What a blast! That was a great event. My car did much better than its driver did. I did the autocross mostly in first and second (I was surprised it didn't bounce off the rev limiter); the "speed stop" was a hoot - standing start, accelerate as hard as you can down the track and then brake as late and hard as you can to end up in the stop box without overshooting (I had good speed 88+ mph, but braked too early) and the road course, which I utterly flubbed.

The irony was after beating hard on the car all morning, my cast aluminum power steering pump bracket let go (one of the mounting ears cracked off) about 2 miles from my house. I ended up having to cut the power steering pump belt and alternator/power steering belt off, but was fortunate that the AC belt also drove the water pump. By the way, a "manual" quick ratio steering box with 245-45-17's up front is not fun to drive. I could barely make the sharp and very slow turn into my garage.

If you ever get a chance to do one of the events, run - don't walk - to register.

I had a freakin blast out there today. There was just too much going on at the same time to catch it all. Mary and the OLC were running the autocross while the TCI car was on the Road Course while the DSE cars were doing the brake test. My head was spinning. I have over a gig of media uploading right now.......

Unfortunately this is with a point and shoot camera so the quality is meh.

Talk about fun, even as a spectator! What a greast time out there with some fellow gearheads. There were a few showboats out there, like the Stig, and Kyle Tucker hanging it all out!

Man do I need to get my car set up and compete in the next one!

That's a negative......

TCI running the speed stop challenge
This was almost poetic for Sal.

First pass he was a little timid.
http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e260/slow4dr/Run%20to%20the%20Coast/?action=view&current=100_0428.flv

second pass he was a little aggressive
http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e260/slow4dr/Run%20to%20the%20Coast/?action=view&current=100_0429.flv

third pass was........well...........perfect (as I understand it this run put him in the 2nd position for the day) After watching a bunch of cars make pass after pass after pass it was really cool to see Sal find the limits of the car that quickly.

Thanks to Bill and his team and the sponsors of RTTC Saturday at El Toro. I had fun with my car. Learned quite a lot from the other drivers there. And I also had the great luck to have my lucky #13 card drawn for the Forgeline Wheels. Thanks Frank Serafine, Prodigy Customs, Forgeline Wheels, DSE, Optima, Ridetech BF Goodrich, Baer brakes, Wilwood And to everyone involved, thank you very much. We are thinking of having two road course sessions for each driver the next time. seems that the course was a big hit and since everything went so smooth we had the extra time. As I posted earlier, we are going to do nothing but improve upon RTTC

Thanks for posting your little brother's pic's. Your dad called me yesterday, it sounded like a great time, wish I could've made it.

Kevin

Kevin your going to have to make it out to the next one! Your right, we did have a blast but how can you not have fun when your sitting behind the wheel pushing a car all day?

I just want to reiterate that your car handled great! I told the guys next to me "If he's selling frames or suspension components, I'll take 2!". It flat out handled. Congrats.

What a fun weekend that was! I still haven't calmed down from the weekend and I can't wait to do it again. I loved all of the events but the 2.2 mile road course was the most exciting for me. Only being my second time on a road course with MotiV8r I was still nervous and excited as well. What a blast!

I wanted to say thanks again to Detroit Speed & Engineering, RideTech, Baer Brakes, BF Goodrich, Speed by Spectre, Carbon Kustoms, Optima Batteries, Wilwood Engineering, Boze Wheels, Prodigy Customs & Forgeline Wheels, Bill & Melinda Howell, Yancy & Charise Johns, Danny, Mark, and all the people that helped out and volunteered for the weekend. Without all of you I would have spent my weekend doing something boring like taxes or tree trimming. LOL!

We also had people from Camaro Performers Magazine, Chevy High Performance, Super Chevy, Popular Hot Rodding and Power TV there as well.

I also wanted to say thanks for Frank Sarafine at Prodigy Customs for bringing MotiV8r out on Friday because I could not get away from work. I also wanted to say thanks to Mary Pozzi for her help on Friday.

Please help spread the word and maybe Bill can put together another event later in the year and every year. I'm ready to go right now.

Thanks to Henry D for the killer picture!

What a fun day and the tacos were KILLER!

I'm still dying to see what times I ran. Long story short, I didn't have a usable 1st gear which hindered things a bit. (with 2.73's in the rear, 1st is an important gear for the autocross and standing start type stuff)

I'll leave you with this:

9V3UvDXoqLM

Notice how the car shifts out of first gear at only about 2000-2500 rpm. Yea, that's a new problem.

-The Stig-
04-07-2010, 05:54 PM
Brett, I saw the page.. you ran like a 2:04 or so on the Big track. In comparison, Jon ran like a 2:02/03... I was behind with a 2:13.xx.

G8 is too heavy, with too little tire, too little brakes, and under powered. And the gearing is all sorts of wrong, 2.92s blow.. the short ratio 6-speed is nice, but 2.92s... really? C'mon.

She doesn't like fast transitions, weight over loads the tires and you slip. Although, the 300TW Sumitomos had a nice handling characteristic. Very linear grip feeling, you could feel when it would slip (which it did a lot)... very predictable though.

Had I been a bit more liberal with the throttle and some aggressive steering inputs on the Autox, I could of easily drifted the entire thing (as could a lot of people out there!)... time would of been stupid slow though haha.

Style points maybe??? :)

Brett, You run pretty smooth, was that you that let out a large puff of smoke during a run? I wasn't sure but if you blew your modulator then that would explain the shifting issue.

Stiggie, well, that was the most entertaining run....from a 4 door

What kind of puff of smoke? This video shows one. I think it was just a bit of tire smoke that I wasn't even aware of while driving. My last lap's reckless nature resulted in a spin . . . and a small brake fire (everything turned out to be fine.)

qlSRf6wzYww

I don't know what is going on with the transmission. I think I've just worn the poor near stock TH350 out. The problem first occurred during a pass at the local 1/8th mile drag strip but then was fine the rest of the night. When bedding in my new Hawk pads the night before RTTC, I tried to hold it in 1st gear a couple of times and it had trouble. At RTTC, the car only held 1st gear during my very first autocross run. After that, it would just give up sooner and sooner. I don't know what's going on, and it had me seriously stressed out on Saturday.

I don't know much about the workings of automatic transmissions. What's a modulator?

Brett,

You were looking really good out at the track until you had the brake trouble. Thanks for sharing the footage.

As far as the vacuum modulator...It's a device that uses vacuum as the signal to tell the transmission when to shift under most driving conditions. It's easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. When it goes out it can cause the car to smoke (transmission fluid is getting pulled into the motor).

The trans modulator will usually cause late shifts not early. Another thing to check is the detend cable at the carburator linkage (came off) and check to see if the cable might have broken. Broken detent cable would be more likely to cause early full throttle shifts. The puff of smoke cause very well be a split diaphram in the modulator though.

Even with an automatic, I would be shifting manual. I think it's time for a transmission rebuild and add a shift kit while you're at it. Also, change that rear gear to a 3.42. It will awaken your car.

hehe, thanks jon . . . just don't tell any of that to my budget : )

Thanks all for the info and advice. Perhaps I should make another thread as to not highjack this one, but I'll go on anyway.

I do shift the car "manually" and I do leave the kickdown cable detached (I figure I can tell the car when it needs to downshift . . . and I never got the proper adapter for my Edelbrock carburetor . . . please don't snicker too much at that). That way, if I want first, I just leave it in "L" and if I want second, I just go to "S" and the transmission does as I tell it. Since the problem arose, the trans will no longer follow orders and will go to 2nd whenever it feels like it. It will, however, hold second just fine without going into third. :dunno:

Try disconnecting the vacuum on the trans (this way the trans thinks you are at full throttle). I don't have any vacuum hooked up on my 350 and it has never shifted itself, even in "drive". I have to shift it, like a manual valve body, but it won't let me "oops downshift".

Edit: Nor do I have my kickdown connected.

79-TA

Nessumsar
04-08-2010, 01:09 PM
Yea, it basically makes it a manu-matic.

But you cannot start off in 3rd or 2nd, it will automatically shift down when you get to 10, and 5 mph.

I'll take you for a drive in it sometime if you want.

GM autos without a shift kit still will shift into the next gear even if you put it into 1st or L. It is a warrenty feature for GM to cut down on the boneheads who would yank a shifter into 1st at 90 mph causing an engine or trans failure. My friend had a 85 Suburban 2500 that when we were towing with it we tried to use 2nd to gain engine braking but it would not down shift when manually held in 2nd, we were going to fast for the valve body to downshift. It took me to the bottom of the hill and one set of warped rotors to remember that it had never gotten a shift kit and that we should have slowed before downshifting.....Do'h!

The odd thing is that it always worked and held first before (ie drag racing, goodguys autocross, high school shenanigans, and even the first autocross run of RTTC.) I hope i haven't worn out whatever band wizardry that is used to engage the gears.

Thanks Jon, that sounds like a plan . . . but will the raccoon relinquish his seat so I can sit in the front?

I doubt it is anything with the band, more likely a valve in the valve body.

Ben my paparrazi guy has uploaded about 100 raw footage vids to his marketing folder so far. I browsed through them and picked the good ones.(note to self: Don't let Evan video again :enguard:) Ben will eventually go through and edit them one by one and host them on our site.

It seemed that DSE/OLC/Finch & Mary were running opposite events than us so we didn't get much if any footage of their cars.

Dammit I wish that wasn't my last lap! Pushed a little too hard. HA! Jack and I had a great time. Thank you again for all your help with the car. I think we will be in for some events come fall. I've got a kid on the way in May. Other wise I'd be at the Costa Mesa autocross.

I'm with Mary! I think we were some of the last few to run the road course and we must have pin balled it back in forth in the race line fore all of our laps.

Thank you! Some future racers.

We'll get them next time. Jack was real nervous about running the car hard and that was the first time I got to drive it other than around the block once. I can see now, we needed a little more brake bias in the front.

I'm picking up a 69 Camaro and we're going to build a TCI 69 set on kill. :machine:

I am still jealous you guys got the pimp tires from Nitto. I can't wait until the NT05's are available in the sizes we need. I think Sal is going to bring back your wheels and tires to Costa Mesa if you guys go. I wish I could have been there earlier in the AM to see you guys run the road course.

:yum: on the '69, I can't wait to see that one

How did the Popular HotRodding Laguna and the White Chevy Stepside do on those 15" rims and tires?

In video of the truck, it seemed like he was sticking well, any video clips of the Laguna?

Thanks

The Laguna was running 100 treadwear drag radials on all four corners..

The truck was a hoot to watch.. own by John Barkley and the guy had a freakin blast in it.
