so in my sterring i have about an inch and a half of dead space. I have so far tightened up the steering box which helped slightly but mostly just made the steering heavier. I also checked under the car at the piman arm bushing, but that seems to be in good shape. any ideas why this couls be happening or how to fix it!? thanks

the pitman arm can look really good but you need to remove it from the steering box and the see how loose the arm is on the drag link, often the pitman gets loose around the base of the drag link to pitman arm area

Thats some good info. And dont forget to dial back on the steering box it you find a loose part. Alot of preload can chew up the box in a hurry. JR

I did the same on the Nova, helped a bunch. Like JRouche said, make sure it isn't too tight, you can burn the pump up too!

I sat in the car turning the wheel lock-to-lock while my dad slowly tightened the worm gear, I went until I felt it tighten up near lock (this is were you will be the tightest). I have all new rod-ends and idler arm; with my 15" steering wheel I have about 3/8-3/4" play.
