We are doing this 62 Chevie for my interior guy. Long story short, Wally wanted a monochromatic look with a modified version of the original teal color. I am not a big fan of the color at all, and hate it as I paint more and more pieces, but it is what he choose. So the other night while drinking a few beers, I told Wally he should let me California two tone it. He said, do what ever you want!

I am jumping for joy, but am having a hard time with colors.

One limiting factor is the second color will have to be the upper color because the bottom of the car and all the jams are already this lovely teal, and I am NOT changing it.

If I would have had my choice from the beginning and was forced to use this color, I would have done it a bright charcoal on the bottom. But as I said, changing the lower color is not an option

Right now, we are thinking black metallic on top to the molding right under the body line. I wish it did not even have moldings as I would like to do a nice stripe to divide the colors, but removing moldings also IS NOT an option.

Any ideas on colors, and how and where to break the color, will be appreciated. I just have to eliminate some of this teal color!

I think a nice metallic silver would look great. I know this sounds kinda traditional but white and teal look killer. You said he is a interior guy so white interior could be added also.

I like the Black idea. If anything it would make the teal color pop, and I think that the owner would probably like that since he is so intent on that teal. I just have to say that I feel sorry for you because you had to paint it in the first place.

That's funny, I don't care who you are,that's funny!

We sprayed the rest of the parts today, leaning heavy towards a highly metalic black, or super dark charcoal.

Still listineing though.

I think you are going in the right direction with the charcoal. Its to bad you couldn't phase out the moulding and go with a nice accent stripe say maybe a silver or something to break it up and transition!

What about a dark blue met tone? Late model GM Charcoal that has a bluish tint to it. Can't recall color name but it is used on the truck line a lot (probably too dark). Spray a pearl on the top portion to change shade. Maybe a green or blue pearl flake would change it up a bit. HOC silver would also be interesting contrast. Spray the mouldings silver than you can hit them with a little black or charcoal candy that Alsa and a couple others sell. Gives it that BMW wheel look but darker. Just some ramblings, good luck!!

04 kia has a color called carbon black metallic. looks very good(deep black), and has a faint bluish color in the right lighting. there is also a chrysler color called chrysler coarse grey metallic, very sharp, i am using on my car for an accent. is has a lot of colors in the light almost like a rainbow when you look very, very closely. i analyze colors too much and i am not even a body guy - lol.

i also like the idea of white and teal. just add a lot of bright blue, yellow and gold pearl in a top coat over the white. maybe use 03-04 gm truck summit white for the base. although, the black/grey and teal would probably look better.

I here you guy's on the white, but I want a pearl or metallic and basically hate Pearl white. White and black, when covered with mica or metallic, just get muddy in my opinion.

The color leans towards the green side of the color wheel, more then the blue side. I will look at the Kia color as I want to use something with a code he can easily get for repair later if he bumps it, it will be a daily driver. If I play mad scientist with multi stages, he will be tattooed later if he needs to fix it.

Actually I have also been looking at going real crazy with something like a mustard like the
Overhaulin 442, or a bronze, something way out there. Something that does not even attempt to match the hughes of the teal.

Keep talkin, talk me into something wild!

1972 olds spring green - might be too much green though, who knows it might make a good 2-tone.

I am sitting here as I type with PPG books open trying to pic color myself. Do you have a European PPG color book. Not the normal BMW stuff but Citroen,Dacia,Proton Etc? Names of cars I never heard of, anyway they have amazing non metallic colors. Colors you just do not see on US vehicles. They probably have about 10 grey greens that would be on your mustard type color but a better match in tone? Actually The Kia green is nice and Ford has a similar color they used on the late model TBird's. Good luck as I am off to mix and match myself.

Here Is One For You To Ponder. How About A Nice Creamy Venilla Color. Delete The Molding From The Side Of The Car And Use A (i Beleave It Is Called) Sun Dance Orange From The Gm Paint Book.

I think you might be screwed with that green. As someone mentioned, a photochop can tell a lot, so I did a few. I hate to say it, but ain't none of 'em really inspiring me, but take a look. I hope this helps... :dunno:

Dude, you are the man! I really appreciate that. I have got to learn to use that.

I have a 96 Explorer shop truck that is a limited in a Cream pearl color. like a pearl white, but creamy. I thought it may look good also, but I think I like the black metalic idea best.

I remember seeing a nice cream on the PT Cruiser. You would never know if it would work till you put them together though.
Good Luck

after looking at all the chops DB posted i like the black on top best. it kind of pulls your eyes right to the green color, i think your interior guy will like that a lot.

Black is too harsh. My first thought was white or silver, but the more I think about it, I am leaning to a medium slate gray with a teal metallic or pearl to pull the two colors together.

Or if you want to go wild, how about Prowler Purple. That would be different.

I have some at the shop, I will spray a card out today and look at it. If nothing else, the purple could be the perfect color to use in the insert of the aluminum trim down the side. I am having black metalics and charcoals mixed today.

First, my condolences on the teal (Seafoam). Is this thing going to be lowered? Big rims? Stock? Traditionally, I like to keep the darker colors on the bottom, but that doesn't help you much. If he's not PT'ing it out, a pearly white may be a more traditional option. Throw some flake in it to make it pop just for fun, that's easy to match should he become intimate with a vehicle, or the occasional tree that may jump out in front of him. I do like the charcoal idea, but that me be a bit much. Nevertheless, may I add, if you are painting a car for a guy that has his heart set on a color such as teal, he might be hard to please. Be carefull what you do for this guy in addition to his teal, make his sign his life away before you load your gun.

No, belive it or not it has rallies right now. It might get some Cragers at best! My guy is a real throw back to the sixties, and would not understand big wheels and tires. I'll be lucky if i can kep high jacker shakles off it!

I picked a real nice Dark Charcoal for it today for a Audi, with purple and teal Mica in it. Michael should start spraying Weds or so.

PC, would you get us some finished pics? I'd also be curious about his reaction.

If you used the right shade of gold and only did the roof , the bumpers and trim to match it would be very different than anything I have ever seen and it might look good?

Maybe it can be photoshopped and we can see what it looks like? Teal and Gold really set each other off.

Painting just the roof is a very classic thing on late 50s/early 60's sedans. And while I know you don't like the teal, and you don't like white, it is a classic and tasteful look:

We saved it! Shot it today with the Black metalic. Turned a hated teal color into a kind of cool color. While the teal is still not my choice, it does look pretty damn good now. I will get some pics tomorrow.

Thanks for the help, especially you DarkBuddha man.

Buddha, you are getting pretty good at this stuff. I'm for the teal and white, I have seen this combo before and it is priceless. It will also stand the test of time. As I say though.... do whatever floats your boat.

R.P.

P.S. Darn it, Prodigy you posted while I was writing out my thoughts. Anyways, knowing you from this forum it will look correct, that I'm sure of. Now that you started this thread I hope you are going to follow through with some finished pic's.

Glad to help... I just wanna see finished pic when it's done, so don't be stingy with 'em.

Thanks for the compliment. Turns out, doing this kind of stuff is like everything else... the more you practice, the better you get. Speaking of which, I've got some email requests to work on...
