Hey everyone this is my first post on here and I am looking for info on upgrading the handling of my car. I am currently installing a twin turbo set up on it and i have already upgraded my brakes so now its time for the steering and handling to improve. I was wanting to put a rack and pinion setup on it but the conversion kits are ridiculously high. I was wondering if anyone out there has just bout a rear steer rack and made it work. if so what kind did you use and what all did you have to do? thanks for any help. i guess it would help if I stated I have a 67 camaro lol

I dont think u will have a problem finding a rack n pinion unit for the car, but if u dont buy a bolt on set up your challenge will be fabricating a mount for the rack.

Some have found issues even with the "good" boltup units. You are further adding to packaging constraints with a TT setup. I would do a DSE or LEE Steering box. R&P fell, in factory style packaging, and for a lot less than an R&P too.

Yeah I have been looking at some steering boxes and I noticed CPP has a new one out. Have any of you guys tried this or know anything about it? I think I will steer clear of the rack and find a good performance box.

I just upgraded steering by having my old steering box rebuilt and I came out of the deal fairly cheap. I spent $325 for a fast-ratio (12:1) box upgrade and the steering now has a modern (heavy) feel to it rather than the 1 finger steering, and I don't have to turn the wheel 6 times to go around a corner!

I am using a bolt on unit and love it, some guys have had bump steer issues but I haven't had that problem, works really well on the track plus I probably Knocked 20lbs off my car.

So the stock unit is 14:1? and i am looking for a 12:1 ratio for modern steering? I weent on ebay but everything I noticed on there is all front mount stuff. I have been looking at the new CPP box and it guarantees a rack like feel has anyone tried it?

My whole front end is rebuilt new with all Hotchkis parts other than the steering box and since i am nearly done ith the twin turbo setup I want to upgrade the steering but i want to do it right the first time.

I think I am going to convert over to a front mount rack. My fabricator is going to do this. It seems that the steering rod will go through the frame and attach to the rack. I will order some steering arm adapters from chassis engineering and from what i understand this will be better than the rear mount bolt up kits offered on the market.

I've got a Steeroids R&P bolt on kit on my '67 Firebird. What I don't like about it is that the rack is the lowest point of the car, at my ride height its only about 2" from the road. It really takes a lot of the fun out of driving it, every little dip in the road needs to be driven over with caution.
DButler above is talking about converting to a front mount rack - this perks my interest. Has anyone done this yet? I might take on the project this summer. I'm thinking doing a setup similar to the Heidt's subframe with R&P front mount:

Holy crap! How high is the rear leg of the subframe?

I've had that set up on my car for 8 years now and am pretty low also, not sure it's 2 inches but I have about 23 1/2" to lip of fender from ground with 17" wheels and I have never had a problem. It could be your coil spring rates. I'm using 650 lb but cut a coil off and was told would make 10% addition to spring rate.
I really like mine for several reasons but mainly due to never feeling any bumpsteer issues.
