Just finished spraying the undercarriage with PPG DBC basecoat. The color is a pale blue with TONS of silver metallic. It turned out looking really nice (first time painting a car). I have a couple questions before I start spraying where everyone can see.

What is the proper way to spray a high metallic base coat?

My first pass, I kind of just lightly misted.

Second pass, I sprayed so the color was all uniform.

Third pass, I sprayed wet until I could see the metallic start to flow out.

I'm really happy with the way it looks, just want to make sure I'm doing it right before I start on the top of the car. Any input greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Nate

Hi Nate, No need to do a first mist coat. DBC basecoat is friendly enough to do 50% overlap medium wet coats. Heavy coats take to long to flash and you need to make sure you allow proper flash time. I feel heavy wet coats could cause some issues, such as zebra striping or improper metalic flo called modeling and even runs.

Good luck

use slow reducer, medium wet first coat, second same way with 50% overlap, once you got coverage, last coat should be the coat where you adjust your metallics, where you apply light coats in X-pattern to control metallics, some metallic colors will lay down easy, some are PITA ,but if you can keep the surface wet enough for the metallics to lay down right without mottling or dry overspray, you're good to go

When spraying metallics, I've always grounded the car. Don't ask me why, something my dad taught me years ago, and he use to own custom body shops way back in the day. Good luck, and post some pics.

Thanks for all the tips guys! Here are some pictures of the undercarriage. Did this all laying on my back with a light in one hand and an Anest Iwata LPH 50 with a 130 ml rotating cup. The flash makes it look really blue, the pictures without the flash are more true to the color. When I picked up the paint I wasn't happy with the color so we put a little yellow in it and a ton of metallic silver.

Shouldn't even post this one, Oops missed a spot! I painted the firewall and undercarriage back to the frame crossbrace a few months back with the rearend in and subframe out- had a little trouble getting the gun up there with the rearend in. Planning on fixing this on friday.
