Rolled it out in the sun for the first time since last summer. All the mods to get these things to fit are finally done. RacingHart M5, 18x9 in front, and 18x10 in the back. One of two in the world with wheels this big on a Corvair.

Note: the rear bumper is off, and the lower engine shroud is missing in the rear angle shot up there. It'll look cooler with all that jazz on there. Im replacing that quarter panel rust and had to pull the bumper and junk.
Been busy.

Hey Tony,
Those wheels look sweet!! :1st:
I would have never thought 9" and 10" wide rims would have fit under the Corvair's stock sheetmetal!
VERY NICE!!! :yum:

I would love to tell you. Its a "Holey Ball" from www.billetballs.com that my wife got me for my birthday. (How cool is SHE?) It costs 80 bucks, and they are great people to buy from. Good service great quality and fast shipping. I highly recommend them, obviously.

I keep the stocker in my glove compartment for just this reason. People kept asking me what the TSRUH branding on my hand meant.

Tony, thanks so much for the info on that shifter knob. I think its too cool. Your wife is awesome!!! I don't think I could get a black one, living in Texas.

03-12-2010, 11:55 AM
I LOVE my shift knob. It is without question, the coolest thing about my car to me. You could probably pull off a black one, just make sure to keep it covered in the sun when you aren't driving. Otherwise, you'll baconate your hand.
Oh, and you'll be SHOCKED how light these things are.

:lmao: Oh yeah! I had one of those in my '66 Beaumont ..... convertible. It's amazing how hot they can get with the top down on a sunny day. Then there's the winter. Never mind getting your tongue stuck to a post, imagine what it's like to have your hand stuck to a shifter. Luckily it would only take a couple of minutes to warm up the handle enough to release your hand.
I definitely want one of those wiffle knobs.

That thing has to be wicked in the corners now.
You need to get a Gtech pro from someone and check the G force in the corners. I'm gonna bet you go over 1g with no problem.
Get those brakes done so you can stop as good as the tires can.
I would fix the body but I just can't see your car being any more cool than it is with paint. I would spend every dime that you think you want to spend on paint and get the EFI setup for it after the brakes.

We were looking at turboing it today. We've got a turbo laying around, and a four barrel manifold. I may just go nuts and try to fab something up. This guy made a "draw though" system that worked. and the car acutally ran 13 second quarter miles, went 156 mph at Bonniville, and was a scream on the track, (this article is from 1968, so you KNOW technology will make a BIG difference)
my turbo is bigger, more efficiant, and there's better "water/ethonol" injection systems now. Not to mention TBI setups.
I do not approve of the muffler in the engine compartment. I don't know what that's about...

Quite some time ago, I saw a Corvair at a local show. He also had a draw through turbo system, but the turbo was right on top of the engine resulting in an even shorter intake tract. The owner said he had some help setting up the holley, but the result was no noticeable turbo lag. Meth injection was next on his list.
