I have an '89 TPI/700R4 out of a Vette in an '86 442. I replaced the pressure switch and lock up solenoid this spring, but the converter wont lock up The fluid looked fine and still smelled fine. And there was minimal deposits in the pan with probably 1500-2000 miles on it.
Last year I was fiddling with the TV cable to get it to shift a little firmer, but I didn't beat on it while doing it. I adjusted it at different times last summer, but don't remember when I noticed the tranny not locking.
I double checked the wiring and tried to lock it up manually at low speeds to see if I could feel it. The engine/ tranny were said to have about 70K from a car with an interior fire.
Ideas?

What sort of wiring is on the 700?

i have a 4L60E and it has to have a normally closed switch on the brake pedal to lock up. When the break pedal is pushed you can feel the converter unlock in high gear.

This 700 has 3 wires;
Violet; 12vp when key is on and brake not depressed
Tan/Blk; neg signal wire from computer to lock tc. With the key on this wire goes to 12vp, I assume because the voltage is going through the solenoid in search of ground?
Lt Blue; 4th gear select to computer, this wire is NO and goes to ground when trans goes into 3rd, tested it yesterday.
I should be able to ground the tan/blk wire at any time and lock the tc, but it doesn't. Does line pressure affect this? I think I have the TV cable out (or in?) to reduce line pressure so I wouldn't burn the clutches.

drop the pan and remove the tcc solenoid. find a 3/16" check ball put in snout. replace solenoid and pan and go drive. you should have lock up now. if so solenoid is probably bad. if not you have other issues with the trans.
there are several companies that sell pressure switches that will bypass the computer controll on that unit.

Would a ball bearing be good for this? Will the TC be locked all the time like this? My local mechanic thinks the converter is bad, he said they were weak to begin with in the 700r4.
Is the converter specific to the 700 or will others fit? I have one from a 200r4 and I think from a 4L60.(3800V6?)
I am leaning toward replacing this trans anyway, but not until later this summer
