this is an 04 LS1 out of a GTO this looks like there should be a sensor in here and my wire harness has an extra plug labeled air intake temperature or something- does that make sense- thanks ( thats a paper towel in there)

That is an 98-00 LS1 Camaro intake manifold and that is where the EGR tube would go.

thanks mike
where does that tube originate from??
I have inherited this project and I was under the assumtion this was an 04 LS1 out of a GTO how can I check to see exactly what I have ?
also can I eliminate the egr, or just block it. or do I need the ls6 intake?

You can plug it. GM sells a plug or you can make your own. The part numbers on the block and heads will help you figure out what you have.

As mentioned you can plug it. A couple places sell nice ones or you can get a rubber expansion plug for a quick fill. The EGR used to mount on the front of the passenger cyliner head and the pipe ran from there to the intake.
I think I can see part of the PCV system at the back of the intake. It went from the rear of the drivers valve cover, tee'd into the rear of the passenger valve cover and then to the PCV valve. The 2004 GTO did not have any extrenal PCV valve and just had a short hose from under the intake at the valley cover to the intake manifold.
There is a casting number on the outside of the cylinder head very close to the valve cover gasket surface and near the oil fill tube that will help out in indentifying what you have. If for some reason it is not there check the same area at the power steering bracket on the drivers side.
If it is a 2004 GTO you should have 241 castings. Most likely you will have 853 castings which would be a 99-00 F-body. Hopefully you do not have the perimeter bolt valve covers as then it would be a 98 F-Body engine. This would be a bummer both engine and PCM wise
If it was a Corvette, it would not have an EGR.
I think somebody did some fibbin' to you on what you were getting. But I will say that the carbon fiber fuel rail covers are for a GTO by the shape.
Hope this helps.

thanks again for the info- i was not told by anyone what this was but my brother had purchased the motor and trans in march 05 and it came with the silver GTO rail covers( I made the carbon ones off of the gto ones) , at that time he sent a pic so i just assumed 04 GTO,He passed away in May 05. So I inherited the car and was finally able to get it in August of 06. He did get a pcm from wait 4 me performance and the scematic says 99-00 5.7 liter, i thought this was a misprint or the wrong diagram but based on what you have said it would seem that this is NOT the GTO motor. What is better the block off plate or the plug? Thanks again for your help

just buy an ls6 intake. it wont have the whole, and will gain about 15 hp over that intake
