Okay, some of you may know that I am big into Monte Carlo and I really like the 70-72 years. Having said that, I heard about two 70 Montes kinda out in the backwoods of the country so I went with a couple buddies to check on them. One was a pretty clean green/green car sitting in a backyard and while it was complete, was nothing special-and nobody answered the door so we moved on. So we heard about another one that was sitting back away from a house with no motor. Well, we pulled into the driveway and I spotted the bucket seats headrests right away so it was at least worth getting closer. One of my friends was trying to get an answer at the door but again, nobody was home and the house looked as if whoever owns it isn't there much judging by the amount of mail left. This car according to a friend who lives nearby said this car has been sitting outside for about a year and a half. As I sit in the backseat of my friends car, I noticed at an angle I could see a little badge at the lower front fenders. I literally about broke my wrist getting out of the back of the car to go look closer-yep, an original, motor gone but otherwise all there and pretty nice 1970 Monte SS! I looked it over pretty close-TH400, buckets/console, tilt, pwr windows, fiber optics, rear de-fogger, 12 bolt w/sway bar, factory lower boxed trailing arms, early halo roof trim, tach/gauge cluster, map lights and AM/FM/8-track. I have always hoped to find a real SS Monte to build and now that I found it...I just need to locate the owner somehow. How cool is that to find? I just had to share the story-I hope like heck I can pick this car up asap!

Good luck with the Monte. I have been driving down more country roads here lately trying to come up with a project car. The only ones I am finding are basketcases. I am hoping more will pop up on Craigslist as it warms up. So far, I have been a day late on what would have been a great car.

A friend of mine just found a silver 1970 SS454 Monte Carlo on Craigslist for 5000. It is an early halo top car too, the part that sux is that the original 454 is gone and a later 454 is in its place. I saw the pictures and think the price is high for condition without the numbers matching engine.
At the Long Beach swapmeet yesterday there was some OK deals in my opinion, like a 1970 Malibu unmolested car for 8700.

The only thing I had was my phone and it takes crappy photos. What's wierd is that the house almost looks vacant-as if whoever owns it hasn't rented it in awhile. Why this car has just been sitting for over a year is anyone's guess. I'd hate to see it disappear only to end up at an impound auction or worse a junkyard. The sad thing is the car is prolly worth more stripped down which is why I'd rather save it...too many nice Montes have been cut up to build Chevelles-pisses me off.

Can you do a DMV title search in your state to locate the owner?

nope-privacy laws prevent that. All I can do is keep an eye on it. I thought about checking with a neighbor down the highway and see if they know who lives or lived there. I feel sorta like American Pickers out here looking for old cars and their owners...lol

H20,
You can check the tax office records to find out who owns the property. It will have their last know info. I find alot of cars that way and then use the online tax info to find the owners. Good Luck.

Cool. I have always been a Monte fan as well. Would love to have a 70's era SS as well. Good luck, let us know how it goes, & pics if you can.
