Had my motor refreshed 700 miles ago. ( rings, all bearings and lifters) Last week 2 issues started, Timing sounded like it was off and was "fluttering". It was off and I reset it again, ( 10 - 12 & 30-32) days later it is doing it again. In addition my oil pressure has dropped.
0- 5 at 1000rpm idle.
18 lbs at 2500
2500 at 4000.
Babied it to the local shop. Timing was hooped and would not stay at 10-12 & 30-32 after motor hit 4000 rpm. Pulled the dist and they found the mechanical advance mechanism had broke loose at the press on part of the top of the dist shaft, it had like 40 degrees play in it. Fixed the dist set the timing and tested it up to 5000 rpm a few times. No problem timing fixed. Oil pressure still an issue of course.
Drained the oil and pulled the filter and opened it up. Oh my god :jawdrop:

Sent these pics to my builder. He thinks that the mech advance failure may have had its effect on the timing and may have taken out the bearing on the mains. I am pulling the motor and he is going to examine the whole engine and determine ther amount of damage.....

Thoughts??

If the timing was retarding itself everytime you re-checked it then that probably wasn't causing your your bearing problem but if it was advancing itself a bunch that would have caused detonation which would have hammered the bearings (usually the rod bearings) did the flutter that you mentioned sound like detonation (pinging)? if so that is what probably caused the bearing failure. As the bearings start to fail you will lose oil pressure because bearing clearance is increasing. To answer the main question the failure probably was caused by distributor.
