A little background on the project:

I work part time as a mechanic at a local garage in the morning for a friend of mine. We had this car for two years while we tried to get in contact with the owner. The owner never got in touch with us, so the process was started for the mechanic's lien. After 90 days in lockup while the state went through the process, I had the car delivered to my house with a free and clear title in hand.

The Plan:

Most of the car will remain stock with a few mods to make it more drivable. I plan to put rear disk brakes on, possibly a throttle body injection setup on the stock 462, and of course some rims. The car will be repainted in the same blue color and the top will be replaced with a factory White top.

How it came:

A little bit of update:

I have been able to get the engine to turn over by hand after soaking the cylinders down with Marvel Mystery Oil. The engine has a pretty recent build on it as you will see, but they let it sit with no oil in the pan. I rebuilt the distributor with a Pertronix electronic ignition setup. I have recently found that they had removed the oil pump when I went to pull the distributor to prime the oil pump. I have got a new oil pump and a new oil pump shaft as well, so I just need to drop the pan and put them in. The car does have air bags already as well and they are now working. I have also got the top working with a little help, but I have since pulled two of the cylinders and one of the pumps to have them rebuilt by my father.

These head look fresh out of the machine shop, so there is very little mileage on this engine if any at all.

Thanks, guys!

Right now I am waiting for time to put the oil pump and shaft in. I am hoping that they didn't mess anything else up when they went through this engine. I will know more about it when I drop the pan to do the oil pump.

The 462cid in this car is hard to find parts for, so I really do not want to be having to go through it yet. I am hoping to get it running and drivable while I am doing the all the body work. I need to get a nice welder for this project, so if anyone has any recomendations feel free to drop them. I am not looking for anything big, just a small MIG should work just fine. I have been looking at the Lincoln Power 180 MIG.

Cool Car... I think in falls into Slow-Toring, not Pro-Touring... LOL

I picked up a land yacht a few months ago.. 1964 Olds Super 88 4 door hard top... I always like Continental... (but I'm a GM guy and this one kind a fell in my lap)

Good Luck!

Two radios in the gauge console? What is that all about? Front seat, back seat?

Great car though...talk about taking the family and some friends (or 12) for a summer cruise with the top down!

I have always been more of a GM guy myself as well, but I have always had respect for the suicide door Lincolns.

There is only one radio. The unit on the right is the radio, and the unit on the left is the automatic temp control. The knob to the left of the temp control unit is the headlight switch, and the knob on the right of the temp control unit is the actual temp adjust. It has a dial like a radio and as you adjust the temp it runs a needle across the dial like a radio tuner would. Lincoln wanted to make sure that everything looked balance in the design of the dash.

I dropped the oil pan this morning and found that the rear main cap was off. I inspected the crank and the cap and found that it was usable. I went through and inspected each cap and the re-torqued everything back down. I finished up by installing the New oil pump and shaft as well. The oil pickup was in the car, so it was useable as well. Hopefully I will be able to sill up the pan on Thursday and then prim the new pump and complete engine on Friday or Saturday

The rear main cap was off? As in, laying loose in the pan? WOW. Good thing you didn't start the car w/o checking.

That kinda implies that someone was in there before you - what else could be messed up?

The engine has been built and has very little mileage on it since. The heads were super clean when I pulled the valve covers, and the bottom end was really clean as well. I think they ran into an oil pressure issue and while they were in there they went through the caps to make sure there was no bearing damage and just never finished the job and towed it to the shop.

This is how things looked when I dropped the pan this morning. Remember that there was no oil in the engine for that 2+ years that it set, as well as no drain plug so most of what you see is because of that.

Great project, very different platform!

Wish the American car industry was doing cool stuff like this today (i.e. suicide door verts). This was why they owned the market back in the 50s-60s, they took risks.

Now everything looks the same.

Best of luck!

Cheers,

Awesome car , there is a guy in my neighborhood that drives one around in the summer time..It is slammed and has some nice wheels, looks killer.....There is also a boneyard near me that has a couple of these cars in there, hard tops but they look very complete so if you need anything from them let me know and i can pass along the number...

Thanks for the new fact of the day!

They didn't have air ride originally. Somebody was building this car up when they left it at the shop. They had all the fab work done for the bags, gone through the engine as well as replace all the seat covers. This means that a lot of the stuff that I was looking at having to do has already been done to the car. Granted I will have to re-fab the rear air bag setup because the links they made actually hit the shocks since they did not move the shock mount. Overall this is an easy enough fix.

lots of potential there, I'd certainly pimp it out.

Here's a nice one that was at the 2010 Detroit Autorama show, I'm not crazy about the rims though but the car is awesome!

EDIT: got pics fixed!

It is only running off of fuel that I poured into the bowl of the Carb. I do not have the throttle linkage hooked up, so I was having a hard time to get it to fire right up since I couldn't pump the throttle.

Thanks guys!

put (yt) and (/yt) on either side of that--except use [] brackets instead of () parentheses.
