IT'S OFFICIAL!!!
David Pozzi and I will be running in the 2010 Tire Rack One Lap of America with support from OPTIMA Batteries, Hellwig Products, and ISIS Power!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OPTIMA® Batteries to sponsor the OneLapCamaro
in the 2010 Tire Rack One Lap of America

February 22, 2010 (MILWAUKEE) – OPTIMA® Batteries and the OneLapCamaro Team is pleased to announce the OPTIMA Batteries OneLapCamaro, a highly-modified 1967 Camaro RS, will participate in the 2010 Tire Rack One Lap of America, one of the most challenging motorsports events in the world. On April 30, 2010, James Shipka and David Pozzi will start the eight day, 3,600-mile cross-country rally with competition stops at some of America’s most challenging race tracks.

The OPTIMA Batteries OneLapCamaro was built and designed specifically for sanctioned public highway competitions such as the Silver State Classic Challenge and the multi-discipline Tire Rack One Lap of America endurance competition. Powered by an LS7 engine and backed by a six-speed manual gearbox, the OPTIMA Batteries OneLapCamaro combines classic muscle car styling with modern technology. The vehicle will be in its element as it traverses 3,600 miles through 13 states over the course of 8 days and will compete twice daily at more than 11 unique venues.

“OPTIMA’s relationship with James Shipka and his OneLapCamaro team will prove that our batteries are made to exceed the rigorous demands of racing and street driving,” said Cam Douglass, Director of Product Development and Marketing for OPTIMA Batteries. “This entire effort is anchored by a top-notch team of motorsports enthusiasts, also including David and Mary Pozzi, who are veteran participants of our annual OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational.”

The OneLapCamaro Team’s goal is to not only complete the 2010 Tire Rack One Lap of America, but to do it in a way that ensures as many people as possible can become personally involved in the adventure and join in the excitement and the challenge of the Tire Rack One Lap of America. The team’s website, www.OneLapCamaro.com (http://www.onelapcamaro.com/), will include live updates throughout the event, tracking the Camaro’s progress with real time GPS mapping and daily event summaries with commentary, pictures and video.

The Tire Rack One Lap of America is the modern evolution of the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Dash dating back to the early 1970’s. Now in its 26th year, the event evolved from a 48 state “Cannonball Run” to its present format which starts and finishes on the skidpad at Tire Rack’s headquarters in South Bend, Indiana. On April 30, 2010, the competition will begin on Tire Rack’s wet skidpad and then will make a 3,600 mile circuit with stops for time trials at Road America, Mid-America, Hallett, Tulsa Raceway Park, Gateway Raceway, mid-Ohio, New Jersey, and Nelson Ledges before concluding eith days later on the dry skidpad. There are very few rules for the One Lap event, except no chase or support vehicles are allowed and competitors must drive from event to event through the week, making it the penultimate test of endurance, reliability and performance.

Support for the 2010 entry in the One Lap of America comes from OPTIMA Batteries (Milwaukee), as well as Hellwig Products (Visalia, California) and ISIS Power (Chicago). Rounding out the OPTIMA Batteries OneLapCamaro team is a unique network of volunteers from across North America.

We’re going to be busy over the next few weeks and hope to have some more announcements and ways that you can be involved in our 2010 One Lap of America efforts soon. We’ll have a new website up and (hopefully) running before the end of the month and hope that we can represent Pro-Touring and OPTIMA Batteries and everyone in a way that makes everybody proud.

David and I are going in to this to really show what these cars are capable and with some preparation, luck, and help I think that we can pull it off. Sitting here now though… it’s a really daunting proposition… wow!

The One Lap schedule is always tentative... Brock Yates has been known to add or alter events at almost any point during the event. Although none are scheduled right now, the last two years has seen the inclusion of Autocross events so it’s possible that there will be one this year as well.

These events are run Rain or Shine – if you look at some of the One Lap history, you’ll see competitors running in the pouring rain on the Texas Motor Speedway.

Wow...that is alot of driving each day...will you be fresh and sharp to drive in the events after 10-11 hours behind the wheel after those 500+ miles....hopefully you will have someone take over for the highway miles.

The first rule of the One Lap of America is that competition drivers (minimum of two, maximum of four per vehicle) must drive the transit stages - no substitions or relief drivers.

The second rule of the One Lap of America is that there are no tow vehicles, chase vehicles, or support vehicles allowed - you can brin whatever you want with you so long as it's in, on, or towed behind the car.

The third rule of the One Lap of America is that you have to finish the event on the same, marked, set of tires that you start with. You can change tires in the event of a failure but not wear.

When you consider those three rules are pretty much the only rules... it's an intimidating deal.

We are going to try to put together an "emergency" support network of volunteers along the route (more on that soon) to at least give us some options for help if we run in to trouble or need a shop, lift, or driveway for an hour.

Jason Rushforth is putting the final touches on the rendering for the car (we're going to do a partial wrap) which we should have up in the next day or two and hopefully we'll have some other stuff to share as the week goes on.

Finally a post I can comment on instead of just lurking...

The mileage for 2010 is a cake walk. You will have more than enough time to get a hotel every night and get at least 6 hours of sleep in a bed each night. That's a lot for One Lap. 2 people can handle this mileage without any problems. I did almost 4200 miles in '99 with 2 drivers no problem.

In '97 we did over 5500 miles starting at the Glen in NY, out to Vegas and back in the same amount of time. Some of the day's had 450 mile transits mid day between events. The longest was from Vegas to Hallet, like 1200+ miles.

Support vehicles are not allowed, unless you enter them in the event. Now with the allowance of trailers the support car isn't really needed. But, if you want to enter a pickup in the SUV class with a bed full of spares, just pay the entry fee and you have a rolling spare parts inventory with a couple extra bodies for wrenching.

Tire wear should not be a concern, even if you run a couple degrees of negative. It's only a few thousand miles and you will have plenty of tread left. I would shave a set if you can get away with it. At least pull a couple 32nds off before the start somehow.

It would be nice to see some pro touring cars get back into the Vintage American class. The class has been pretty bare lately and not much to talk about.

Best advice is to run the car at about 9 tenths the whole event. You spin, you lose. It's very difficult, near impossible to make up for a DNF and get back to the top 10. Let the competition break and make mistakes, it will just benefit the consistent finisher.

Also, try and leave the car alone. Only fix it if it's broken. Don't try to adjust a bunch of stuff if you can avoid it. Drive it the way it is. There is not enough time, or laps, at the events to make any significant changes. I've seen a lot of people do more damage to lap times by constantly messing with stuff the whole week. Just run it...

If you need any help or advice, feel free to ask. I've done One Lap 8 times, so I've pretty much seen it all. Finished 4th Overall in a Vintage American car in '97 and 1st Overall in a SSGT1 car in '99.

Good luck,

Kevin Wesley

Trailer hitch? Small trailer?

David found a great trailer earlier this week that just needs a little bit of clean up and a tweak here or there. Once we find a way to put air in the tires we'll post some pictures (lol). As soon as the trailer is in the sho[ we'll start mocking up the hitch plans and get it together.

We've been debating the trailer for about a month now, and it would be great if we could find away around taking it but besides needing the room (sometimes I look at our spares "wish list" and shake my head) but it also saves us a bunch of time at track stops - it's easy to pack the trunk for a road trip but it's another issue to pack and unpack it every day (at the track), especially when we're in a hurry.

Thanks Kevin,

You're right - this years mileage is not that bad... yet. Brock's original schedule for this years race was about 400 miles longer and included stops at the Montecello track and something called the Chemung Speedrome - a 3/8 mile oval. Montecello was cut as Brock thought it was too technically complicated (which is saying alot considering last years event included Sebring and Daytona) and thankfully the oval went with it. I'm expecting something to be added too the schedule in the next couple of weeks but we'll be ready fot it.

We debated a second entry... but have settled on a small trailer. Lots of pros and cons and time will tell if we have made the right decision...

I'm not worried about tread wear at all. Our front alignment is pretty conservative (comparitively speaking) at 5.5 and -1.5 and once we get used to the Michelin's I think we will be ok.

I think that the vintage class this year will be a lot of fun. The last three or four years it has been a little light (which is one of the reasons that I wanted to do the event) but there will be at least a couple of cool muscle cars entered this year.

Our goal, first and foremost is to finish the event and show what a 40 year old car is capable of. There is some pretty serious competition this year; besides the usual Corvettes, Porsches, and Vipers, there is a 2010 Riley MKXXII and some other really serious hardware coming out. It's going to be tough - especially not being familier with a lot of these tracks - but we're going ot give it our best.

I'm sure that David and I will be tapping you for some advice over the next 8 weeks (yikes) before we start. Thanks for the support and we really appreciate the help!

Cheers
James

Hey James, are you on Twitter? It would be really easy to send out quick updates via that, then more detailed stuff on the website.

I set up a twitter account a while ago so that is an option. We also have a facebook page and a Blog page in addition to the website. They can all be updated via mobile although the blog has the added benefit of being able to easily upload pics as well. Downside with Twitter and Facebook is that they are increasingly blocked at work for people. Larry had suggested an email distribution of some kind which may work as well. We'll have a laptop with us and hope to be able to tap in to some local help for updates as we go.

I think that I will start a post over the weekend with a poll and see what people prefered method of updating would be. I have to look in to some of the options, but I know that you can automatically update your X with your Y in some cases...

We've tested a real time GPS tracker that we're going to use but need to incorportate the mapping functions into the site (or we can redirect people to the main site for the system). I'm going to go another test next week when we go to Willow Springs to try out some of the advanced functions (linking photo's to locations, etc.) but it looks promising.

The thing with cars like the Riley and such is that they have to finish. Plus, you have to be able to live in the thing for a few thousand miles. Unless that thing is showing up with a "shoe" behind the wheel, you can pretty much dismiss it... and the "shoe" needs to understand the event. I've seen plenty of "shoes" show up and do horrible because they couldn't grasp the concept of the whole thing. Remember that 9 tenths thing I mentioned. It's really important to having a successful event. You only need to beat the person you are racing. No trophy for fastest lap, lap recorder, etc... Keep the car running and avoid a DNF.

I'm sure that David and I will be tapping you for some advice over the next 8 weeks (yikes) before we start. Thanks for the support and we really appreciate the help!

Whatever I can do to help. There are some tricks to the whole game and some things to watch out for. Weather is often a great equalizer, so make sure to get some seat time in wet track conditions.

It will be fun to see an old car do well again. Just remember, if you don't think you brought enough power... bring the Nitrous. There are no rules.

Thanks,

Kevin Wesley

That's funny John - I asked Brock Yates about it earlier this month and his response was:

"There should be problems for friends or spectators to see the action. Some tracks may have a fee but all will require signing the track waiver."

I wouldn't hesitate to come check it out. Worst case you could tell them that you are with us. Stay in touch - we'll let you know what it seems like after the first couple of events.

With the 2010 Tire Rack One Lap of America officially upon us, I wanted to take a brief moment to thank all of the people who have generously extended offers of help along the route. The people listed below have made David and I feel both welcome and relieved to know that if we encounter difficulties along the route we have a name and a number of someone who can possibly help and certainly point us in the right direction if they can’t. That goes a long way to our piece of mind, confidence and says a lot about our community.

I have been trying to thank each and every one of you individually (and hope to have done that before we leave on Friday) but I wanted to thank you again – publicly – for your help. We could not do this without you and you have our sincerest thanks.

Greetings from South Bend!
just checking in here, managed to get wifi at the Motel. Met Brock Yates Jr today and got registered, James is on his way here finally after his first flight got cancelled. Rain is forecast for tomorrow, should make the wet skid pad at Tire Rack really "Wet".
Saw some entrants cars today including an Utima GTR! Should be many more tomorrow THE BIG DAY!

Hey David,

Good luck to you and James! If you need some entertainment, download my second podcast that I posted last night. Mary and I talked about the One Lap event and you guys.

Tha car looks great! I'm guessing that the gray or silver sides are just a paint protection wrap? Nooks nice!

Take care and good luck!

One-Lap of America has started. Just heard from Dave via text and they finished the wet skidpad at Tire Rack with .74 g's. The quickest was a GTR at .98 g's in the wet ... smokin' fast.

They're on their way to Road America as I'm typing this ...

As I hear updates, I'll pass 'em along.

And I think I see James sneaking up to the car with stickers in hand. Dave sent a pic and that sucker is all stickered up with the event sponsor stuff. I think there's a couple of inches that aren't covered up ... LOL.

My friend's Honda and their motorhome are in the background. I wish them good luck and they'll do great.

Cheers,
Mary Pozzi
