I'm looking into a GM crate LSX 454, it looks like an easy 600+ HP, but I'm a little concerned about the weight. According to a dealer, the shipping weight is 700 lbs!!! If you take away the crate, that is pretty close to 600 lbs. That is all iron big block territory, so I'm hoping they are wrong. I'm trying to stay under 500 lbs or lighter, so maybe an AL big block. The AL LS motors and AL headed iron SBC motors seem to hover around 450 lbs or so, but I want a big bore.

The LSX block is about 110# heavier than an aluminum LS block, 225# bare.

Damn, thats alot. Too bad Warhawks are out of my price range. A fully assembled LSX weighs close to an iron BBC? I wonder how much heavier than an iron SBC with AL heads. Still, it seems like a deal when you compare it to other crate motors.

Do you have one?

The LSX block is heavy but it is insanely strong and I think the trade off is well worth it. That extra weight might keep you from quickly loosing weight when you scatter the track with debris. The LS based blocks are heavier than gen I blocks for comparison a 6L iron block is 209# vs a gen I of 180ish
No I don't have one.

A steel big block is 260lbs bare. My ZL-1 block is only 110lbs. Why not just build an all aluminum LSX?

My other thought is an AL big block, although the recip assembly is heavier. BBC seem to make 600+ HP NA power pretty easy, I was just thinking of going LS for the cylinder heads and fuel injection.

How tight are the headers in your ZL1?

Do you mean AL LS or LSX? I'm calling the GM LSX block based motors (I think there's only 2, besides bare blocks) LSX. If I build an LS, I'd like to stick with an LS7 because of the bore size.

My other option, which may make the most sense, is a motown LS, but I've yet to see one in a car.

I'd love to have a lightweight AL motor, but they don't come cheap.

Why not go with an aluminum LS and have the Modular Integrated Deck (MID) conversion done. Ends up being stronger than the LS7 and capable of a bigger bore. The LS7's bore is pretty much maxed out from the factory, I have heard of several sleeve cracking problems with only a .005 overbore (4.130) the mid setup can go to 4.2.

It's not bad at all but I have a DSE frame so I'm not dealing with a steering box. Lemons builds a nice set. If you want to check out my engine build, I have it documented on Lateral-G.

A fully assembled LSX weighs close to an iron BBC?

From what I've read generally swaps drop ~300lbs from an Aluminum head BBC to an aluminum block LS motor. So if the LSX block costs you ~100lbs you're still 200lbs ahead.

What is your HP goal?

I'd look at a LS2/402 or LS3/415 stroker.

If the budget is not a constraint just do what was said above and sleeve an aluminum block motor.

I did not consider sleeving, thats another option I'll look into. I wish budget was not an issue, but it is, and its the biggest reason aluminum big blocks or boost is probably out of the question.

Of course, I could move back in with the parents...
