Over 4 years ago I started with this car with the intention of doing some upgrades and keeping it somewhat stock looking - i have since learned that it is way too much fun to throw it around corners so now anything goes

Figured I'd start posting some of the upgrades as I work on improvements to my summer daily driver. I picked up Grace in Aug 08 -- This is proabaly the only time you'll see her on a trailer - I drove 7 1/2 hours away to pick her up.
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36722&stc=1&d=1268196806

She sat a bit high in the rear and the tires were a bit skinny and sunk into the wheel wells....
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36723&stc=1&d=1268196806

So she was lowered and BFG's were added....
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36724&stc=1&d=1268196806

As you can see both my son and daughter love the car and we go for ice cream all the time but my favorite part is when the kids say "hit the gas" (usually at the top of their lungs).

Plans are to drive the car as much as I can while upgrading a little bit of everything and getting the car to the mechanical condition I want then a winter's worth of body and paint most likely 3-4 years from now.

Looks good Don.

I like the name.

I left the name up to the kids -- my daughter's middle name is Grace and it fits - my goal is for the car to look like it could have rolled off the line in 67 but have the :machine: to kick some tail and handle the turns.

Made the trip back to NY from Ohio with a pick-up of goodies including the disc breaks, an engine hoist on loan (thanks bro), some misc engine parts and ......

wait for it.......
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36730&stc=1&d=1268229592

Grace's new power plant, a 350 4bolt .040 over (.030 wasn't clean enough), JE Forged Pistons and a stock 400 crank so with the new 72cc heads I should be around a nice street-able 9.6:1 compression
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36731&stc=1&d=1268229592

The plan is a top end kit from TrickFlow that is designed to produce 490hp and 440ft/lbs on a 383 - - between this and upgrading the 2.80 gear that is in the 12 bolt with a 4.10, I'm expecting she'll be a bit more fun around town. :smoke:

OK - I know it's fluff but I was itching to do something to the car and I'm in the middle of a move to a new place with a 2 1/2 car garage so I can't take on anything to big until I'm in the new place. New LED lights went in....

Before they went in ...
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36916&stc=1&d=1269010067

My son hard at work... (once he knew how to undo the bolts he wouldn't let me help anymore)
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36920&stc=1&d=1269010171

Kit had a really clean install - It's designed to just bolt in and plug into the factory pig tails but I grabbed the heat gun and shrink tubes and hard wired it.
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36918&stc=1&d=1269010171

I liked this kit because it didn't have 1 million LEDs and still looks like it might have been factory until you hit the turn signal or breaks
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36919&stc=1&d=1269010171

Good news is I move into the new place this week and after unpacking I'll be able to pull the 12 bolt out. It's getting upgraded to a 4.10 posi (currently a 2.80) and disc breaks!

Finally moved into the new place and unpacked (mostly) and it's time for some real work to be done....

Rear end is completely out of the car now
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37246&stc=1&d=1270344655

this is the crappy "custom" exhaust i had a local shop put in -it's on its way out - going to dump after the flomasters for now - you can also see where the rear end was leaking (soon to be fixed)
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37247&stc=1&d=1270344655

updates for the rear include a new set of richmond 4.10's an auburn posi diff, new energy poly and a disc break conversion
I Love new parts
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37248&stc=1&d=1270344655

all apart and ready to be blasted and have the old traction bar bracket removed as well as a little paint before re-install
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37249&stc=1&d=1270344655

and final job of the day was a test fit of the rear breaks before a little paint -- i know it's not a big break conversion but i still like the looks of my 15" ralleys and for the mostly street and limited joy rides around a road course these will do
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37250&stc=1&d=1270344655

more to come.....

fairly productive day off with decent weather to get a few more things ready - calipers received paint
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37341&stc=1&d=1270772101

after letting the rear housing soak in "peal away 6" to remove the undercoating I removed the old bracket for the factory traction bar
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37342&stc=1&d=1270772101

added some primer
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37343&stc=1&d=1270772303

and painted the pumpkin in cast - the ends will get black before final assembly
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37344&stc=1&d=1270772303

the next step is to get the old bushing out of the leafs so i can install the new poly -- i hit this %&#$@&!! with everything and tried several pulley puller combinations to get it out with no luck - asked one of my friends today at the dealership and he said we could just use a press or burn it out (i'll let him press them out)
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37345&stc=1&d=1270772441

with any luck i'll find some more time this week to get the axle tubes painted and the suspension items taken care of so next wednesday i can take my time and get the new gears set up - with any luck she'll be back on the road in a week. I can't wait -- going from 2.80 to a 4.10 should really help her out from light to light:yum:

Don, I too love the look of Rally wheels on these cars. If you ever decide you want to bump up in size on your wheels but still want the look of the Rally, there is a company called 'Wheel Vintques' that makes a 17" Billet Rally wheel. They leave the outer hoop polished and powdercoat the centers. It also excepts a stock center cap so you can continue to have the look of the original rally wheels but in a 17" size. FYI.

Nice project. You're actually doing it the right way (a little at a time here and there).

thanks for the encouragement everyone

suggestions or thoughts..... before i put everything back in i'm wondering if it would be worth upgrading the KYB2 shocks that are currently in the car? i figure if i should this would be the time to do it.

not a lot of progress - mostly fighting with old car and new parts but i did get the rear ready for assembly - wednesday should be very productive with install of new gears, diff, breaks ect as i have all my little ducks in a row - hopefully they're not lined up in a shooting gallery :machine:

Yipee!!!

The gears are in - The gears are in - it was a long day but I feel like I got something done!!

Started off the day undercoating the back 1/2 of the underside, it was already done once so i figue this was a good time for cleaning it up a little seeing how i was under there and had most of the stuff out of the way.

Did I mention the gears are in? - i'm excited for me if you can't tell 1) i finally have a garage big enough to work in and 2) she's finally getting the much needed upgrade from the 2.80's that were out back and 3)no more drum brakes!!
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37454&stc=1&d=1271290250

And if I do say so myself, I did a pretty good job for my 1st rear gear install ever - - great contact - - (according to the textbook) :jump:
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37455&stc=1&d=1271290250

and was able to get the axels and brakes done...
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37456&stc=1&d=1271290250

Only bummer is that I tossed the old cover bolts because i thought i had new ones in the install kit - i'll be ordering new ones tonight and hopefully have them friday so i can get this back in the car and go for a ride this weekend.

still not sure if i should change out the old shocks while i'm at it - - any thoughts???

or suggestions...

thanks

Great Camaro project going on..replace those old shocks..there are many great brands to choose from..I personally would go on to this for your 67 if you wanted a little more than just the replacement shocks...just a thought!

I thought of that last night when i went to bed - for some reason i was a little too focused on not being able to finish it (one of those "hey stupid" moments) stop by my local Secor Lumber (they have a GREAT selection of bolts if anyone has one close to them stop in) and picked up some stainless steel with washers for a total of $7.53 with tax

Great options Jim - I'll probably move more towards this direction on my 1st streetfighter project which will be a 2nd gen bird but that's a ways out though. up next I have a hankering for a 4dr Chevelle or Nova that will be my year round driver - something all black comes to mind.:bsjerk:

Friday was a BEAUTIFUL day!!

Grace is back on the road and the rear end is broken in -- what a difference in personality a new set of gears and some poly bushings can make! I must have laughed for 10 minutes straight the 1st time i punched it -- she broke loose and left rubber all over the road, broke a little when she hit 2nd and then even chirped in 3rd -- holly cow what a difference - in fact i have a huge smile on my face just thinking about it.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/04/IMAG0077-1.jpg?t=1272119235

I even had enough time to take care of my next project on the car - a little upgrade on the tunes..
In keeping with the "look as stock as possible" i put a original looking head unit in with an aux port
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/04/DSC02366-1.jpg?t=1272119852

added a set of polk audio 6x9's using the old grills so it still looks factory
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/04/DSC02362-1.jpg?t=1272120238

and an amp that i attached to the rear deck lid so when you open the trunk you can't see any of it without bending over and sticking your head in the trunk
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/04/DSC02359-1.jpg?t=1272120271

I don't have any - in 67 a RS would have had reverse lights mounted under the bumper - in NY the way the inspection process works if the car is a certain age it doesn't need them so i didn't add them back - the only time i go backwards is to back into a parking space. You could get a set of rs back-up lights and mount them below the bumper if you wanted or needed to have back-up lights

I love driving her and try to keep it on the road as much as possible during the nice months in NY - as far as the wheels go - I really like the looks of the old rally wheels with the BF Goodrich raised white letters especially with one of my main goals being to keep the car looking like it could be stock. the down side is the next major upgrade will most likely force me to do something.

Grace's new power plant on the stand now coming to an engine bay near me soon....

a 350 bored 40 over stroked with a 400 crank and some forged pistons - after the trick flow heads, cam and top end build it should be putting out 510+ hp at the flywheel so my tires are going to need to be upgraded. I'm leaning towards a set of 16 or 17" torq trust d's with some stickier rubber maybe a drag radial or something similar to help put all the power to the road??? I was thinking maybe just going to a drag radial on the rally's but if I'm loosing the white letters I figure it may make sense to upgrade the wheels????? As you can tell I'm really not sure what to do yet and I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any...:dunno:

Thank you all for the complements

My top 3 favorite things about having an old muscle car are:
-Pounding on it
-Wrenching on it so I can pound on it some more or because I've been pounding on it
-Knowing that others are somehow enjoying the car - either by getting a complement or letting someone else get behind the wheel and seeing the same big goofy grin on their face when they start it up that I get when I'm driving it

Yesterday I started on the next step in Grace's development - her new motor (I've waited a long time to get started on this part). It was slow at work on Saturday so I ordered the top end parts and when I got home started getting the block ready.

After removing all the paint and some prep work I put a few coats of primer
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/DSC02370-1.jpg?t=1273437770

A little sanding and ten a few coats of classic Chevrolet Orange engine paint....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/DSC02372-1.jpg?t=1273438637

Today, after a good night of drying, I removed all the tape and cleaned out all of the threads with a thread chaser and cleaned up the deck a little -- took a little time but now it is ready for some assembly once the parts come in.

According to my calculations it should be somewhere north of 450hp and if all goes well my brother will be in town in June to help me swap the motors out.

oh man, Thats the way to go. why didn't I think of that!! I was planning on pulling the motor after the suspension was done to rebuild it, but now I think I'm gonna do the same as you and build a second motor, then do a swap when its done, that way I can drive her when the suspensions done. I've got a 350 4 bolt main block thats been sitting in my aunt's garage collecting surface rust for quite a few years. only problem is I don't have any of the stock internal parts. I'm learning alot by following your thread don.

Thanks guys ---

Wednesday was a somewhat productive day, in order to save money for parts that will help the car go faster I grinded, sanded and painted the old oil pan, timing cover and ballancer as well as the new thermostat neck (why spend $$ on chrome when black looks just as good).

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/painted-1.jpg?t=1273848278

I also picked up my drive shaft from the shop after realizing I had a significant vibration after changing out the old gears in the rear. I can't wait to get that back in tonight as the weather should be good saturday:)

I give an A+ to the guys at Fleet Pride in Rochester NY - easy to talk to and very helpful - also very fair on pricing and it didn't hurt to get the drive shaft back the next day either!

Also I had some parts come in yesterday:yum:

Tonight the drive shaft goes in and I start the engine assembly although i need to wait until the end of the month for the Brodix heads to arrive in order to finish the job :pat:

If you change the wheels to a larger size, I'd vote for the vintage wheels in a size 17. Seeing that you want to still lower the car a bit without changing the leaf perches, you can just have the springs dearched.

Word of advise with the repo wheels. Consider buying new center caps and trim rings as every set I've messed with were not compatable with the stock trim.

oh man, That's the way to go. why didn't I think of that!! I was planning on pulling the motor after the suspension was done to rebuild it, but now I think I'm gonna do the same as you and build a second motor, then do a swap when its done, that way I can drive her when the suspensions done. I've got a 350 4 bolt main block that's been sitting in my aunt's garage collecting surface rust for quite a few years. only problem is I don't have any of the stock internal parts. I'm learning a lot by following your thread don.

And yes, I'm keeping a small block chevy in my pontiac, LOL

Nice thing about doing it this way is that i can list the current block on craigslist and hopeful get more ca$h and a quicker sale because buyers can see it run before i pull it.

And keeping a sbc is a GREAT idea (i'm a little bias) but in reality it is supper easy and inexpensive to have a lot of fun with a small block -- all in I will prob have around $2800 in my motor and will be pushing over 450hp -- $6/hp doesn't seam like a bad deal to me - I can't imagine what some guys are spending on power plants:bsjerk:

I'm having a hard time finding a lot of beauty in the old rally's when they are stretched out to the 17" - the 16's are pushing it -- the geometry of it all i think messes with me -- the exception is when guys go nuts to the 19's all polished out and tucked up like Scott is doing with his 67 NASCAR - it should be called a NASTYCAR - this car is SICK
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/Camaro22-1.jpg

I'm leaning towards the 17" American Racing Torq Trust wheels -- gunmetal spokes and a polished lip -- still gives the classic look to keep it somewhat a sleeper :)

Motor looks good....I usually paint all of mine black, no real reason other than I like them that color...painting the tins is the way to go...some of those chrome, shiny tins are stamped out of something too thin and don't always seal up the motor real good, so the gaskets weep.

The rear is finished -- put the drive shaft in this week and gave Grace a tune-up yesterday. Vibration is gone and the 4.10's have waken up a beast - - wow what a diffrence -this is what she left behind during our little stroll....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/burn-1.jpg?t=1274361777

There would have been more but the darn thing poped out of gear - - next step is adjusting the linkage so that doesn't happen anymore.

Also drove her to work today and stopped at the auto parts store for some paint and when i came back out she didn't want to start -- starter is on the way out -- hopefully it makes it a little longer as the new motor is soooo close to being done

John - I just checked out your ride on NastyZ28 -- very nice I love the 70 - how is the break portpoting valve below the frount seat working out for you? does it come in as handy as you thought it might?

Props to the guys form Nasty Z28 - I ran into some guys last year at the Camaro Nationals at Carlise -- Great group - they let me borrow some tools when the window fell out of my car at the show - good thing it rained almost all the way home that day!

Yeah I have to say that the group that shows up for Carlise each year is a pretty good group of folks. I met most of them for the first time in person in 2008 when my son and I attended.

Prop valve...not sure just yet...car isn't on the road. Side tracked with a garage project so that I will have somewhere out of the weather to work on it.

Well today was bitter sweet or should I say sweet then bitter....

Ended up with some spare time today so i did my final pre-assembly work by checking clearances and cam degree and on to final assembly of the motor and all was going well....
Cam and double roller timing chain installed,
and on to the heads...... 1st side done,
then as i'm running through the final torq pass on the passenger side head..... KABOOM - a poor repair job reared it's ugly head....

it seams as though someone repaired the top of the threads and left the bottom 1/2 of the original threads, when my new bolt hit the original threads and didn't line up it forced the repair up and out of the block -- oh well -- better to find out now then after she's in....

now wednesday has a whole new agenda planned......

Tis the season....

So after a fun summer driving the Camaro around and thinking about what to do with the bad bolt in the block that I was building, I have decided to pull the current motor and it heads off to the machine shop early in January. So out with the old....

This has been a great running motor but it is a little tired after starting life in a pick-up and being transplanted into Grace without any attention....

Finished stripping down the block and loaded up the truck and off to the machine shop --- FYI The guys over there are great if you need anything in the Finger Lakes area of NY - http://grammargates.com/

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/DSC03299-1.jpg?t=1294261271

While the engine is off getting work I re-did the carb with the new 750 body...

It was like hitting the staples "Easy Button" simple kit with new valves and gaskets and it was quick!

Now on to my next step, I love the old school Moroso valve covers but they are a little old so I'll be refinishing them next, I'm torn between bringing them back to like new natural finish or chevy orange to match the block and then taking the paint off the fins and logo to make them stand out...

I also had time to get the valve covers primed and painted.

next step is to block off the top to show the fins and moroso and them some clear - they should clean up nice and not be too fancy for the old girl

next week the rear suspension upgrades (QA1's to match the front and some traction bars)and finishing off the valve covers.

is it almost summer yet??

Here we go -- motor is back in (almost - still have a bunch of connecting to do)

Hook-ups, Headers and exhaust will all begin tonight after work and I have another big block of time on Saturday to hopefully get a bunch done -- if all goes well next week at this time I'll have it in the parking lot at work.

Not sure the hurry I'm in though - there is snow like substance falling from the sky again today in glorious Rochester NY!! I can't wait to retire south.

Left to do:

Gauges
Fan (temp putting the old fan back in - electric fans will have to be another day - I can't wait to be driving again)
Exhaust

I hope all goes well on Wednesday - weather outlook is sunny to partly sunny for the rest of the week!

Thanks - this it's been a lot of fun - most of the 'mini projects' have went well and the car hasn't missed much road time -- this engine was a little more time consuming than I thought it was going to be mainly due to a hold up at the machine shop. This is the longest it's been off the road - thankfully the Rochester winter lasted longer than usual so I haven't missed driving as much as normal.

Looks great. I love the valve covers. Hope to hear it run soon and I hope that magic helicoil was worth the $$!

Thanks - i scratched the crap out of the driver side when I put the motor back in - the new heads are a little taller than the old ones and I didn't notice until it was too late -- thankfully I think my plug wires will cover most of the damage.

"magic helicoil" better hold up - ha ha - so disappointing but that is life sometimes.

My ex was a big hater of the car - hmmmm not sure why??? Was it the buying it on our anniversary? or perhaps that I wasn't home for her birthday because I drove 14 hours to go get it? Funny how all that works out in the end. :)

I will most likely need to drive without the hood for a little bit as the new intake is taller than the old and I was hoping to keep the stock flat hood as you don't see to many like it anymore.

Just like everyday life there is good news and bad news.....

Good news is I was able to get the hood on and it does barley fit!! I'm so happy I get to keep the hood. I even took a short drive in the Camaro yesterday!! It still needs a good tune from someone who really knows what they are doing to get the most out of it but I had some bad news/luck as well. 1) there is a oil leak from the oil pan so that will be a pain 2) there was a little wobble (really had to look for it) with the harmonic ballancer, after some research and conversation with an experianced engine builder I learned I had a balancer for a 350 not a 400 and that might cause the issue so I have a new ballancer for the front and some more work to do before she is on the road again.

Also I need so input if anyone who knows anything is reading.... The brakes are soft - nothing changed except the motor -- I will re-bleed them friday night but would the new motor set-up affect the braking system (i've heard about booster issues with some big cams but I really didn't think I would fall into that group???) -- please help if you can -- Don

and yes I had to take a ride even with soft brakes (I love living in the country!)

Nice work Don! Do you have any specs on the new engine? Sounds pretty healthy for sure.

Thanks for asking - I wanted a motor to run on pump gas and be very street-able for daily driving so here is what i did...

350 4 bolt - .40 bore with JE forged flat top pistons stroked with a 400 crank

Brodix Aluminum Heads 70 cc chamber - 200cc intake runner - 2.020 in intake valve with a 1.600 exhaust - max lift .575 in

Lunati Cam and Lifters, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Duration 268/276, Lift .489/.504, -(designed to excel between 1,600 - 6,200 RPM)

Summit 1.5 ratio Aluminum Roller Rockers

Trickflow 7.850" Chromemoly Pushrods

Edelbrock Performer RPM AirGap Intake

I re-built my Holley 650 double pump with a Holley 750 retro fit package

HEI distributer with the Acel cap and super coil - - also using the E3 plugs (we'll see if it all works out to be enough spark)

I used a Mildon high volume oil pump, an Edelbrock 110gph fuel pump, a double roller timing chain and an ARP bolt kit to finish things off although I will never use an ARP Bolt kit again - what a waste of $$$ I have extra bolts everywhere and some of the ARP's were the wrong size so they are worthless now.

If I did my math and research correctly I'm figuring around 450hp and 420ft/lb -and best of all a fairly flat hp/tq curve (i'm hoping)- we'll see as it all means s@*%t until it's put to the ground , I know I could've went much more aggressive on the cam but I wanted a daily driver and this set up should be more than enough seeing how I have it pared with an automatic overdrive and 4.10's in the back

05-16-2011, 10:30 AM
4.10 isn't too bad really - i replaced 2.80 (have no clue why anyone would have even thought of making a 2.80 posi rear set-up)
with the over drive gear in the 700r4 the torque converter never even locked up until i hit 73 mph!! now with the 4.10's I'm only turning 2600 rpm at 70 mph - - so it's still pretty reasonable -- i can't imagine how anyone drives around with 4.10's and a TH350 or TH400 or a 4spd -- has to be deafening at highway speeds

rfalker1

So my 1 day a week to work on the Camaro went good and bad -- ugh is it frustrating at times building a car....

Breaks are done and she is drivable but at the end of the drive she started acting up - result a charging issue to chase down - perhaps a result of re-locating the battery to the trunk?? Plus I noticed I still have a pan leak - grrrr -- about to coat the SH*# out of it with RTV Black - I hate the thought of pulling that motor back up again.

She did get a bath in-between the rain and everything else yesterday - at least she looks pretty.

and sounds mean...

Ok then after replacing the oil pan gasket 2 times I still had a leak, after further investigation the timing chain cover was leaking at the joint where the oil pan meets so one last teardown and resealed oil pan, timing chain, water pump and harmonic balancer seal -- GREAT NEWS -- NO LEAKS!!!! So yesterday was the 1st day she has been driven more than a mile since last fall.

Bonus, yesterday was my son's birthday party and you should have seen all the running to the car as I pulled in. - The picture below is exactly why I enjoy this car so much!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/06/426d2ce1-1.jpg?t=1346027462

And today was the first day I was able to drive it to work -- I still have some timing issues and some possible carb tuning so if anyone in Rochester NY knows what they are doing and can lend some expertise..

Thanks for the compliment as that was the plan - look stock - drive crazy!

Handles pretty good, upgraded to disc all around, 1 3/4" anti-roll bar upfront, added one to rear and 2" drop spindle up front and QA1 adjustable -- up next is dropping the rear 1 1/2" adding the QA1's to match the front and I have a set of adjustable J traction bars -- it should do very well without throwing a ton of ca$h at it.

OUCH!!!

Well after enjoying most of the summer and putting on a few thousand miles including a couple of drives to Buffalo -- KABOOM 2 miles from my house.......

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/photo-1.jpg?t=1346027462

I am curious what would cause such a thing and I am upset over the fact that I paid a machine shop to do the entire bottom end of the motor to avoid such an occurrence so my question is - How do I handle this and is the machine shop responsible? Do I need to disassemble to find cause or should I take it to the shop that did the work? I wasn't pleased with the machine shop to begin with but if they are responsible I want to hold them to it. -- any suggestions??

OMG sorry to hear that!!, Does your the work the machine shop did have a warranty or guarantee? because if not it would be hard to get your money back. However you can always hold them responsible, but it does not mean it will get you anywhere far, if there is no true guarantee.
However I hope it works out for you, what exactly happened to it to cause this catastrophe?

They also sell blocks on summit, saw a 383 block for $700, so if you didn't destroy all the internals of the engine you might be able to get a new block and swap parts, all the good ones atleast and make sure you call the machine shop

Update....
Life has been a little crazy so needless to say I haven't had the time to do anything with the giant paperweight my motor has turned into. This Christmas Eve I spent the day starting to remove the old motor with my girl and the 2nd half of the day celebrating the fact she said she'd marry me. Ironic how last Christmas I spent the day pulling the same block from the car when it was running perfect just so I could make it better and the crank seams to be broken off completely and is off center, looks like when it broke it hit something hard as the pulley has a big dent in it and when i try to rotate the motor it spins way too easy

I have a friend coming over on Monday then we'll pull the motor and tranny to see just how bad things are. I am hoping the top end is all good and if I'm really lucky the cam and pistons are ok -- either way we will see and she will be back on the road for the spring.

Motor is OUT and it seams to me to be a clear case of machine shop error - please correct me if I'm not right.........

after removing the pan found crank broken in 1/2 and a bolt missing from the #1 piston connecting rod at the crank - a result of over or under torq to the bolt I assume clearly bolt missing while engine was still rotating

For the threads of the con-rod bolt to have been buggered up like that...I'd venture to say that bolt fell out and got punted around and found a secure place to lodge while the motor was spinning, thus breaking the crank. Was the con-rod nut in the bottom of the pan without any marks on it?...suggesting that it fell off before all of this other subsequent destruction.

Dons67

Found bits and pieces of the nut in the bottom of the pan completely destroyed (biggest piece wasn't even a full side of the bolt)

I just found this thread... Really enjoyed it until the engine break. Really sucks and unfortunate. I once had an engine break in 10 minutes ( dropped a valve; broke a rod and cracked the block, so I know the feeling you must be going through. Not sure you will be able to recover anything from the machine shop... Since it sounds to me that the engine was not balanced with the balancer you had on it. I assume it was internally balanced, correct? I just think they can argue that it's not their fault...

What a stressful few months -- long story short the machine shop is taking no responsibility for the work that was done and it looks like I'm out a motor. I had the heads checked and 2 bent valves and 5 guides need to be replaced -- ugh
so here is my problem - I just dumped a good amount of cash in a motor last year and now I need to start over so I have 2 options and I'm looking for opinions as to which way to go......

Option # 1 -- 355 putting out 420+ hp

Option # 2 -- do another 383 with a little more hp and a lot more low end torque

-- I know if money was no big deal which way I would go but it's $1,000 swing when I'm on a tight budget, remember the car has 4.10's and a 700r4 so there is a very short 1st gear - If I was running a TH350, TH400 or 4-speed I know there would be a big difference but would I really notice a huge difference between the 2 set-ups with my transmission and rear end?

Looking for any opinions and feedback before I pull the trigger!!

Thanks,
Don

UPDATE:

A fresh motor is being built by the guys at Farmers Automotive (http://www.farmerautomotive.com/) - Dan is very insightful and was a huge help. We decided to rebuild my heads and a fresh 355 with a good amount of HP and a fair amount of torque - with the 4.10's and low 2004R 1st & 2nd I should be in great shape around town and on the highway.

Had the local body shop re-do the valve covers as I scratched the crap out of them when installing the motor last time around so this is all I got right now.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/e553f3ec-1.jpg?t=1346027459

Next on the list is cleaning up the tranny, do some wiring (including the electric fans) before the new motor goes in and putting a dent in the firewall so the distributor doesn't hit anymore.(I took a hammer to it last year and this is my chance to clean it up before the new motor goes back in.)

Your 383 used stock con rod bolts from what i can see in the picture. Also the rods do not appear to have balance grinding done....hard to tell but a possibility. Reading before about the balancer issue and this one is black and definitely a 400, the flex plate also needed to be weighted (balanced). Saw a comment about internal balance...not sure if that was you. This 383 would be externally balanced hence the flex plate and balancer. Most 383's will have rod balance work done and grinding on the pad or rod cap. If the block was not clearance correctly it could have interference at high RPM and higher temps.

With all that said I suspect a broken rod bolt as these appear to be stock to me, the rod dwell and it's related ration puts stress on the rod in a 383. The part that takes the most stress is the bolt. Ensure on your next build to invest the extra $$ in some ARP rod bolts and follow the instructions for lube, stretch and torque specs for them. Personally I think your builder and the machine shop are at fault here if i am correct about the balance work and the use of stock GM used rod bolts.

You can do a low buck 383 bottom end but this is what can happen. Your gears, some RPM and having a little fun can take its toll. You got a few thousand miles out of it....it had to have been a part failure. I think your going in the right direction with a 355. Be sure you get your balancer and flex plate changed out for internally balanced that you will need for the 355.

Now just suggestion....ever thought of doing a higher RPM engine a 377. Basically a 400 engine with a 350 crank and rods, it will turn RPM's to the moon and has good torque. Pretty cool street engine and is fun with some tall gears like yours.....nothing sounds as wicked as high RPM screaming small block!!

A screaming motor would have been a lot of fun but the ball is already moving forward on the 355 and I'll be in small claims court next month so hopefully the judge sees it the same way you did, although many think my chances are slim......

Stopped at the machine shop today to drop off some parts and things are going well! The bottom of the block is all together and they are just waiting on 2 valves from Brodix to finish off the heads.

Right now I have a tentative apt on April 26th to run the dyno but there may be a cancellation before then that I'll swoop in and take.

So I found some time to get some work done over the last week....

1st step was building a set of these blocks (boy does it make it nice to get under the car)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/79d38931-1.jpg?t=1346027455

then I learned you should measure just how high you can get the vehicle in the air before building them (I had to take a layer off to fit)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/2b94533b-1.jpg?t=1346027455

routed new spark plug wires around the back of the valve covers - 1st time I've ever used the cut to length plug wires and I'm glad I did - made a huge difference on appearance and I don't have a bunch of wires laying all over the place
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/d6c425fc-1.jpg?t=1346027454

carb is on, radiator is in and fans are attached with hoses (I know the radiator top is FUGLY but I ordered a cover piece to clean it up)
up next bending the new trans lines, hooking up exhaust, cleaning up wiring and installing the fan control to run the electric fans, getting new belts adding fluids, and then hopefully having some fun driving it -- if Rochester weather can go back to sunny (last week 85 and sunny, yesterday 27 and snow !!)

Congratulations, Don, on your adorable little Camaro, and your adorable little bride, as well. Your Mrs. must be a swell lady, to approve the wedding day car wrenching. I'm sure both the Mrs. and the car will give you a lifetime of happiness.

Love the way this car is shaping up, too. I'm absolutely blown away by the all-out type builds chronicled in project threads here, but I find I'm more attracted to these cars which remain largely original - stock subframes, carb'ed sbc's... with tastefully inconspicuous infusions of modern performance. This makes me miss my little blue '68 Camaro soooo bad.

Center console gauges are installed (I like the way these turned out - car still looks like it could be factory) Still need to find a steering wheel that looks like it could be factory without spending an arm and a leg..

I'll be cleaning up wires once I can get into the pass side door.

Next up wiring fans and then all that's left is exhaust, throttle linkage, trans lines and a little fluid. Battery is charging and once I get it out of the garage and can get the pass door open I'll clean up the rest of the wires from the new gauges.

She's not running as smooth as I would like - after speaking with the engine builder he reminded me of my distributor was getting old and the weights were worn out - we are thinking that is leading to the idle being erratic - so next upgrade is a MSD ignition - ordered today

Dons67

A little delayed with updates, MSD is in with a new distributor and MSD box. Been running great but still a hesitation between 1800-2200 rpm. I have been driving the car a lot this season and even made a trip to Syracuse in July for the Syracuse National's - she ran GREAT - cruised at 75mph all the way there and back with no issues, the weather was great and life was good.Unfortunately by the time the car was done I missed all the local SCCA events except 2 (both of which were on weekends I could not attend).

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/CAMAROPARK-1.jpg

A few weeks ago she left me stranded at work....

Found the Edelbrock carb is leaking through the side linkage and may have been my issue all along - the guys at the machine shop where I purchased the carb have been great but I decided to rebuild a 4150 that I had from the last motor as I never felt like she started. I also decided to add a fuel pressure regulator and gauge while I'm at it as I was told there may be too much pressure going to the carb.

she looks good Don! I've got the same problem with a hesitation with my motor, but it seems its usually when its cold and if you get on the throttle hard from idle. I changed the plugs and wires, put a new module in my hei. cap and rotor have hardly no miles on them. I THINK it goes away when its warm, not quite sure yet, jury is still out on that one. Its either a timing thing or a carb issue, I also am running an edelbrock carb. Let us know how you make out.

Just read the whole build. Awesome job on the car, and the build is a great story as well. Has its ups and downs, but in the end you have a beautiful wife and a great car!

I do remember I had some issues with my 68 running bad that the distributor caused as well. The module can easily go all screwy and cause very erratic running issues. Took me the better part of 6 months to figure it out, but it fixed right up once we did.

That is a pretty car. I know we get all hyped up about big wheels and tires, but the clean lines of a first gen with some rally's, a little bit of tire and the right stance is what caught my eye at a young age. You have really put together a great example of the first gens that I fell in love with.

Life's been hectic so not a lot has been going on other than house repairs - replaced carb and she has been on the road fine (still not in love with the edelbrock carb so i think a holly is next in line)

it is now time for some upgrades again !! -- she'll be off the road for about 2 weeks but still pleanty of time to enjoy some of NY's beautiful twisty roads in the fall (my favorite time of year)
-global west tubular uppers
-poly bushings in factory lowers
-poly sub frame mounts
-frame ties
-taking 1/2 a coil off front springs
-DSE rear leaf springs
-changing the shock mounts in the rear to inside the frame rails
-adding a adjustable brake distribution block (right now i don't have much stopping power in the back)
-replacing the hood with a cowl hood because the air cleaner hits the factory hood

started by removing the gas tank and rear springs to find there has been a little "letting go" by the rear frame rail - I have a welder adding some metal and tightening that back up

here is the new shock bar for the rear - the new location should help out with traction in back - - we will see how that shakes out

back on the road again !!!

wow what a difference a few weeks can make - just need to re-adjust the rear exhaust as it's rubbing a bit, adjust the shocks a little tighter and add some snubbers to the front control arms as the tires are hitting a little when you go into a corner hard or when you hit a bump in the road at speed - - may bee a tad too low and i may need to replace the front springs if it turns into a problem -- otherwise she gets aligned on monday and back to being driven daily

This year's upgrade.......

Had a blast driving last year after the suspension upgrades but the front is just too low so I have ordered a set of DSE front lowering springs and recieved a special delivery from Jason at Rushforth Wheels yesterday......

I went with a 17x8 for the front and a 17x9.5 for the rear - we have horrible roads here in the Rochester NY area and I wanted to stick with 17's to keep a little rubber between the wheels and the road.

Jason was great and I can't wait to get these things on Grace, so much for keeping it looking as stock as possible.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to get valve stems and which ones I should use as with these wheels the holes are on the inside of the rim.

Thanks,
Don

I am also torn on which tire to use has anyone had any experience with the Nitto NT05 or the BFGoodrich Sport Comp 2 tires? I drive mostly on dry roads and I am a bit aggressive but I can't find anyone who has ran either for an opinion. I am also open to suggestions on something different but haven't found too many options for m size set... 275/45 17 rear and either 235 or 245/40 17 in the front.

Thanks,
Don

I've used the BFGs on my old 04 GTO. They don't really like to grip. I've used the Nitto drag radial variant of those and they worked pretty well on the street and were decent in the rain.

New wheels look good. The front will settle down a bit with some driving. If not, check the spring clocking in the pocket. I had to rotate mine slightly to get it to seat properly.

this has escalated quickly

what started off as a new wiring harness and a few small upgrades has escalated into quite the punch list - now i understand how so many of you have had projects off the road for years at a time - i am so thankful to have found a good shop to work on this thing while take care of all the house chores

motor is out again for a cam upgrade to wake it up to its potential plus a new pan for additional oiling and cooling plus we are adding the gm serp drive kit while it's all out and i was talked into efi as i drive this most of the summer
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/04/galleriesef71799f005a301f322b786b090c200-1.jpeg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/04/galleriesef71799f005a301f322b786b090c200-2.jpeg

while its out ya got to clean up the firewall a bit and spray it - also the steering box started leaking so that's getting the boot

front is all wired up and tucked into the fenders to clean up the engine bay - also deleting the front round lights as the new led's have orange signal led's built into the housing - the whole front end is getting blacked out with a billet grill and all the trim work satin black powder coated
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/04/galleries09b6a0ed5c57e348f17a9d1a5099af9-1.jpeg

while at it i had the 2004r looked at and found it to be tired so a new one is on the way from extreme automatics - no going back now

also found the inside of the rear tires rubbing so a watts link is also going in

with all the little things added this should be night and day difference this year - hoping to get it wrapped up in 2-3 weeks so i can get some autocross in before columbus goodguys in july - looking forward to a bigger event and seeing my brother who lives down that way - he has a 2nd gen bird that he thinks he can out drive me in - we'll see

Exciting day for me - progress is moving along as parts are now going back in instead of being taken out

Gas tank is in

engine and trans are in -very happy the new extra deep trans pan doesn’t drop low enough to worry about it

Very impressed with the clearance around the headers and oil pan - i can still put a full size oil filter on and there is lots of room around the steering box

Only hick-up is the drive shaft will need to be shortened 3/4” but that only takes a couple of days so no delay of game penalties there

-steering column
-seats and belts
-finish out the exhaust
-fabricate driver side mount for the watts link (hitting relocated shocks)
-tidy up some wires

I like it!
Which wiring harness is that? The fuse box looks similar to the Speedway 22 and American Autowire 20 but on these two, the labels are upside down when mounted as you have shown (also the same way I intend to mount mine). Zooming in on your picture, the labels are blurry but they look to be printed right side up.

Thanks guys - i can’t wait to get it on the road, its pretty much my daily driver during the summer months

Went with the American auto wire kit for 1st gen Camaro - had almost everything to do the job clouding new ignition and all the sockets

Seats are in with most of the interior

Columbus GoodGuys was a blast, spent the whole time with my brother who lives there and i don’t see nearly enough (he’s the only sane one in the family) - beautiful weather and a learning experience getting confortable with the car set up - not the fastest car and missed the sweet 16 shootout by 4sec but very happy considering my budget and the limited amount of time in the car - i was able to shave almost 8 sec off my time from day 1 to day 2 with some suspension and tire pressure adjustments (i never would have thought to add more air pressure until i did some research) which made me very happy - next stop CAM Challange in Indiana where i’m Looking forward to meeting some more folks with cars like mine and learning something new

With my brothers car at the drag strip - happy with reaction times but 60 foot times sucked on street tires

Pictures look good Don. So... who won the drag race?

Dons67
07-19-2018, 05:36 PM
Sadly he had the faster car but he also is running drag radial tires and i was on my fresh falkens that i did not have the right pressure in yet - needless to say my 60 foot times sucked - i did have better reaction times! He was too chicken **** to take on the auto cross and actually do some driving - lol - i even offered to let him be the 2nd driver I’m my car

Back at it again. Had a lot of fun last year with Autocross and decided no project is ever really finished so time for some upgrades.
160115
Up off the ground in the garage with the front end ripped out and rear parts removed.
160116
Front now has truturn, double adjustable coil overs and 750lb springs - bigger wheels and rotors to come.
160117
Rear is getting a similar treatment with z51 brake upgrade and double adjustable shocks

More parts arriving Friday with mods for some big rubber - 315 front 335 rear - so much for the simple ‘keep it looking somewhat factory looking’ from 10yrs ago when I first got her. 160118

Hmm, I'll be following along. Curious how you're going to fit 315 tire in the front. Flare/stretch the fenders?

Dons67
01-10-2019, 06:42 PM
Flares from Mr Vengeance - there isn’t anything really left from original 67 so I figure what the hell - with all the part support it can always be put back together in 20 years.

Was able to get brakes fitted today. Nice pieces from KORE3 and Tobin was a huge help in getting the pieces needed to do it right out of the gate.

Question: it’s hard to tell in this pic but there is only about 1/4” space between the truturn and the oil pan. Motor has solid mounts - I would think although tight it would be fine but has anyone had experience with it?

Nice work Don! Those brakes should bring the car to a stop in a hurry. I'm running the same Z51 front brakes and from the little I drove the car, it stopped very quickly. I'll grab that sway bar from you next time I'm in the area.

BTW, you may want to reconsider using those cinder blocks to supports the full weight of the car. Those are known to crack/collapse under load.

I agree completely-99.9% of the weight is currently supported by 4 jack stands and 2 wood tire blocks I made out of 2x4 - the 2 blocks in the front I can move around - put them there more for piece of mind - figured if at some point I couldn’t move them I had an issue and if a jack stand fails it may give me a moment to react.

I know the feeling but at the end of the day I didn’t have $10k for a front sub frame (or the talent) to do the work in 6 months. Going to matte black the flares and new wheels so I’m hoping it all works out. Also going to remove the front bumper and add a splitter I think, no I’m not, no wait yes I am - lol

Having a hard time choosing the final wheel from Rushforth - Rated X’s or Live Wires.

Busy month or so. Alignment scheduled for Thursday and 1st Autocross up here is a week from Sunday!

She’s back on the ground with the new wheels and suspension upgrades.
Final steps include:
Bleed brakes
Install rear shocks
Alignment
Final testing of wheel clearance
Re-positioning the flares
Install hood vents and air cleaner
Radio that never was installed last year.

It was a few years ago and I’m not 100% but I am 90% positive it was the one from Camaro Central - I didn’t like polished so I had it Powdercoated satin black with the original headlight buckets and the top and bottom trim pieces. I also upgraded to a LED headlight that has signals built in for running/turn.
