Anyone put a universal rear mount turbo from sts on to a first gen camaro? If so can you please post pictures.

I've been interested in this as well, I've emailed STS twice, still waiting for a reply...

I never got a technical answer from STS, so I decided to build it myself.
I used SS pipes and elbows:

It should be finished in 2 or 3 months (I am switching to efi at the same time)
I will post some newer pics with the turbo installed in the car this evening.

I have to finish the intake pipe (3" SS also):

Looks nice! You need to start making these kits for the older muscle cars.:)

The engine is a 383 ,with a 200-4R trans.
For the beginning, I will stay with low 7PSI boost.
I will maybe increase it after upgrading the engine block and crank.

How well do these sorts of setups work? First time I heard about them everyone was basically saying they would not work very well. I always was kind of interested in them though especially for a tight engine compartment.

It'll cost you about the same to build it yourself, using higher quality materials and parts. Just find a reliable exhaust shop and you're golden.

I have an STS kit on my '05 GTO and it's ****.

What kind of turbo is that? Looks pretty nice!

That is what I was thinking.
for the same price, I was able to choose all the components. STS never replied my mails about technical questions, to tell me which turbo would be sent with the kit.
I contacted TD Autowerkes, they gave me advices on the turbocharger...
the turbo is a precision 6765 journal bearing with billet compressor wheel.

I noticed that compressor wheel. Looks nice my man!!

What kind of power are you looking for? I like driving mine because it has nice and linear power delivery... nothing unexpected or violent.

Although, I'd kill for a KB..... :/

stupid question but would it be easier to make food power with this type of turbo setup on an efi car vs. A carb. What real world problem would one expect.

Basically, they work.

I remember reading in my Fastest Streat Car magazine, where I believe one was running 6's with a rear mount set up.

I don't know about FOOD power.......but.....:)
GOOD power, yes Efi will usually run a bit better than a carb. But only because of better tunability. Carbs work just fine tho I must say!

Wow ! These pics raise so many questions for me.
How will you handle oil feed and drain for the turbo ??
And clean air intake to the turbo ??
And will not turbo lag be measured in minutes ??

Don't get me wrong, it is a Beautiful set-up, and I hope it works even Better than you want it to. But my experiences with different header (exhaust) lengths and intercoolers (intake lengths) with my Buick has shown that even small changes (when everything is right at the engine) can cause very noticable differences in lag.

Hopefully someone can explain what I'm missing ? ?

You may be talking about Paul Major's Z06, I believe he has gone 6.98@210.

Do you have any worry with all that heat near the gas tank?

gui67

The turbo will be insulated with exhaust wrap.
Before, I had a single crossflow muffler between the rear axle and the tank: the surface to radiate heat to the tank was much bigger and close to the tank then the turbo, even if the temperature is higher. (the muffler was nearly touching the tank)
I don't think it will be a problem. if the temperature of the fuel goes too high, I will add a screen to decrease radiation.

GUI67,

we need an update, or start your own thread!

i have a front mount setup for sale, i have alot of people come with rear mount setups to change to front mount because of the boost lag oil problems

That's kind of a blanket statement. Were these setups installed correctly, what were they doing for oil control? Was the turbo sized properly? Many individuals who try to size the system on their own are too used to the specs of a front mount system.

gui67:

I'm worried that your intake tube is too large. I think the ones from STS are only 1.75 - 2.00 inch tube.

We will see:
I should be able to start in 1 week or 2.
if it is too large, I can always start a new one. (at least it will act more like a intercooler with the bigger exchange surface)
I will let you know.

Sounds good, I will be interested to hear the feedback. I am hoping to hear that it works perfectly :)
