We need 15 cars to participate at the Classic Motorsports Mitty at Road Atlanta in a few weeks.
( April 29th to May 2nd , 2010 )
I know this is short notice , and I will move this thread to the "Racing Events" forum later .
We used to have great access to Road Atlanta when the Year One Experience was held there .
The Year One Experience is gone , but we have another chance to get to run our cars on Road Atlanta .
If we can get at least 15 cars to sign up , pay , and show up , they will give us our own Car Corral at the Mitty.
We will be a group of modernized classis musclecars in the midst of some of the worlds most famous roadrace cars and drivers.
These people and cars have "walked the walk and talked the talk".
There's no posers.
I'm hoping this will be our entry into this group of roadracers.
We could attend the Mitty every year and take spirited "touring laps " around Road Atlanta like we used to..
What I really want is for us to get our own time trails class.
So , we need to make a good showing and we will have a new venue for some pro-touring fun !!
And I'm hoping to make this an annual / yearly event.
Maybe even move the Peach State Musclecar Challenge to overlap the Mitty each year.
They've already got the venue set up with vendors, food , safety crews , timers , and celebrities for us.
And we don't have to do all the work to stage the event and rent the track.
( I looked into renting Road Atlanta for the PSMC this year , the price was astronomical !)
Here's a link with info on the Mitty.
http://classicmotorsports.net/events/mitty-2010/
Buy tickets at this link :
http://classicmotorsports.net/mitty-tickets/
Make sure to buy the touring laps session tickets as well as your daily tickets OR buy the VIP Package which includes all 3 days plus touring laps sessions.
I'm going for the VIP package , it's only $129 for all 3 days ..that's $43 a day ( cheap )
I'm hoping this will be our way of getting a pro-touring event on a big roadcourse in Georgia again.
Plus , the classic motorsports , and historic race people are looking for some new participants and fans at the events.
They want to bring in some youngsters to help the event last for years to come.
So , they want us and we need them. It sounds like a good match.

I really miss the Year One Experience. At the same time we've put on some great pro touring events of our own. Classic Motorsports magazine, the sister title to Grassroots Motorsports, is inviting us to mingle with the gods of speed.
If we get 15 cars, Classic Motorsports will provide a tent. Regardless of the car count, this is a chance to hang with fellow pro-touring enthusiasts, and check out some exciting HSR vintage racing? What does that mean? You can get up close and personal with a F5000 race car. It's the hot rod equivalent of a Formula 1 car. The car pictured below is powered by a small block Chevy.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I've sat in this car and it is indeed a hot rod. Another example is the Historic GT race. The video below shows a Trans Am that is all too similar to our pro touring cars.

So come, enjoy, get on track if you want and be a part of the Classic Motorsports Mitty. Feel free to post, pm, email or call with any questions.

OK Is the 129 for the car? Or per person?
Would my basicly stock Z28 be welcome? I would like to see what it'll do then see how much it and I improve when the next event comes along. Thanks Jamie

Drew Ewing does not let his handicap slow him down. We have raced him in NASA American Iron and his E46 M3 with the SMG trans will run 1:38/1:39 laps at Road Atlanta. We ran the Mitty from 1984 to 2001 with our '68 AMX and our two AMC IMSA cars.
We now only do NASA events and they have a Time Trial class.

The $129 is for a one person and the car they are going to bring into the event.
If someone is coming , just as a spectator , they can just get the daily tickets or the 3 day pass..

...but you are welcome to come and go as you please. And you can choose your own level of track time at the gate: Parade Laps or Touring Laps. Also you can test drive a new MX-5 Miata on the Kumho Autocross.
Expect to see a lot of totally awesome BRE racing Datsuns, as Peter Brock, founder of Brock Racing Enterprises, is the Grand Marshall for the event. The entire BRE race team will be on hand.

Lotus is the featured marque. So you can can be one of the first to see the new Lotus Evora in the skin.

As you can tell, this is a different kind of event for the pro touring community. Take Note: Opportunities exist to stretch your car's legs and watch some great vintage racing, this is is not a pro touring competition event. YET!
Please let us know ASAP if you will be attending. I have a meeting on Friday about our group's placement on the infield. It's okay if only 3 cars show up, but the more the better. I'm trying to get us a good spot.

I take that as a compliment of the highest degree, good sir!
so that I (and others) can prep for the future--are there any rules or regulations we should know about? I guess if you're just planning to run parade, probably not....but beyond that?

I can't wait to see some Formula 5000 cars !!
I went to a Formula 5000 race at Road At. back in the 70's. It was during the same time that I was roadracing bikes in the AMA and WERA. What an eye opening exp. that was. God those things were fast. And at this race we had some rain. They changed tires and only lost 2 seconds a lap. I wanna see them again.

The only restriction is the no-passing rule. That includes the pace vehicle leading the group. :)
While the touring laps are run at a faster pace than the parade laps, it's not an HPDE/Open Track type of event.
No helmets required, regular seatbelts are OK. Tires must be round and black.

alright, looks like jc and I are going to be there one way or the other--but the way things are going, I have a feeling we'll be spectating. This is the list of stuff I AT LEAST have to get done before we drive 4-6 hours and put the bird on ANY kind of track:
--Windshield Wipers--I currently have none. No wayyy I'm driving that far without 'em.
--Rear shocks--waiting on replacement parts.
--Bolt-check the car. Turns out I'm missing a lot of bolts after the rebuild, and the ones I've got aren't necessarily tight. I'm not going to put myself and other people at risk like that. This is the big one.
--It'd also be nice to have a tach and a correct speedo. Oil pressure and water temp would be even bigger bonuses. Anybody know how to hook a stock tach up to an LSx engine?
If I don't get those done...well maybe I can borrow my dad's 911.

Yes, his "megaphone" is falling off. The car is a 1969 Gurney Eagle F5000 car driven by Tony A2Z Adamowicz. Tony won the 1969 Formula/A (F5000) championship in this very car and drives well in todays F5000 series.

We always used to stay at the Best Western in Braselton when Year One had the experience.
It's the kind of hotel where you can walk out of your room into the parking spaces.

on a serious note - there is a known car theft ring operating in the area. I would not suggest you leave your car unattended outside of the event - you may find it or even your whole rig gone.
If anyone is leaving cars in an area overnight I would suggest we pool together for a common parking place for the cars and hire a security guard. I can arrange this no problem. Its usually 15 per hour for one - that is 1$ per hour per car for overnight security. 3 days x 12$ is 36 $ per car for the event. That is cheap.
Let me know if anyone wants to do this - it works best if everyone goes in on it. Guarding one car is no different than 15 of them.

My whole rig disappeared in Atlanta during the middle of the day from a crowded area with my 66 Mustang in the enclosed. Heed this mans warning and consider his offer cheap insurance. It cost me 5 grand to get back my busted up truck, ripped open trailer and what was left of the Mustang and other cargo. I was one of the lucky ones that get anything back. There has been an ongoing problem in that area for 5 years or longer.

Aside from sanctioned race cars we're expecting about 450 street cars to show up. Since they are free, general parade lap sessions will be packed. Expect the Saturday mid day session to be particularly nuts.
The standard touring sessions should be light and way more interesting. The standard touring sessions cost $35 per day. The VIP Touring Lap program is wide open and has a lot of perks. So if you want maximum track time and minimum traffic, go for the VIP ticket.
Here are details on the VIP deal:
-Three day "Super Ticket" admission (a $55 value)
-VIP parking area, Access to Friday and Saturday night HSR driver's parties (a $100 value)
-Touring lap session tickets-these allow you to drive your car on track with the touring group and allow for more speed than the Parade lap sessions (a $70 value)
-Access to a special VIP Paddock Tour to check out the cars and drivers up close (These are led by members of the Classic Motorsports staff—priceless!)
-Access to special viewing areas, a Classic Motorsports ticket holder and lanyard, and a copy of the official 2010 Mitty Program. (a $40 value)
The Mitty VIP Package costs a total of $129 !!
Tickets can be purchased here:

Not sure if I can swing the entire weekend, but I'll be there!
Probably just as a spectator or passenger on the track. It was sooooo much fun the last time I was on the track chasing a vette through the corners, but don't think I want to hurt the honda anymore right now, lol.

Things that are making it more likely that I'll be able to bring the bird:
--parts for rear suspension finally are sorted out after ~3 weeks
Things that are making it less likely that I'll be able to bring the bird:
--Three final exams for my MS program the week before.
I, personally, will definitely be there though.

I usually to go to the Mitty and was planning on racing in Group 3.1 this year but our NASA race at CMP is the same weekend.
Not sure why you don't run NASA events in DE or Time Trialing if you want to run your cars. HSR events are not really geared for that.
The cars at the Mitty are awesome but it's a period correct race for the most part.
Given that, we in the NASA-SE are starting an "Open Vintage" race class, we hope to have the first offical race at RA in June.
No period correct rules, just 1975 and older race cars built to your taste.
If you want to race a vintage car but not have to build to period correct rules (e.g. use Modern suspensions, brakes, engines, etc...) then this is the class for you.
If you don't want to race but want to flog the crap out of your car, then DE and TT is great for that. These ain't no parade laps guys.

Hi!
We're promoting both NASA and HSR. We have set up a demonstration session with HSR to set up a pro-touring Time Trial class AND we are encouraging pro-touring enthusiasts to participate in HPDE and NASA.
It sounds like you could be a big help to my initiative. Please PM me with your contact info.

-brake leak
-shake downs

Honestly I don't know. I was too worn out to get it up in the air tonight, I was just pulling out of my neighborhood, rolled into it in second a little and something let go. Just a quick flashlight inspection showed that something is definitely wrong at the u-joint; it's sitting at something like a 25 or 30 degree angle, which makes no sense to me. Can't imagine that I could limp home on that, but maybe I got lucky. whether that's the cause or a symptom is yet to be seen.

We've been to the KIC for the last 3 or 4 years now, it is a really awesome event. We'll most likely be there this year, racing in the Can-Am group. You guys will like this... The car is a 1972 McLaren M8F Can-Am car. It's been dubbed "The McLaren from Hell" after it was burned to the ground in the mid 70's or 80's (?) and was rebuilt completely. We had a real monster of a motor built. 598 ci Donovan aluminum block, Lucas mechanical fuel injection, giant velocity stacks... It make over 1000 n/a hp and is a motor you can run all season revving to 7500 rpm non-stop. It weighs less than 2000 lbs. I used to think I knew fast, this is a different world of it! So if anyone is at the KIC, it would be awesome to meet you and you could check this beast out.

That McLaren is incredible. And bonkers. It's exactly the reason why I believe pro touring enthusiasts should mingle at events like the Mitty. Or the Monterey Historics.
If you car is unfinished or blowed up, come out to the Mitty anyway. This event is more of a history lesson on wheels than a driving event, so don't worry too much about bringing your pro touring car.

Jeff,
I'll be there Saturday and maybe ridging up with Robert.
I grew up hearing stories about these beasts. Dad was standing near the ridge (now the Porsche bridge) on the back stretch of Road Atlanta when the McLaren popped it and went veritcal. He has some pics of the aftermath. Amazingly fast cars.
The Kohler Intl event looks very interesting, I'd love to make it. I've never been to Road America and would love to see a Can Am car make more than parade laps.

That was Denny Hulme that blew over on the back straight in the Mclaren.
Mark Donohue had a severe accident there in a Porsche 917 .

Thought it was Denny but wasn't sure. Speed Vision showed the video once on Legends of Motorsport or show like that.
Charlie Kemp also had a blow over in a 917/10 the next year in the same spot. Roger Warrick did a print of the 917.

THERE IS ONE IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER !!:
This is NOT a driving event like Motor State Challenge , or Faceoff at Road America..
We are not going to get huge amounts of track time at this event ... YET ..
We are showing up at this event ( This Year ) as sort of an exhibition .
So that maybe we can get more track time in the future , and get our own class with HSR or NASA ..
So , I don't want any of you to be disappointed with the quantity of track time we get this weekend..
There will be hundreds and hundreds of cars in attendance and we are going to be worked into the track schedule as available..
We may not get as much track time this weekend as we would like...
This is primarily going to be a socializing event and NOT a driving event.
Just so everyone knows ...

Good question .
We do not have a huge tent , big enough to fit 15 cars under or anything.
We do have a tent for us to sit under during the event.
Security should be no problem.
The track is secured at the end of every day.
Hundreds of people leave their cars , rigs , and displays there over the weekend.
The problem would not be at the track , but if you left your car outside the track. ( Like in a hotel parking lot )

the only track time tomorrow will be if you purchased parade laps through the mitty site.
today we drove the track - it was more of a contribution to the sport for educational purposes since they only let us go a maximum of 40 mph on the laps so I struggled to keep it out of 2nd.
But its fine . there were some cool cars there and got to see them run and meet the acdc singer brian johnson.
Dont expect to come to the event and get to drive your car balls out though - the parade laps will be max 65 mph and will be in a line of cars.
If you have not driven the track - it will be fun - if you have driven the track already - you probably wont like it. I am not doing them because I have driven the track so many times and 65 mph is not enticing to me.

Well , I drove around the track during the lunchtime "parade laps " today.
It was fun , but of course we were behind some people who were just ...."parading" in a vintage Cobra.
I slowed up a couple of times and left a big gap so I could really get on the throttle ..
I got to about 80 or 90 mph..
I did not get a chance to participate in the "touring laps" at 6:45 this evening.( I had to do Inventory at the Dealership )
But , I plan to do the touring laps on Sunday evening.
Maybe they'll have a little more speed.
Like Jeff Hinkle said , we are really just attending their event ( this time) to educate the HSR Officials about our type of cars , and we are exploring a different option for a venue (for us) in the future.
I did , however , get to see ( up close ) several Lola T70's , including the car that won the inaugural Can-Am Championship !! ( Driven by John Surtees )
And the Audi R8 Lemans Prototype Driven by Allan McNish , Dindo Capello , and Tom Kristensen , that won the 24hr of LeMans Five Times !!
And a real Corvette C6R GT1 car. ( I love to compare this one to the C6 Z06 )

We had a blast yesterday. I'm trying to get my fiance interested in racing, so that we can have a hobby that we can both enjoy together. Seeing her face light up as that black mustang (the one that Brent posted a picture of) screamed by us was awesome for me! It gives me hope that she could possibly share my favorite hobby.....
It did take us about half the day to find the pro-touring guys, but one we did, I felt right at home! Jelvis is a great guy..... thanks for helping to keep this event as organized as for us as one man could, and hopefully next year, we can have our own class! Mike, your car and knowledge gave me a lot of inspiration for my Galaxie build. It was great to see a "full size" pro-touring car. Brent, it was nice to meet you and I'm sorry that we didn't get a chance to talk a little more. Steveo has to have one of the best personalities that I have ever encounterd. He's a great guy that can take half of a joke (sorry about the fender brace joke lol). Don't tell him, but I sat in his car while he wasn't looking, so Steve, sometime I'd like to talk to you about the driving ergonomics of your car and that lumbar thing on your seat (I want one...).
To everybody else I didn't meet.... maybe next time. Saw Amir drive by twice... (ba$tard would stop to hang out with us lol, he just did a drive by :machine:). I was also hoping to meet JP, shake his hand, and thank him in person for all of the help that he has given me through this site. But like I said, maybe next time.....
Thanks again to Jeff for helping set all of this up! And maybe we will get to meet everybody again at PSMC (where our cars will be the highlight of the event)!

I hope all of you enjoyed The Mitty, watching the races and walking the paddock is really cool.
I was a little concerned some of you may be disappointed in the Parade laps as that's all the are. It's nice to get out on a Historic track but it's not the same as flogging your car on it.
I'd suggest doing some DE's in NASA, that's the best way to start driving your car for what it was built for. Very controlled and they will put an instructor with you to start out. You will have a blast, no doubt.
Some of you might even want to progress into Time Trialing or racing over time.
We're kicking off our first Open Vintage Race at Road Atlanta at the NASA event June, that'd be a good event to sign up for DE, then you can drive your cars as you wish.
I ran at CMP last weekend instead of the Mitty, this is coming off T-14 just before hammering it to around 120 down the front stretch with the green machine on my tail feathers the whole way.
Edit: BTW, I forgot to mention, that Green 944 chasing me is right up PT's alley. It runs an LS engine. Some interesting combos some guys build to race.

The pace car people were trying to make sure that none of the "parading goobers" wrecked , by keeping us bunched into a tight slow group.
I was a little pissed , because I paid extra for "touring laps" ( which were supposed to be faster )and I was lumped in with a bunch of "parade lap " participants.

His Son Chris was on his crew during those years and we lost Chris Thanksgiving Day at the young age of 45. Mike and Allen,
You guys are top notch. People were absolutely drooling over your ElCo all weekend--and with good reason. Other than the touring lap glitches, the Classic Motorsports Mitty was an overwhelming success:
-Over 250 race cars and motorcycles competed in vintage racing.
-Another 450 enthusiast cars lined the grass.
-We supplied 10x10 tents for each car club.
-We set up a large vendor village with souvenirs, safety equipment and food.
-AMG provided ride and drives of their entire 6.3 Litre AMG fleet. Beating on new Benzos is fun.
-There were celebrities on hand including Brian Johnson from AC/DC, Adam Carrolla and some Playboy bunnies.
-We held three major parties: A Peter Brock / BRE celebration, a Mazda MX-5 Playboy Cup Series party and a Hella Night Into Day
AND HERE's THE BIG NEWS:
A few of us got together and held a pro touring demonstration for the HSR sanctioning body (Historic Sportcar Racing). The plan is simple: Convince HSR to create a Time Trial class for pro-touring cars WITHIN existing vintage races. Instead of boring parade laps, we wil get to hot lap our cars at full speed in front of the vintage racing crowd. Likewise, we could share the paddock with some extraordinary race cars. Think of it as a track day within a race wrapped in a party and run by an honest to goodness sanctioning body.
And here's the catch:
There's always a catch. They want to test the program at a smaller event before committing to larger events like the Mitty. We have an event picked out, but I have more work to do before making a formal announcement. That's fine, since like 12 people are looking at this thread. I'll make a big announcement when all of the pieces fall into place.
Thanks to Mike and Allen, Bret, Scott and Bill from Ridetech, Pat and crew from Year One and Jeff Hinkle for making our HSR demonstration a success. Here's a coupla pix.

Steevo, It was our pleasure to be involved. I can't wait to join the HSR crew as participating members. It was certianly worth the thousand mile round trip. Let me know how I can be of any further help in putting this together.

Finally got the pictures up, sorry for the delay!
There are 170 pictures and 8 small videos. I took over 450 pictures that weekend, lots of technical shots for my self, lol. Race cars have great ideas that transfer to our projects. They are all business!
