View Full Version : Project Nite Hawk (69 Camaro)

Sorry but this is ANOTHER 69 Camaro Build...

The Name: The name is reference to the movie Step Brothers. Since my 95 TA (Green Dragon) was named after another Will Ferrell classic "Old School" (Frank the Tank's Red Dragon), I thought it fitting to name my 69 Camaro Night Hawk. When the step brothers meet each other they introduce themselves as Dragon and Night Hawk.

The Builders: All work will be done by my father and myself. He has been building Hot Rods for 30+ years, and I am a Mechanical Engineer.

The Timeline: With the EXTREME expense of the parts I am planning and the cost of starting a family I don't see this being done until 2013-2014.

The Parts: What I have currently...

-Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of my Camaro on this computer.

-Custom 2x3 Jakes Rod Shop Full Frame

:Tubular Upper and Lower Control Arms (C6 Corvette Geometry)

:C6 Corvette Spindles

:Splined Swaybars front and rear

:JRS Watts Link

:JRS Torque Arm rear end setup

:Chassis Engineering Fab9 Housing

:Bilstein Coilovers (Custom Valved)

:Hypercoil Springs

-Strange Aluminum Center Section with 3.90 gears and 35 spline Wavetrac Posi
-19x9.5 w/7.0" Back Space Forgeline So3P 3-piece forged wheels with Graphite Centers, and 275/30 R19 Michelin PS2's
-20x12.5 w/8.0" Back Space Forgeline So3P 3-piece forged wheels with Graphite Centers, and 335/30 R20 Michelin PS2's
-Custom 15" Wilwood Brake Kit
:Front Wilwood TC6 6-piston calipers
:Rear Wilwood BSL4 4-piston calipers
:Rear Mr. Parker External E-Brake calipers

Future Plans...
-427ci LS3/7/x with a 4.5L Whipple Supercharger
-T56 Magnum Tranny
-Lots of custom body work (look at my 95 TA build to get an idea what my father and I can do)
-Marquez or Felser interior
-Lots of other misc stuff...

I am in the same boat as you. I am a mechanical enigneer, recently married, trying to buy a house and my falcon is a father son project.

This is going to be a very cool build.

Thanks guys!
It has been on hold for 2 years, while I finished my 95 TA. But now that the TA is about done and I really want to get going on this project I am a little pissed about spending $50k on a 95 Trans Am!!! It just kind of started to snowball!
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63864

I have changed the spelling of the name a couple times now, but I think I am set with "Night Hawk". Spelling it "Nite" just kind of made me sound illiterate.

Yeah this is kind of my last big project before the wife and I have kids, so I am going ALL OUT.

you got a hell of a lot of $$$ in parts already! Great start!

I hear Pro-Touring is dead though. ;) Hopefully we're not all in electric torque monsters in 2014.

I totally forgot to tell what colors we are thinking, right now! As much time as I have I will probably change my mind, but we have been set on these colors for about 2 years. It is a custom mix tangelo and sunset orange and LOTS of Pearl, with a large wide graphite strip over the hood and trunk.

This is a 93 TA that my father and I built with left over parts from my 95 TA...

I agree, I wonder why 2 x 3 rather than 2 x 4 though. I'm gearing up to build my frame and was planning 2 x 4, but if 2 x 3 is just as tough, and obviously lighter, I may have to do a slight redesign.

Guys, it has 2x4 front rail, the perimeter is 2x3x.120 including the rear rails. This is a custom chassis, and was built to the customers specs. It needs a full 8-10 point cage to be used, Luca is planning on doing a 12 point cage. If your building a perimeter chassis I would recommend 2x4x.120 if not running a cage, or even a 4 point.
we did this for more head room with the flat floors (doing this will allow about stock height head room) and luca wanted it light and is doing a full cage.

When using the watts with your Tq arm do you have to modify the floor pans like with the LD 3 link? Can this be made to work with factory frame rails?

I think Jake is just trying to be nice, I know I had to have bugged the hell out of him! He does some amazing work, I am very pleased with the frame it is going to be the base of a sweet ass 69.

FYI on the 2x3 unless you really want a flat floor, or plan to run a roll cage definitely do the 2x4. I ran the stress numbers on 2x3 versus 2x4 and the difference in weight was MUCH LESS than the loss in strength. So the little bit of lost weight comes at the cost of a much "bendier" frame.

The car is back in MT at my dad's shop, and I don't have any pics here. There isn't much to look at yet. I bought a $5500 roller, if that tells you anything. From the firewall forward is all new Dynacorn sheetmetal still in the black primer, the rest is decent shape but not worth the trouble to keep. We are going to replace ALL of the other body panels (roof, doors, rear quarters, rear filler, rear window panel, trunk lid, and possibly rockers). I'm hoping AMD has there roof skins and doors ready by then.

Jake,
Will all of your Apex subframes be using the fabricated upper and lower control arms with the C6 spindle or is this a one off? Just wondering the reason for the fabbed arms compared to your normal. Track width?

GrnDragon-what is your hub to hub track width on this?

Thanks, Wes

hotrdblder
04-25-2010, 01:49 PM
wes, No those are an option, they are d.o.m monoball control arms, for absolute control over geometry even in the toughest conditions. I will be releasing them soon. We have a few sets being tested in street use as well as wheel to wheel racing both in my aix camaro and a late model vette. They will bolt onto any corvette c5/c6 chassis, have all the correct mounts for lower shock and sway bar to be direct fit.
jake

p.s- his track width is 1 inc narrower then our normal offering due to him already having his wheels.

GrnDragon
04-25-2010, 05:17 PM
My hub to hub width is 60.25", so with my brakes and wheels and tires the outside tire to outside tire is right around 68".

I wasn't going to say anything until I finished the mock up, but since this thread had some visitors I cannot wait to talk about it...

I am modifying the brake kit AGAIN!!! I am selling the rear Billet Superlite 4 piston calipers and buying another set of the HUGE TC6 calipers (the ones on the left) for the rear. I called Wilwood and explained what I was doing and they hooked me up pretty good on the price of another set. Luckily, they had the "older" anodize calipers on the shelf (which matches my fronts). So hopefully in about 2 weeks I will have some pictures to post with a complete rolling frame.

November 2010 UPDATE....
Talk about a slow build, at this rate it might be done by 2015!!!
I finally got it rolling!
The FIRST GMR Full Floater setup with 1/2 inch studs and 5 x 4.75" bolt pattern, I am still waiting for a couple parts but I have enough to make it roll. I designed all the brake mounts and hats and had them cut on a waterjet.

Some shots of the rear end with the Custom Gussets that Jason at GMR did for me, and a custom pinion angle adjuster I added to the JRS Torque Arm using a AME drive shaft safety loop and some off the shelf laser cut brackets.

It is a Torque Arm setup with that upper link only acting as a pinion angle adjuster, if it were a 3-link the upper bar would be chassis mounted.

Thanks for the comments guys, I am going to be trying to clean some stuff up over the winter, add some strengthening material in areas I think might be weak (you can see the piece I have taped in place on the rear of the frame, there is another location on the front that I am going to add some 2x3 tubing),setup a rear splined sway bar, and hopefully mount a fuel cell. I have some things that need to be fixed, but at least it rolls now!

Does anyone know what kind of tolerances are allowable on solid axle setups for camber/toe-in/toe-out. The housing ends are SUPPOSED to be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground, but mine has about 3/16" toe-in. The measurement from the outside of the tire to the outside of the tire front to rear is approx 3/16" different (less in the front). I just don't know what an allowable amount would be, or if I need to think about taking it into a shop with a jig and re-mount the ends?

No, I did the Pinion Adjuster. I am doing all the work i can myself, but since I don't have a frame jig or rear end jig I bought the frame from JRS and had GMR do the rear end housing work.

Luca, Looks great. Nice job on the pinion adjuster, will work good in your custom floor application.
Just to note, the frame is a 2x3 perimeter frame and NEEDS a full cage to structure it. it cannot be used without a full cage. If a cage was not wanted, then 2x4 tubing would need to be utilized.Luca wanted more clearance and has plans for a full cage.

Well it's been almost 2 years and I haven't been moving very fast. Having a baby really stalls progress, and I needed to buy tools.
I ended up buying a 210 hobart MIG, Large Ingersol Rand Air Compressor, ProTools Tubing bender and Bead roller with a couple different dies. So I have been trying to learn how to use everything, mainly the welder (I still cannot make the stacked dime look, but I am getting closer). My dad is going to have to "fix" some of my really crappy welds.

It's been 2 tough years dealing with vendors, one in particular has given me the run around for almost 3 years now but I got MOST of my products from them so I am done dealing with them and I will hold back any more ranting. You just won't see me mention their stuff in my build any more.

But the other company that I have been dealing with the last 2 years has been GREAT to me and that is GMR, their stuff does cost a bit but it is worth EVERY dime and the support you get from them is second to none. I just received updated/upgraded parts in the mail last week for my C5/C6 hub kit free of charge and they sent them without me having to ask.

Here are some pics of my new stuff...
-GMR fabricated housing with custom mounts
-GMR rear floater
-GMR front hub kit
-Custom SS tank mounted
-Bump stops mounted
-Rear swaybar setup done and main watts mount relocated to work with swaybar tube (the original cross tube that the coilovers are still mounted to is going to be cut out once I decide if I am going to design and build a cantilever setup or just use my new coilover mounting tabs. It looks kind of stupid with the 2 cross tubes right next to each other.)
-Rear brakes finally done

I know it's not much progress and the frame still isn't mounted to the body but it's something. There are more pics at my Cardomain site.

So good to see a body on the frame! Something about the run down body on the new fancy chassis is doing it for us. Any reason why you chose to switch to cantilever?

Hey Dragon

Where did u get the cantilevers? Nice.

The only reason I went to the cantilever setup is because I thought it would be cool and I wanted to design my own rockers. I designed them to be cheap to manufacture, since they are a 3 piece design there is virtually no machining required (just honing the main bore for the delrin bushings). The 3 pieces are cut on a water jet and then bolted together versus CNC machining a large billet chunk of aluminum. I actually built 3 sets and did the R&D on my 1995 Trans Am. It is REALLY cool to see the coilovers working and moving when I look in the rearview mirror.

That's all the reasoning we need. Cantilever definitely has more cool factor!

Whoa...what an AWESOME build. :-)

I get the general idea of a cantilever suspension, but I'd love see some close up pics of how you made it all work together on your frame. Very nice work!

Looks really nice.

Know put the sheet metal back on the car just like it is and do a crazy nice engine bay, interior and trunk and blow peoples minds when the walk up to the car.

ps maybe 86 the package tray so they can see the full suspension

So another 2 years...

Just a couple changes.
-Almost complete custom full cage 1.75" tubing
-Mounted up the front and rear cantilever suspension setup

Nothing like working in the dirt!

X2 - any updates on this one? I am very curious about one aspect(among many others) of your build. How did you know what tires(width) and wheels(width and BS) to buy that far in advance and have the stance wind up so damn perfect on the body? My car is just out of paint, getting assembled and some glass and then she will be home - I have been sweating bullets trying to figure out what tire/wheel combo will fit on a totally aftermarket pro-tour build:confused:

I had MANY of the random "I need to go in the garage to measure something" quote to my wife for months trying to ensure that the wheel back space and width would be perfect on the car. I measured a couple 1969 camaro's with nice fitting wheels/tires from outside to outside and worked backwards from there to make sure that my wheels were correct. It is SUPER stressful buying wheels and hoping that you get the proper measurements for a custom setup!

Sorry for so few updates on this project I have only been able to work on it once per year when we visit our parents in Montana, I live in WA state. I had planned to bring it out here this year but my 1995 Pontiac Trans Am engine ended up being bad and now it is under the knife again. So there will be limited updates for at least another year.

Haha - glad I am not the only one then. never thought of working backwards - great tip! Thank you sir.

Just saw this project for the first time! I've probably watched that movie 20+ times! Love the analogy to the Firebird and Camaro!

Your 95 T/A grew up and moved out of your parents' house. Hopefully your Camaro will soon too! ;-)

My yearly trip back to Montana, we are trying to buy land so I might be able to move it out here in a couple years.
Tried my other Forgelines and I am really liking them, the only progress I made was a couple more bars in the cage.

I put the ZX3P's on one side and the SO3P's on the other...choices...choices...

I think this project may turn into a lifetime project. Life just gets in the way with limited funds and time.
Plus, I started another project, a 1977 2WD K5 Blazer that is snowballing, just like all my other projects.

It is finally in all new exterior metal, the cage is complete, still a ways to go but nice to see it without rust holes.

I need an engine and tranny to really get it progressing, but I don't have $20k+ for the engine I want...yet.
