Looking at purchasing a 4l80e trans for my 67 camaro (found some on Craigs list) was wondering what years are better to use? There is a 1992 out of pickup rebulit with 5000 miles on it or 2003 out of a van to choose from. Do these transmissions come with a long or short shaft tail housing like the 350/400 have. I am building a 454 mark-4 big block for my car hoping for around 575 horse. To install this in my car what cross member do I use 350 turbo or 400? Does any body have a rough idea what this will cost me for the wiring and whatever else I might need? Any help or suggetions would be appreciated.

Rick,
The 2003 is likely to be in better shape but the 92 model will fit the floorpan better due to cooler line location.

You will need to either run it as a full manual setup or use electronic control. I am a dealer for the Baumann Controller.

You'll need to fabricate or buy a suitable crossmember, the 4L80E mounting location is further towards the rear than either the TH350 or TH400.

4L80E's are either short tail, 4x4 (no tailhousing), or the motorhome setup with rear e-brake.
Easy to identify which one you need.

Give us a call, I would be glad to answer any questions you have, we've done this conversion several times.

Rich,
I just finished rebuilding and installing an early model 4l80e in my 68 Camaro. Other than the core I purchased all my parts from Jake. I’ve got a little over $2,500 I the entire rebuild and install. This includes core, rebuild kit, controller, converter, driveshaft shortening and some replacement hard parts. I built my own crossmember using 1 x 2 rectangle tubing. Jake has been very helpfully during this build and install. Good luck.

I used a Compushift controller for my swap in my dually, but with a vendor/sponsor offering his services and a good testimonial right below it, I'd take him up on his offer.

Dittos for Jake's Performance as well. I have a 4L80E he built for me in 2008 and its been great. I made my own crossmember by just cutting up an old factory T-400 crossmember and welding on some hardware store steel plate for proper spacing. Works fine. Putting one of these trannys in a Pontiac ain't cheap but it's a blast to drive.

Jakeshoe 4L80E (local pickup): $1700 plus $400 core charge = $2100
Compushift TCU ($1100) with the optional display ($190) and optional paddle shifter ($425): $1750 shipped
PTC lock-up Torque converter, 3300 stall and nitrous anti-balloon plates: $800
TCI transmission adapter: $60
Dipstick: $60
Driveshaft: $300
Special low profile swivel line connectors: $40
Misc (Welding): $100

Total cost: $ 5210.00

A place of concern in a '67 is the shifter linkage, it's tight!
