427 big block

i got a 427 big block given to me is it worth putting money in to or should i just wait and get a lt motor.I have a 69 camaro and want a protouring car or wanttobe car.

Do you just have a bare 427 block ???
The 427 is a good engine , but an LS is even better..
It will cost you a good bit to build the bare 427 block into a running engine.
A good LS engine will probably cost about the same as a big block.
I'd go LS.
Sell the big block to someone who's doing a resto job..

What are you looking to do, for driveability and power I would go with an ls style platform. But for nostalgia's sake and as a restoration not much sounds better than having a "427"...

I started out with a 427 BBC. I had issues with a cracked block so I transfered everything over into a 454 block. After buying the aluminum heads, pistons, etc. it would have been cheaper to get a crate LS engine. I would have saved weight and made more horsepower.

I have the 427 crank, 10:1 pistons, GM Performance 110 cc oval port heads, Accel DFI SuperRam fuel injection, Comp solid roller cam and roller valve train and I port matched the heads to the intake and exhaust to headers. I ended up with about 520 hp at the crank.

With the same amount of cash I could have purchased an LS crate engine from Mast Motorsports and had more horsepower with less weight. I do have to admit that I really like the looks of a big block though.

I love my 402, wish I could affrod to build another engine a nd swap it all into a 454 block. 427 is good power and still able to spin some rpms!
figure $10k to install an LS from the start, maybe less if you can score older carbed intake someone swapped out for FI.
Nothing wrong but you can make a big block push a ton of torque for cheap as you DO NOT NEED ALUMINUM HEADS. They do lighten up a BBC though.

Go Big Block. Having owned 2 vettes I know LS motors are lightweight and make great horsepower but Its getting to be a bit over done in my opinion.

OK, I have a 427 in my Chevelle and a 496 in my Camaro. The LS engines are awesome! The only thing is to get 427 out of an LS platform you are going to spend some serious money.

Let's break it down...

Machine work assuming you have good hardparts

Heads - $400
Block - $600
Crank - $150
Rods - $100

$750 Engine Master Kit w/ Forged Pistons
---------------
$2000K

The 427 will rev to the moon and pull harder than you will believe. 550hp is very easy to get out of it and you don't have to spend $1000 on headers alone.

Tough call I say. I'd think about what exactly you want from the engine. Let that dictate your build up. Obviously the budget will be a factor as well.

Personal preference for me though is I love the 427 BBC. It's not that I know what I am doing with a BBC. I actually don't. It's just that I am tired of 454 this and 502 that. The 427 was a great motor and it's simply not seen any more much like the 409. I like to be a little different with my builds which is why I am building an LT1 up. You'll get my attention quicker if you say you built a 427 for your car than if you told me it had a 502. Don't build your car or anything for that matter to impress me or anyone else though.

thanks guys i am not sure what do money is a big issue and the 427 is free so might try to build it , just want to drive the car. and it be driveable
