I am doing some research into the pre-qualification at Road America for my brother in law. He has a modified AMG CLK63 Black Series that has spent a fair amount of time on dragstrips and Willow Springs. The car makes upwards of 600hp and has run as quick at 11.04 in the quarter. With nothing other than a tire change, it went to Willow and was claimed to be faster than new 911 turbos. After watching the 2009 competition on the speed channel, I noticed a 4 door AMG and a Bentley twin turbo in the mix. However, the two cars were not shown again or how they placed. I didn't think much of it and just assumed the owners wanted to get their 15 seconds in without pushing their cars too hard until I went on the Optima site and noticed the cars were not even listed as competitors for 2009. What's up with that?
I guess the bottom line question I have is do imported cars that meet the rules really have a chance to win or is this pretty much limited to pro-touring domestic cars? Or is the coverage more of a marketing thing regardless of where the cars end up placing.
Also, when is the deadline for submitting pre-registration forms?
