View Full Version : Fairlane

I was going to build this Fairlane as a race car but changed my mind. I don't need two race cars. I wanted something different to drive to cruise nights and car shows to promote the shop. I have a 428 and a set of ported Edelbrock heads I took off the race car and a manual C-6.

This is what we started with

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/02/223-1.jpg

I thought I was going to have to buy a new quarter but I spent an afternoon with the dent puller

Nice to see someone else in the world with a club coupe! When someone asks what my first car is, i tell them my Ranchero is, but the truth is a 66 fairlane club coupe in the ugliest tan color you can imagine. My uncle picked it up from some old lady, sat in the shed for 8 years and when i turned 14 my dad got it for me and we were going to rebuild it for my high school car, have it finished by the time i turned 16. Then life happened, parents split up and the car got put back in the shed. What are your plans for the car? I always dreamt of a taxi-cab/plain jane look, white with white wheels and dog-dishers, FE engine. Good luck with the build! You're guaranteed at least one dude watchin it!

Since I started making it a Super Stocker we installed a roll cage and I still haven't decided what all we will do to the body now that is a street car. I'm thinking about cutting off the drip rails and doing away with the cowl vents. I have Opentracker upper and lower control arms with roller spring perches for the front. In the rear I have a set of Calvert monoleaf springs and CalTracs and a 9".

I always thought of grafting the 66-67 comet cyclone hood scoops into the stock steel fairlane hood. Everyone always runs the fairlane ram air hood, which is a good looking hood, but the graft might make for something a little different. If you're thinking of shaving the drip rails and doing away with the cowl vent then that idea may be par for the course!

Nice one....we had the local version of these Fairlanes here in Australia...in fact the model ran up to only a year or two ago. I've owned a few over the years including the 2nd last model I drive now.
Good luck with your project.

Nice looking build. I always wondered about body work, maybe you can shed some light for me. Once you get it as straight as you can is bondo acceptable? I understand its a thin coat to smooth things out but how does that hold up say 10yrs from now, any cracking? I've never done any body work before but am looking for a project car and wasnt sure about what you do if you cant get something perfect and no replacement panels are available.

haha, kidding.... but I'd definitely like to see more progress on the Fords! I guess I'm probably outnumbered on this site for that ;)

The Vega belongs to a friend of mine who has raced Chevy's since 1970. He went with me to an NMRA race in Bradenton a few years ago and the next day bought a 94 Mustang that he races once in awhile and drives on the street.

I look forward to meeting you.

As long as you use a good quality bondo it will hold up. I always strip the body to bare metal and than spray SPI epoxy on it than do my bondo work.

Be careful with the with spraying the bottom side of your car with urethane bedliner. Regular old fashion tar based undercoating works best. Not as heavy as bedliner but it still works well and blocks out the sound too. My old 68 Dart had dealer installed under-coating and work great for 40 years. Sold the car and still was on the car. The bummer part with urethane based bedliners is taking it off if you change your mind.

I believe Modified Mustangs & Fords magazine is going to do a budget built on a 66 Comet sedan. They want us to do the rust repair and advise the owner while he is doing the bodywork and than we will paint. We should be getting the Comet sometime in Oct.

There is a clearance issue with the front spring hanger and the CalTracs. We notched the front spring hanger and after I installed the springs found out it was binding at the frame rail. I decided I would correct this problem later. Since we started working on it again now is the time to fix it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

The frame rail will need to be notched for clearance. If you look at a stock Ford frame rail where the leaf springs bolts in the stock location it has been notched

You can see where the pin from the CalTracs was rubbing the frame rail and I marked where the top of the bracket is on the frame rail.

Hey Rusty,

This had happened to me before as well. I don't know if the same thing is what happened to you but I figured out what my situation was... I moved the pictures to new folders to better organize my pictures on photobucket and the original link to the photos were looking in the wrong spot... If that is what happened to you as well, all you have to do is to re-do your "copy and paste" with the new revised location of the photos...

Brian made patterns of all the interior trim panels out of poster board

The patterns were sent to Scott Rod Fabrications in Toledo Ohio and were made in aluminum.

NHRA requires the interior trim panels to have upholstery on them so I had Mike at Mike's Tops in Port Richey cover them in cloth.

After a lot of thinking and studying the NHRA classification guide I have decided to build a 302 from a 1968 Cougar and race it in GT/LA. It is rated at 230 hp and I can run aftermarket aluminum heads along with the same Quick Fuel carb that is the legal replacement for a 390 or 428CJ. This will be new for me because I only have experience with the FE motors. I believe it will be a lot cheaper to build than an FE and very competitive.

Looking good Rusty!

Where does the other end of the linkage go?

I assume the big link goes out to the rear of the car for the cutoff, but where does the link on the other side go to?

Is that just a fuse under the Painless cover?

It goes to the red lever so if you forget to turn it on and you are in the car you don't have to get back out and go around to the taillight.

Yes that is a fuse that came with the Painless control panel.

A friend of mine gave me the 9" rear and I think it came out of a Bronco. It is very hard to get the slicks to clear the 2" studs so to make it easier to install we are going to narrow the rear 1.25". That will center the 10.5" slick when I get a new set in the center of the wheel well.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/12/DSCN2436_zpstshi1x3t-1.jpg

The Wilwood brakes I have are for the late big Ford housing so we will install a set of Strange housing ends.

The battery cable runs along the frame rail. There is more clearance than the photo shows.

After measuring the rear that was in the Fairlane I found out the pinnon was not in the center. I had a rear out of a 1963 Galaxie that we started to narrow years ago but for some reason never finished. I measured it and once Brian welds the Strange late Ford housing ends it will be perfect for the Fairlane.

I ordered a back brace and heavy duty spring perches from Jeg's and Brian started fitting and welding today.

It's on hold for a little while. We are behind on customer projects so my projects are on hold. I've had a hard time finding good help for the shop so it has been just Brian and myself. Last week I hired someone to help out and so far he is doing a good job.

Test fit the old original 390 out of my Mustang into the Fairlane, The oil pan was a slight issue but the pan on the BP427 has a little more clearance in that area. Not use to having a car this nice ! it makes it harder to work on ! And I rolled out the tires I have for the Fairlane.
