all thier shortsightedness, should have done. You're gonna add rear side gill and call it a retro? The front end (and maybe some work on those rear tail lights, would have had me in a 2010 Camaro seat right now!

I agree with making the side side skirts match the body though and I'm not really keen on the wheels (pretty sick of 5 spoke this and that), and if they could make them fit, a set of functional side pipes a la the C3 vette pipes, would look awesome!

As it sits though, I can't justify the cost though:( (we're seeing Camaro's in the 30's here and less, and they're all over the lots).

But I do like it:1st:

GM didn't build with that front end for the same reason they didn't give it a carburetor. Gov't regs.

I think the front looks too much like an old Camaro and it's a bit incongruous with the rest of the car behind it.

Nope, not working for me.

I think it was probably some angry '69 Camaro owner not happy with the new one, because it "Looks nothing like a '69"

When in fact, a "Retro" doesn't mean a carbon copy...It's a new take on a classic look.

Have you guys seen the concept sketches? The designers wanted the car that way, it's really close to the concept, besides extended bumpers, and a raised windshield line (Regs.)

Now the controversial part...which retro's better? They're all nice, I think each company did well on bringing them back.

...but yea, this "Kit" isn't that nice, after all...the 2010 is a '69 look-a-like already. If you want something spot on...buy a '69.

The fact that the edge of the front fender is leaning back from the bumper to the hood gives the car an odd profile since the grill and headlights are set back and horizontal. I think that contributes to the "love it" - "hate it" opinions. It has that "something doesn't look right" appearence to it.

While I like cars where they transfer the entire body from a classic onto a more modern chassis, this particular front end swap does not look great - too me.

I'll never get the "it's not retro enough!" sentiment. Do people really want gm to pigeonhole themselves into a 69 camaro clone with bigger bumpers and different trim? To me, that'd be the automotive equivalent of this "new" lynyrd skynrd. Let the classics rest, and instead build upon their history with truly new, original designs that honor the heritage, I say.

Needs an Endura bumper frenched into the frontend and a little height on the nose. That chrome bumper looks awful.

To me this idea looks better than the stock 2010 front end from Chevrolet.

Sadly this is the first conversion that hasn't made me wanna throw up all over... Paint the bumper!!!!!! and its tollerable..:bsjerk:..Sorta

Loose the bumper and I think it looks good. I can't stand the current production front end since it looks like a dark hole. All we have on the cars lots are the "Bumble Bee Transformer Editions" with those side skirts. How many yellow Camaro's are they building anyway! Wheels - nice choice.

however the lingenfelter kit is awesome

I personally like it, looks alot better than the grille in a new camaro now. its does need a little tweak but with a little message it could look better, more of a v'd look

I think the paint colors and scheme is what is throwing people off mostly. With a slightly different scheme it would probably get a better reception.

I like the '69 RS grille .
It looks good on that car.
Of , course , you never know how it really looks 'till you see one in person.

I also say this , " Jealousy is the greatest form of flattery " .

Agree they should have done it more like this, and so should have GM to begin with. They had the same Gov regs as Ford and Dodge so no excuses. They could have released it as a retro like it was suppose to be and then transformed it into the modern looking POS latter on just like ford has done with the Stang. We all would have been happy with it. I don't care what you guys say GM missed out on alot more sales not making it more retro. We all want a Bad Penny for ourselfs but can't afford one.

I Like It!! Kinda has the appearance of those flattened front ends on the Old School funny Cars of the era.

I also like the Retrofit kits for the the 2010 Mustangs, Built by WWW.Retrobuilt.com (http://www.Retrobuilt.com)

This kit get the appearance of of 69 Mach 1.

And this kit makes them look like a 69 Shelby GT 500
