View Full Version : Question after running my car on a road course

Sorry if this is a dumb question, all new stuff to me. I recently took my car out to El Toro for the West RTTHs event and got to run my car on the road course. Had a blast, but on the last lap, I noticed my brake pedal was not as firm as it was in the start. Never felt it was unsafe, just not the same as usual.
Is this brake fade? Is this normal?
Brakes are Wilwood 4-piston on all corners, Wilwood 7/8"s MC. Manual brakes, not sure what brake fluid I am using.
Thanks for the help

If they went back to normal after they cooled down, then yes....
yes that's brake fade, that not as solid feel when applying the brakes, cooling ducts help cool them quicker by forcing constant air flow towards them,
sounds like your next project!

Also try using DOT 4 brake fluid as it will hold up at higher temps. Alot of times the break fluid is stressed beyond its boiling point and tends to break down. Also remember that an open bottle of brake fluid has a shelf life of up to 6 months, after that it has tended to absorb to much moisture from the air and needs to be thrown out.

Depending on the age of the fluid in your system...it might be a good time to flush it out and put in some fresh fluid......brake fluid absorbs moisture over time (hygroscopic)

What type of pads are you using?

The pads that came with the kit, not sure what type it is.

probably the massively crappy bp-10;s
I would get rid of them and replace them - I hear in another thread on here that they discontinued them due to problems.
Go up to a higher heat handling pad - those bp-10s are known to crap out at high temp.

I have to agree. They are supposed to be "Smart Pads" that sense what type of driving you're doing . Personally the only time I ever liked them was on the road course and I didn't push them that day. I switched to a different manufacturer in the front and have another set I need to install on the rear. I found the cold performance of the BP10 to be horrible. They don't make any noise but that's about the only good thing I can say.

So who makes other pads for the Dynalites besides Wilwood?

Carbotech and Hawk for starters. You will trade performance for some noise and rotor wear.

Any suggestions on a better pad? Mostly street driven, but want to start doing more racing events.

AS grnova says - bp-20 or bp-30 I have bp30s on my car but it is more race driven and does not see as many street miles. you will get more brake dust with these pads.

x2 for Hawk! brake power and low brake dust

The Hawk HP+ is a nice pad.

So guys how about a actual number for Hawk or other pads to swap in the Dynalites. Every search I have tried doesn't give a number.
I guess the BP20s could be a go, being as it is mainly a drag car they need a little cold operation.
What do you guys feel about differnt compinds on front and rear brakes? Car has GM single piston metrics on the rear, and was going to use some old organics I had laying around
