View Full Version : 1965/1966 mustang..wheels too big?

Anyone have a picture of a 65 or 66 mustang coupe with 20s tucked under the back ? Just wondering if it would look okay if it was low enough...?

I was going with 18x10s but I got a deal on these 20x10 boyd smoothies and thought I might try it with 18s up front...

I'm guessing you'll be mini-tubbing the back to fit the 10" wheels, I would say that the 20x10 could be okay if you tucked the wheel better in the back, maybe 2 or 3 inches lower in the back. What kind of suspension are you planning on running in the front/back? Are you planning any other body mods, side skirts flares etc?

streetrods
03-22-2010, 09:39 AM
yeah it's mini tubbed so the width isn't a problem.. once the car is put back together it should drop a couple of inches....

No other body mods planned

I think 20s are too big and there is a lack of performance in that size. A 17 is perfect.

That white 67 or 68' fastback that was a SMOY finalist had 24's? in the back...Stance is more important that wheel size IMO. You need to have them tucked! Mustang's are kinda close in size to Nova's, after deliberating for months I finally pulled the trigger for a 18/19 combo.

I think the 68 will fit a 275 on a 10" wheel without a minitub

67greengt

depends on the car... it seems as though every car varies quite a bit.
I haven't talken any pics of the mini tub, but I can tell you how to do it.. it's pretty straight forward.

You want to cut the inner wheel tub out by starting with a tape line along the seam of where the inner/outer wheel tub are welded together. The tape line will give you about an inch of lip left of the inner wheel housing to weld your new tub to for strength; from your cut along the tape line you want to go about 4" inward towards the inside of the car. You'll notice the biggest gains in the front and rear corners on the wheel wells as the factory ones are tapered. This will allow you to retain your factory interior panels. Based on my 295/35/18's I can still fit my interior panels and I may even go a bit more just to have some more room. I'll take some pics when I get a chance.

Hope this helps

Let me know if you have any questions

I bought two new inner wheel wells... cut the old ones long..then moved them in towards the gas tank about two inches each side... then trimmed the edge of the rear frame rails and welded in support.

with a 68 you should have more room but I know on a 66 the springs are the first problem you run into.. I did a 3 inch spring relocation on mine.. next time I'll just do a four link though...

Thanks! Looks good.. not a fan of the whole look but the wheels work well.. Small tire...probably a 25 sidewall or something..

streetrods
03-28-2010, 06:29 PM
okay...so those are 20x8.5 on the back of that car with 255 35 20s... and 17s up front... If I go with a 285 30 20 on my 10s I will have about the same sidewall... also think 18s up front will look better than 17s with 20s.. But who knows I can't pull the trigger on the 20s yet...

I was just at a rim shop yesterday ordering my 18x8's (do you think i will have a problem with fitting them? and what size tires should i go with?) but i saw a 1967 mustang on 22" rims. I took pics so here it is:

I just got my 18x8s on my car this weekend. The backspace of the rim is 4 1/2. The tires i went with are 225/40/R18.

Bryce
04-12-2010, 11:37 AM
why only a 225? Looks good. I think you could have gone much wider. 245 in the front and 265 in the back.

ballajb
04-12-2010, 11:41 AM
the shop was saying that wider than 225 would especially since i am goin to be lowering the car. in the rear, if i lower 2 inches the 225 is just right where i wont have my fender cutting into the tire

ballajb
04-12-2010, 11:41 AM
i will probably be burning up those rear pretty fast, and when i do maybe i will try 235 n see how that goes

Bryce
04-12-2010, 01:23 PM
just to give you an idea. I have 245s on all four corners of the 65 mustang. and a 265 drag slick in the back for track days.

ballajb
04-12-2010, 01:31 PM
i think i might just have to see about that 245s cause if i can go wider i would like that

With 4 1/2 backspacing you will have trouble if you lower it too much... a 5 inch backspace 18x8 would be perfect on a 66 with stock width rearend..

streetrods
04-15-2010, 07:57 PM
Here is a 66 I did a few years back with a 17/18 combo... the rears were 18x8 with 4.5 backspace...tires were 245 35 18s... however I put a maverick rear in it which is a little narrower..and when I put 1/4 skins on it I pulled them out about 1/4 inch each side... so there is no way you could put 4.5 bs wheels on a stock 66 mustang and drop it like this one..

And here is a 66 I lowered this week.... it has a stock 66 rear end... the wheels in back are 18x8 with a 4.75 backspacing....tires are 245 40 18s.... It is a very tight fit to the outside... had to grind the 1/4 panel lip some.... a 5 or 5.25 backspace wheel would make it easier...

You can lower some with a 4.5 bs but you will not be able to tuck tire like mine with that... I'm having enough trouble with a 4.75 bs

Cannon
04-16-2010, 05:07 PM
just mini-tub it, a 245 is weak! I would go with no bigger than a 17" too cause not only are tire choices much better, but prices are way cheaper in a 17".

That tire/wheel size combo made me throw up in my mouth a little. 17/20 looks like ass on 85% of applications.

I would do a 17/18 or 18/19 on yours if you want a stagger

streetrods

18" tires are not that much more than 17s... I can get 285 30 18's for $3 more per tire than a 275 40 17....

Hey there streetrods, I apologize for the unsolicited email, but I was hoping to ask you questions about your vehicle build.

Let me start w/ some background. I bought my 1966 Mustang coupe in 1998 while serving onboard the USS Caron, stationed in Virginia Beach, VA. The car was pretty bare bones, the engine not so great and tons of rust. Over the years I have invested a bit of funds into getting the motor and sheet metal to a solid state. Now it's time for some serious changes / upgrades to the suspension, brakes, wheels and tires.

I saw a photo of your 1966 coupe that you had recently lowered. This is the same year and color of my car and I would very much like to mimic the stance and wheels of your car.

So my questions, may seem redundant, but I am trying to cover all bases and build this car w/o breaking the bank and more importantly without making purchases that may later prove to not fit with parts on the car now...that's my big fear.

So, let the questions begin:
1. How do you like the staggered look and do you feel 18" tires in the front are too much?
2. What brand and model # front shocks are you using?
3. What brand and model # rear shocks are you using?
4. Are you running stock rear leaf springs? If not, what are you using?
5. Are you still using stock brakes? Are they drum? If not, what brand of aftermarket brakes do you use and what are the model or kit #s ?
6. Did you upgrade the master cylinder? to what?
7. I am very much going to use the same tire and wheel combo, but am concerned that it won't fit on a stock drum brake setup....thoughts?
8. Did you make any mods to the rear diff or axle?
9. Anything you would do differently now that you've gone through a build out?

I really appreciate your (and anyone else's) help guiding me through my 66 build out.

Mr. Din

I tried running 18x10 w/295 tire but it rubbed too much at this ride height.

That looks awesome...you obviously been hacking and cutting on your car?

Yes sir, check out my project thread. I have always loved your car btw.

These all look great, does anyone know what cut stock coils with supposedly 4" drop look like? Thanks thinkin about putting it on my car on a '66 hardtop with anywhere from 14" rims to 18in.....

I have a "66 Mustang that I had planned to put 18x8 with a 4.75" b.s. in the rear but I would like to go wider. I don't mind mini tubbing it but at what point will the rear leaf springs interfere?

The tubs can only be moved in about 2" before you hit the frame and need to relocate the leaf springs.

So I narrowed the frame

So it looks like you welded in some square stock and then cut out the frame rail section. Did you re-weld the mini tubs to the new frame rail section and relocate the leaf spring hanger brackets to the new frame rail section? Was there any issues? Are you using the OEM 8" rear? This looks like the route I want to take without spending a pretty penny on a 4 link at this time. Should I be looking into a different rear end as well?

I should have read your build thread before responding so quickly. The expoder 8.8" is a good idea. I should lean this way as well as they are a dime a dozen. I have gone back and forth with what I want to do with this car whether to get it going as far as paint and interior and slap some nice wheels on it since I am the type that wants it now but I think ultimately I won't be satisfied. I will be watching your build thread closely and may be picking your brain in the near future.

Sounds good. It's slow going now because of school but I'll try to get some work done to it before too long. Right now I'm waiting to order wheels, so that I can narrow the rear end, so I can start hanging sheet metal again. It's a viscous cycle.

That is going to look sick when you get it done. I just bought the mini tubs for mine and the TCP G-link with the offset lower arms for mine. I plan on doing the install soon. Hoping to run an 11.5inch wheel on a 68 coupe with a 315/35/17.

Thanks, the 68 should eat up the 315's better than the early cars. These cars are sooo small.

Pffff, too small? Nothing some cutt'n and weld'n can't solve. I crammed 315's under a 65 Falcon, make it happen! :nopity:

Yup, I'll be fitting wheel tubs today if I can stop finding stuff that needs repaired first. Like the numerous brackets that were left unwelded or the fact that my passenger outer wheel tub was only braised in two locations. It's the tidy work that eats up my time.

Great looking black coupe! The 10 inch wheel looks so good under that car. Below is a picture of my set up. 18x7's w/235's up front and 18x10's w/295's out back. No mini tubs.

Would you do the 235's on a 7" rim again? Just got in my Boze Lateral G's for my '66 coupe 18x10.5 and 17x7.

I would. No issues and the car handles great. I have rubbed a couple of times under hard braking/cornering but keep in mind my car is a 67.

I found this post from a web search and was interested in learning how the OP lowered this white 66? I sent him a PM and haven't gotten a reply..

I'm also curious if it is drive-able at this height or is in bagged.

Does anyone have any background or experience getting a 65-66 this low?

Thanks.... really nice cars.

My 66 was originally Saturine .... The other car you posted makes me think seriously of going back to that color!

How drive-able was the white car. I'm going to guess the rear has 2" drop leaf springs and a 1"block with a C notch ?

Thanks! maybe you can make me a set of wheels I can borrow for the 66 I'm working on now?? ; ) I have mini tubs in it so a 19x10 and 18x7 setup would be awesome!

Did you ever put 19X10' wheels on this new build. I know it's been a lot of years.
