My buddy Frank is just finishing up this twin turbo 63 Chevy II, that he just dynoed. This a stock LS1 block and crank, with good pistons and rods, and some as cast Dart heads, with some chamber work done. It amazed me laying down 758 HP at the wheels though a loose converter and turbo 400, with a dana 60. Thats somewhere around 1000 at the crank. Crazy

nice looking setup
I hope he put the good stuff on the internals so he doesnt have to tear it down in the near future.

Yeah that's awesome, seemingly no need for the big cubes on the turbo motors even though we all do it anyway. Doesn't make much sense to put in a forged bottom end and not stroke it up a bit.
I think calling that 1000 crank is optimistic though, I think you need around 850rwhp to start calling it 1000hp.

With an automatic and a loose converter,I've heard 20 & 25 percent lose, but either way, pretty descent #'s. Love the sanitary plumbing on the car, and was Not a boat load of money, for those kind of HP.
I didn't know the stock crank would hold up to that.
Tidy setup he's got in that engine bay there.

looks great Ron. I'll be curious to see how it does idling in hot weather with the hood closed.

He's pulling all the turbo parts off and having them coated. From what I understand the coating for these turbo parts is almost as much as the turbo's. It is really supposed to keep the heat down though. Ron

I was referring to the complete radiator being blocked by the intercooler, and having a hood on it. If it's a flat hood there's no way for the heat to get out and the air gets so hot that the engine starts running hotter. I fought that on mine, even with all the coating and pipe wrapping, bagging the turbo, etc. Of course that was a 64 Chevelle with a stock flat hood and full inner fenderwells. A cowl hood would have cured it but I didn't like the look. If my hood was even popped up to the safety catch it was fine.
Pretty common issue if the air can't get out of the engine compartment, and wrapping and coating won't solve it.

Yeah this car has a pin on 5" cowl, who knows, it still may be a problem. I'm hoping he and I, are going to do some serious abusing of our cars this summer. We'll see

the cowl should help quite a bit. Have fun and good luck.

The crank should hold up for a while if the tune is good. Local dudes are dipping into the 9.4 sec. range on stock internals and run them for a couple years before having issues.

nice numbers ,how much boost is the car seeing

I beleive it is set at 10 lbs., but he discovered that there was some drift on the high RPM's,(waste gates not quite big enough) I think it maxed out at 14 lbs. on the rev limiter. Ron

Any more info as to head cc's, cam etc? Thats a lot of power for that little of boost on a stock displacement LS1?

He many need to to move the entire front end forward 4 inches to make room for a shroud with some power fans on it. Also putting a hood with a cowl induction over the front area of the hood to force air over the top of the engine and out the bottom will help with hot air evac from the engine compartment when its running and give a convection effect when its idling.

I just noticed this, thanks for posting Ron. Thanks for the great comments everyone! So far I have 200+ miles on it and no major issues. I replaced the 38mm wastegates with 45mm gates and now I have much better boost control and I can lower the boost down to a much more managable hp level for the street. Temps are good with the hood on it so far. Maintains 180* always. Most of the airflow into the radiator comes from underneath the car. I still curious how it will do in the summer heat. I haven't been out with it past 80* yet. Thanks again for all the great comments, can't wait to meet some of you guys when I do some even't with Ron this summer.
Here are a couple pix of the finished product. (well as close to finished as it will be)

stock LS1 crank are pretty stout. plenty of guys on corvetteforum running the stock crank on very high hp applications.
stock pistons are another question though. i'll keep my fingers crossed, but there's a strong chance that your buddy might blow a hole in a piston
edit;
just saw that he has forged pistons - that motor should hold up just fine.

That's fantastic. What boost levels? What A/F?
Give it hell on the stock stuff. Then go big if it won't take it.
I dropped 40* underhood temps coating everything. And it would cool to the touch in a matter of minutes as opposed to everything staying hot for an hour. Good stuff. Makes wrenching at the track much more pleasant.
Considered alky injection? You know, just in case 750+ RWHP ain't enough. :yum:

When I dyno'd it I had some boost creep, It started at 10psi till I hit 6k, then it creeped up to 14psi at 7k.
Funny you mention the ceramic coating, That's this weekends project! Got the satin black in yesterday.
I'm trying to stay away from meth injection. Your tune becomes too dependent on it and if something were to happen with the meth you are suddenly left with a super agressive tune and not enough octane for it! I've been adding a few gallons of 110 octane when I gas up, just for extra safety.

Figured I'd give you guys an update. The family and I had a ton of fun with the car down Ocean City for the big car cruise! Had 3 baby seats in the back, and needless to say the kids loved it! We did alot of cruisin!

Also got a chance to head to the drag strip. I kept the car in complete street trim. 17" wheels, swaybars hooked up, low boost, even had the baby seats still in the back.:) Good news is I ended up getting a talking to by the track officials! Car went 9.82 @ 136 at only 11psi. Needless to say I am very pleased with that! Here is a pic from the track. The guys at the track said it yanked the wheels alot higher but I'll find out when I get the video uploaded (have to get a firewire cable)

Awesome setup and wicked fast. Gotta love turbos and fuel injection. Things have sure changed alot in the last 15 years. A car that fast even just those 15 years ago would not be cruising around with 3 kids in the back.

Sorry if this seems like a noob question. I'm just wanting to know about the turbo set up. I'm more fimiliar with the pulling turbo set up of a first stage charger powering a bigger second stage charger. I would like some info on how this turbo setup is set up please.

Sorry, I updated my Sig. The Cam that was in there was actually bigger. I put a smaller cam in when I fabed the turbo's up. The one that's in there now is 226 @.050 on the intake side.

The Turbo's are in parallel. They "Y" at the bottom of the intercooler. Both are identical in size.

I was hoping you were going to post that 9.82 pass. You all need to understand how streetable this car is. Very impressive Frank, that holeshot pic is the best one I've seen of that car, really clear picture! I'm sure its your new screensaver. Ron
