Is Air Ride Suspention illegal?
Maybe a a lil more info is needed in your question? As far as I know its not illegal on any streets, or racing tracks in the US. Were you thinking of a specific arena?
Air ride suspensions have been in use on the roads for a very long time. As stated they have been used in the trucking industry and in commercial cars for some time.
They are just a different type of spring. We have many types of springs. Leaf, coil and torsion are some. An air bag is just another way to suspend the vehicle. They work out pretty well for some folks.
Are you looking at installing an air spring suspension? JR
Is Air Ride Suspention illegal?
I know the letter of the law in California does state that any suspension modified from factory is illegal, I think those early laws were made to stop manipulation of vehicles suspension while moving, back in the 80's we had Hydraulics on our mini trucks and it was the manipulation of vehicles suspension while moving, that often was targeted

I have air ride installed on one of my cars but everyone told me that it was illegal here in WV. So I stopped driving the car but have thought about driving the car again but I would have to get a new inspection sticker "we have to have these to drive on the road in WV". Just wanted to know if air ride was illegal.

I'd check with the state police. Looks like your tests are minimal saftey tests like here in Virginia. I don't think replacing the springs and shocks with airride constitutes defeating the safe operation of the original suspension. Good luck.

I would imagine/hope that if that were the case air suspension manufacturers would have a legal disclaimer prior to selling their product....
I am in the process of installing a Ride Tech system and I did not see such disclaimers....
also, many of our cars have "modified/altered" suspensions and even though that is the law in some states it can be interpreted in many ways....for example replacing springs and shocks with "air" springs and shocks would not be what I would consider altering the suspension...
I think most trucks are produced by the factory with air suspension, so that would not be considered "modifying" the factory suspension....
let us know what they say when you go in for your sticker...

Hold on a sec... This is news to me. I was a Deputy for LA County for 20 years and never came across that vehicle code. But, that damm book is HUGE! But, I dont remember seeing any blanket code like that. Im sure you will find the code you remember seeing in the link below. Id like to see it.
Pretty hard to enforce.
Here is the vehicle code for your sleepy time reading :) Its all pretty cut and dry. And I mean really dry. Some boring reading there. But for a guy that doesnt want the popo messing with him its a great tool. JR

Oh and for a PS. My car only violates maybe two of the codes. And it is heavily modified, including some dark tint. My two violations are a loud exhaust and no front plate. The completely modified under carriage, fuel system and brake lines, all the electrical, all the glass, all the sheetmetal and the complete suspension. Some of those items are pretty serious to be messing with if you dont know what you are doing (me, Im a novice). But the california vehicle code allows me to tinker with all of that. Kinda scary if you think about it. They would rather focus on front plates, loud stereos and exhaust, protruding tires, higher than looks good lifts and so many other IMO minor issues. But they will let a guy mess with the steering and brakes until he wrecks into the van load of kids coming home from a football game.
Its a double edged sword for me. I hate the thought of a guy being able to ruin his braking system so it can fail at the wrong moment. But no way in hell do I want the government telling me what I can do to my car in my garage. So thanks to alot of the aftermarket suppliers that produce some safe products, and give a decent instruction "slip" along with the parts. Read the very fine print on the slips. More words than the instructions. LOL
Oh, and for tint in cali. It only reads you cant apply anything on the window, like film tint. If you are getting all new glass like I did the tint is in the glass. No violation.
Laws!!!! Errrr!!! Meant to protect us? Meant to limit us? Im not sure. I guess that whole thing is outta my pay grade. Im not an attorney or a legislator. Im a retired dude messin with my car in my garage. I do love having a 62 car though. They only ask for their fifty bucks a year and leave me alone. JR
