Well since my dad and I have geared up and started working on his Camaro project again (he dubbed "Trailer Trash Treasure") I figured I would go ahead and post up a build thread on it.
The car is a 1980 Camaro Z-28 that I bought for him about 8 months ago (he used to own one in the 80's). I painted it the color of his old car and now we are working on building the engine for it. It will have a 5.3l LM7 out of an 04 Tahoe. Plans for the engine include and LS6 cam, LS6 intake, a set of 317 heads milled .030 off an LQ4 (w/LS6 springs), and flat top 4.8l pistons all over a stock bottom end. We are hoping to just about double the factory 190hp with this combo. It will have a 4L60E out of a 2001 Camaro behind it with a little stall in the converter. The idea is to have a factory appearing 80 Z-28 with modern drivability and power. Let us know what you guys think of the car and the progress so far. All criticism is more than welcome!

The day I got it;

Looking good.
One of the first cars I ever did was a buddies 80 Z28 was the same color with a 383, T10 and 3.73 12 bolt unfortunately he crashed within 6 months.
Must say that valley made me cringe though, somebody wasn't very diligent with their maintenance regimen.
You have luck finding 4.8 pistons through the link I posted for you the other day.

Keep us posted on how the 5.3L combo comes out. Sounds alot like the Track Rat combo. I will likely have enough LS parts laying around to put together a nice 5.3L on the cheap at some point in time.

Hey Brian
what machine shop are you using, I'm looking for a machine shop here locally that knows how to work on LS motors. I'm building almost exactly what you are doing but more compression and cam
I'm shooting for 425-450 horse in my LS327 as I call my 5.3

are you looking for a place to do machine work and assemble? I use King Balancing in Glendale. They do pretty good work, been using them for a long time. I dont know if they do any assembly though. What kind of cam specs/compression are you going to run?

no I do the assembly my self I was talking about honing, polishing crank, measuring everything.
I'm going to use flat top pistons with my 61CC 706 heads should be in the neighborhood of 11 in comp probably a comp cams cam with
between 220-230 duration at 0.50 and 0.550-575 lift also going to use a LS2 intake with 90mm throttle body and headers

I ordered a set of Speed Pro 4.8 flat tops from Summit. Long story short they only sent me one of the 8 I ordered and upon calling them I find out that they only have 6 more in stock and dont plan on ordering anymore since they arent a commonly ordered item. I would have to wait (alot longer than I want) to get the last piston so I have to find another source (easier said than done since most only offer sets lol) that will sell me the final piston I need.

Nice work, take good pictures of the subframe when you do the motor mounts. Also, have you mentioned what accessory drive you are using? I will be treading this path with a second gen and I am really interested in seeing good pics of both which LSX adapter plates people use and how it works with certain accessory drives and oil pans.

I definitely plan on taking good pics of the process. I know alot of guys are swapping LSx engines into these cars now. Iam using TransDapt engine mounts and adapters. As for the accessory drive I plan on doing a corvette front drive as it puts the alternator and compressor up high so there will be no clearance issues with the frame. I dont want to do any cutting on the frame.

I should have the motor/trans mocked up soon, I need to get the stripes all installed while the front end is all on and lined up correctly. Then we'll pull off the front clip and mock the engine up in the car. My bro is going to shave the firewall before we install everything for good. Should have some pics of all that soon.

The LS2 cam chain assy requires a plastic "tensioner" a plastic block that bolts to the block with two bolts, or a different type that has rubbing blocks on the outside of the chain. Do you have a tensioner?https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/09/IMG_55751-1.jpg

It's not required David but I recommend the pieces. It gives stability to the chain at high RPMs especially. The chain and gears will function just fine without the guides though. I've used LS2 chain and gears on an LS1 without the guides no problem.

I can't believe you cut and polished the firewall! I guess if you're going to go with that vintage AC unit, you might as well show off the firewall. That ac unit would've cleared up a lot of room in my car, but I went the cheap way out.

That dash, however, is going to reflect a lot of light. I went with a low 20% gloss on mine. Are you sure you want to stick to that gloss?

She is moving right along. Everything looks great!
I forgot to ask this a while back but why did you go with the LS2 head gaskets? IIRC the 5.3L has a 3.78-inch bore, where the 5.7L LS1 is 3.90 inches & the LS2 is 4.00 inches...

claytonisbob
01-19-2011, 03:50 PM
I agree with cdoggy81, going with LS2 head gaskets will lower compression a bit. The 317 heads (even milled .030) are going to lower the compression as well (~ 66 cc). I will say they are definitely better heads than the original 706 castings that probably came on it. Some 5.3 head gaskets and 799/243 heads would be killer with those flat top pistons.

Otherwise the car is coming along nicely for sure :)

Finished stripping out the old carpet and tar paper today. That was quite the chore. We also put down a coat of POR-15 to give the sound deadening insulation a good foundation to stick to.

How much POR 15 did it take to do that much metal? Are you going with a sprayed or stick on sound deadener?

It didnt take much at all. I did all the interior, the entire subframe, sway bar, trans cross member and spindles all with less than a quart. I still have a little left. This stuff goes a long way and is very durable. Just dont get it on your skin lol it doesnt come off for anything.
Also we are using Second Skin Damplifier Pro stick on sound deadener.

So far I like it. Obviously I havent put power to it yet so I dont know if everything works correctly but the quality, instructions and customer service have been great. The company isnt Speartech. its SSP out of Mayer, AZ, here is the link; http://www.sspwiring.com/

Thanks, We used the Edelbrock 2nd Gen LS swap headers, the engine plates are from TransDapt. The oil pan is just a stock F-body and we arent quite sure what accessory setup we are gonna use yet. We have clearance issues down low and since we will have AC we have to do some homework on that

A few updates...
Just been working on a lot of the "new car" bugs lately. Had a transmission issue that kept us stuck in limp mode for a bit. Figured out the main trans connector was wired wrong. Ive since rewired that and all is good there. Been trying to chase a misfire in cylinder 7. Still not sure what is the cause of it (hopefully not more messed up wiring) Besides that and a few little leaks here and there we are ready to take the car down for the exhaust and front end alignment tomorrow. We are replacing the existing, non-mandrel bent exhaust (with cats) with a new aluminized 2 1/2" mandrel bend dual kit with Magnaflow 3-chamber mufflers. After all that is done just a few more loose ends to finish up like headliner, kick panel speakers and the final tuning and dyno run. Ill post up some pics of the exhaust install and hopfully a couple videos soon.

I have to admit, I was torn about having so much of the body color on the engine parts, but now that it is together, it really adds a nice touch.

it works well because of all the black in there for contrast. if the f/w and inners were body color it would be too much, imo. this looks great!

I too had a #7 misfire that I could not figure out!! If it is NOT the wiring, check the fuel injector...

After chasing 'trons for over a month, I finally went to the Chevy dealer; asked for their "best 'vette mechanic"; he threw it on their OBDII super machine; found out the #7 injector was starting to fail (weak); this in-turn gave a lean read and thus misfire...

Just my two cents...

TC

P.S. the car looks killer! 79-81 is my next project!

Killer job on the camaro! I love how under the show room stock look is hiding a nasty little home built ls 327 that no one would suspect. Im curious to hear what bugs you find that were throwing the misfire, etc. This was exactly what I wanted to do to a 5.3l that I have. Good luck!

I found a bad injector #5 the other night. Im pretty sure this was the "bug" that was causing my misfire issue. I have one on order from Rock Auto. Should be here by Friday. Then the car goes in for final tuning on Sat morning. If all goes to plan I will have some HP and TQ numbers to post up then.

So we figured out we had a bad injector. I ordered a new one from Rock Auto and it was stuck open and gas washed the cylinder yesterday after I installed it. Today we went down to a local GM dealer and $150 later we had a new, working injector. Here is a video of us getting it fired back up and burning out all the residual fuel in the exhaust system....

Did you find out if it was a coolant leak, or fuel at the tailpipe? Great job on the build, and thanks for all of the links!

Thanks! We found out that it was residual fuel that was in the exhaust system from the bad injector. Its running great now, not a bit of smoke. :)

We got the car tuned and strapped it to a dyno today. Since the drive shaft wasn't sufficient enough to make a pull in 3rd gear (tuner was afraid of it coming apart in 3rd) we did a pull in second instead. The car put down 311whp and 297wtq. Overall we are happy with the power numbers our little 5.3 put down. Not bad for a daily driver muscle car. Here are a couple videos...
