I'm going to do a c5/c6 brake conversion on my 87 turbo-t. Does anybody know if there are any cheap alternatives for front hubs other than kore3, etc... will any early gm front drum brake hubs work? thanks

Check them out, I dont know how much the kore3 stuff is but these sound reasonable to me.

Take a set of stock ones to a machine shop & have the braking surfface cut off?

Thought about that, but then you would have to machine the wheel surface face to center the rotor in the caliper bracket, right?

I've heard there is a certain 3rd gen f-body rotor you can machine down, anybody know which one?

No. My wheels are not centered by the center hole in the wheel, they don't even touch the spindle/hub, the lugs center it.

The standard front disc brakes on the '82 - '92 (3rd gens) use the same rotor/hub assembly as the '84 - '87 Regal's. I actually used a set of factory '85 Regal discs to make the hubs for a brake upgrade on the '92 Camaro.

what all did you have to do? just machine off the rotor surface?

To wack the rotor off the hub I drilled a series of holes in the rotor close to the hub. Drill press.

A tap of a hammer and the rotor then fell free of the hub (watch the toes).

Pressed out the stock studs.

The remains went in the lathe and cleaned up/ turned off the remaining piece of rotor.

The OD was cleaned up a little, with the front face outer edge given a chamfer (is that spelled right?) to fit inside the new rotor.

Pressed in new studs.

NOTE: used these hubs with oil on new bearings and no seal to balance new rotors.

Assembled and am enjoying the better brakes and smoother running vehicle.

how did you balance the turned down "hub". I will be doing the same thing on my 87 silverado.
thanks

edit:
after changing the search phrase on yahoo... I got a result...

Wonder if it will work with a milled down version of that?

I'm awaiting a set of modded B-body spindles to bolt my Caddy CTS-V 14" rotors onto with matching dual piston Brembos calipers....have to have at least 18" wheels though...we'll see how they fit soon enough I hope. My Cutlass will have 14" brakes all around.

Why not just get a set of ZQ8 spindles of a 2wd s10 or blazer. I don't know exactly what years, but you just need to look for the 2wd ones with the slip on rotors. This will give you the ability to do the brake upgrade much easier. You won't have to do any machining because the spindles are a direct fit. I would think you can get a set of spindles, rotors, and calipers for around $200 used. This would be the s10 brakes, but I think your c5 stuff would bolt up to it. You will need a caliper bracket. Here is a link (http://www.montecarloss.com/community/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=732506&page=1)to some more specific info.

Hope this helps,
Joe

thats what I did. s10 spindles, kore3 hybrid brackets, c5 z06 calipers, 14" z06 rotors.

I just picked up a set of drum brake hubs, i am going to have those machined down, and replace the studs with ARP
