I'm looking for a set of inexpensive wheels for the Corvair and I'm having a hard time finding the right look. I'm not usually one to be indecisive, but this one has me stumped. I'm going for a mean, low and lean pro-touring look. I guess some would call it a "street fighter" look. Here's a couple of inspirations:

Rally Wheels:

Cragar Soft 8 Wheels:

My car currently:

I'm a huge fan of the black Cragars on dark colored cars, but I'm not sure if I can pull it off on a bright blue car. I also like the rally wheels if they're painted dark, but again not sure what they'll look like on a blue car. I'm not planning on painting the car for another couple of years.

Any thoughts? I'm drifting towards the Cragars right now but I could use some outside opinions!

I like the Cragars, I like the IROC's.

I think that the IROC's painted gloss black would look really great and would be somewhat lighter.

The Corvair is looking really great!

I'd stay away from the steel wheels due to the weight. Even with weight distrubution on a Corvair, you're going to feel it in the steering response. Also, it's getting harder to find high performance tires in the 16" range like the IROC rims. Many are be discontinued, and most are old technology. Stepping up to 17s would help alot.

Check out TonyL's Corvair update. He's running 18s and managed to fit some massive meats with a little work. It look unbelievable.

That's a good thought about weight - these cars are pretty sensitive to changes like weight, offset, etc. so that's something to consider. The stock IROC wheels will bolt right in with just about the correct backspacing for the Corvairs, and apparently they fit without much need for rolling the fenders or any other modification. Plus they're cheap :twothumbs

I just looked at TonyL's thread, no idea how I missed it before. Usually wheels that big look strange on corvairs but that car just sits perfect - I think he's got some suspension mods done too so he might be a good source of information about setting up the car.

Note: almost all guys who run IROC wheels run fronts only. Because they rub. (I could show you a way around that. LOL)

Some 17 inch corvette ralleys would be cool too.
