View Full Version : wheel and tire package help...where to buy Boss wheels for 1200 or less?

ok, so the title will definitely put me in a different catagory for purchasing, however we kind of have our heart set on Boss 338's with black centers, staggered, 18's....Im also liking the Boss 335's. although I cant any pics of them on cars in here???Im also open to bmw wheels if the have a stagger set-up, as long as I can get the right backspacing. The car is a 71 Cutlass S, and will roll on stock suspension for this year, unless I can pick up a set of lowering springs cheap when I convert the front to disc...so...anyone out there know of any good links?

I seen jd wheels has good prices on the wheels, but I was wondering if any companies sold them as a package? or is it cheaper to buy the wheels, and do the tire thing from elsewhere?

ok, nix the 335's...they are only in 20's...so its just back to the 338's for a package deal?

check out my build thread (in sig), i have 18" boss 338 in black with the chrome lip and stagged 18x10 rear (or 9.5 i forgot) and 18x8 front wrapped in 285/40/18 and 235/40/18 (shoulda went 245 o well) my car is not finished but i can get you close ups if you want. I wana say i payed 1700 all together but i bought the wheels and tires separately

If you want i can pm you the links where i bought both, the tire place is the cheapest you'll find and the place i bought the wheels were excellent to deal with

a guy on team camaro has them in grey on his 67:

so far I got one quote from Mr. Wheel Deal for 639 for wheels, 689 for toyo tires (2) 255-50-18 & (2) 295-45-18 with 178 for shipping. I seem to remember seeing the wheels for 599 to 625 on ebay shipped, and for tires...I could easily go with som Kumho, or similar tire, but the Mr wheel deal said those are the sizes he picked??..Im thinking that may too big for the cutlass?

Those are some tall ass tires
255/50/18 = 28" tall
295/45/18 = 28.5" tall

My plan is to buy the wheels off ebay for $600 shipped and then get tires either locally or from tirerack (whoever has the best price)

Andrewb has a GTO with 295/45/18's in back, unsure of what is on the front, so I know they will fit as the 71 cutlass has more room in back then any pther abody of the same year i think?

Try here,

and there is a vendor on ebay selling the 338s for about $65X shipped

Thanks....I had the jd wheels page before but cant find where they have a package deal unless you have to call them, and the ebay guy...directlinewheels, has them for 625 shipped, and those are the staggered set which is what I want.

I may be better off buying tires separately.

dam im just starting to go bonkers now...at the same time Im trying to decide wether I can afford to do a ebay 4wdb conversion, of just do the fronts, and then do I get drop spindles, or stock seeing as we just want to start this out slowly, and enjoy the car....damm decisions!!!...lol

what ever you do leave the stock spindles.

As far as JDwheels, send them an email, they are pretty quick in answering back.

I was looking in buying the 338 18x8F and 18x9.5R for the 72 nova, but apperantly the rear will rub and would need to make a minitub (which i dont feel like it)

jturkey69
02-15-2010, 11:49 AM
ok, I did email jdwheels, and out of curiosity why should I keep the stock spindles? or do you mean stock height? I figured I was just gonna go with a stock replacement spindle with a disc package, and possibly 4wdb, but was just curious i guess.
Thanks for the help!

I am looking at the Boss 338's for my TA. I called the boss headquarters here in Chicago. He gave me: Steve's Discount tires.630-220-6499 is Steve's phone. He gave me a quote on 18x8 and 18x9.5 with Nitto nt05 245/40 and 275/40 for $1319 cash. And that's mounted and balanced.Cash has no tax. He is located in Villa Park,IL Near Chicago.

Thanks taman for the number.

The rears will work the fronts are too tall. 26 is about max for the

ok, would there be a difference in ours being stock height and a 71 cutlass? I was just under the impression that other a body cars had a little less room? I wonder why that guy recommended them...maybe to keep the same tire he suggested(toyo proxes) would you reccomend the245/45 then for the front as thats what most other abodies on here are running...dam, now im gettin confused, and have to get out the calculator..lol

taman...the quote I got was also from a guy in lake villa,il?..lol

no Villa Park. Lake Villa is Far NW of Chicago. Villa park, West. The reason those sizes is price. I want 295/40 in the rear but requires a 10" rim. Price goes way up. No one sells a cheap 18x10 with a 5" backspace. Or a 18x9 with a 4.75 backspace. I want to go with 275/40's in front. Only if the 5" backspace fits in front. Then I can run the 9.5's at all 4 corners. If I can get 295/45's on the rear I will because they fit on a 9.5" rim. My TA is going to be 2.5" to 3" lower than stock in the rear and 3" in the front. My TA is currently at Nastalgic restorations in Island Lake getting a Heidt's subframe and rear 4 link. With everything changing so much, I will wait to see what fits.

I would like to see someone else chime in about the 255/50's up front on the abody as I just found an old thread with a 255/45 in front, on 17's, and in the rear with 285/40.
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26936&highlight=285%2F40

ugh...edit..I just looked it up, and the 255/45 is 27"...so maybe the 255/50 is too big?...dammit...maybe I will have to shop around as the quote I got now from mr wheel deal is 709 for tires, 639 for rims, 178 for shipping, and 40 bux for lugs and valve stems...so....anyone got a used set of wheels and tires for an abody??...LOL

I will check him out as well...thats the third steve that sells wheels...lol

Play around with this a bit, it'll give you a decent visualzation(sp) of the wheels and tire sizes. http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp

I have brakes from an 02 corvette on my 68 camaro with 338s and the caliper does have to be sanded down. I think I can just take the letters off and round off the tops. So that i something to consider. Just barely nicks it. I should do that soon I'm pretty bored anyway. I don't know how other brakes stack up.

jturkey69

Good to know about the brakes, thanks. I think we shouldnt have any issues running a cheap brake set-up for a couple years while we drive and build this car.

255-50-18 is way to tall. Thats a SUV size tire and would look terrible. You need a 255-40 or 245-45 at the tallest. Look at the sizes Damascus just put on his Budniks

jturkey69
02-16-2010, 11:22 AM
the problem was the guy trying to give me a quote with 295 rear tires of the same brand and make. I did find a 255/45/18 for the front so it would match the rear. I also was looking at that thread over on classicolds, I think I was trying to stay in the 12-1300 or so price range with the boss wheels...AND have a decent fat rear tire....I dont think its gonna happen though

jturkey69
02-16-2010, 12:26 PM
here is the calculator im playing with cuz it tells me if there any matching brands of tires, then I look it up and try to find how much they are...now I know what you guys are, or have gone through...im almost tempted to just run whatever brands just to stay in my target price range so I can still do my brakes.....UGH!

If you have to go another a month or two to get exactly what you want then do it. You will be kicking yourself if you don't.

I know your right...is there a general diameter I want to be in?...25-26"?
245/40
285/35
both very close in sizing.
ive seen all these numbers posted on here on different cars, but damm is this frustrating..:enguard: I guess I may have to wait until the car is done at the paint shop and see the total bill, then get my brakes for the front at least..then make a decision. Its not that I dont have the money, I just wanted to stay in that target range if possible since this is supposed to be a budget build concept.

do you guys think these sizes will be good?
245/40/18...25.7 overall...3.85 sidewall height
285/35/18...25.8 overall...3.92 sidewall height
I can get them in Nitto nt555 for 639

or
245/45/18
295/45/18
nitto nt555 for 709

or a suggestion that has matching brand tires front and rear for a decent price? Or is the Nitto nt555 for 639 a good deal to work with..the car is mainly for looks this year, and being daily driven.

Is there anyway to know, other than trying out, if your calipers are going to hit the rims. I will have Wilwood 12.19" rotors with 6 piston calipers. I am on a tight budget, so I am looking at the 338's. Great price and a nice looking rim. Not that I wouldn't love a set of Forgelines.

You could run a 275/40/18 on the front with the 295/45/18 on the rear. That will give you the max tire width up front and keep the height in check and you can get them in a NT555 http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/tires/nitto/size/bySize.do?cs=275&ar=40&rd=18 The 275/40 is the same height as the 245/45

I didnt think about that...but I am still trying to keep within somewhat of a budget so I can do my brakes as well, plus I am considering getting drop springs...although that is still up in the air. What sizes are you runnin on your Bu'? Im am willing to hear from any and all a-body owners that are willing to think on a budget...we will go further every year as I plan to document how to do this on a budget with prices per year on what I spend. See I was injured, then laid off from Kohler Company, so my wife went to work bartending, and lucked out by getting a job at The Elks Lodge here in Sheboygan...in 4 months she was promoted to operations manager, so she said I have to play Mr. Mom to our combined 6 kids now while she works...so this will be a project so to speak on how to do it the long way...lol

I bought my Boss wheels off Ebay last year for $700 shipped but they are the 304's i think. I boght my G-Force Sports from Tirerack. At the time I bought two tires at a time because I wasn't sure if I could fit 275/40-18's all around. The first two tires cost me $139 each. the second two cost $159 each. But it sounds lke you want bigger than 275/40's and I think that is as large as the G-Force sports go in 18's. But they are a great tire esspecially for the price.

jturkey69
02-17-2010, 12:16 AM
Hey stickman..nice to see you here from the impala and wagon forums...I think its more what will fit best for price, and user friendly daily drive ability. I think most companies think that when a muscle car era car emails for wheels and tires, they confuse them with the lifted donk/bubble/box crowd...nothing wrong with that..but we are after the pro-touring-poser look for now..lol

Here is another wheel option to consider.
https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64325

I too was considering the boss 338 wheel on my 65 cutlass but I need a 5.25 in back space to put a 8 inch wide tire on all 4. These are only available up to a 17 inch dia. I plan to run a 255/45/17 on all 4 wheels. They are 26.03 tall x 10.03 wide. I currently run a 225/60/16 which is 26.62 tall and 8.85 wide. I like a tire to totally fill up the fender well. Lord knows these olds have huge openings just narrow. My car is lowered 2 inches in front and has ccp disc on all 4's. The disk push the front out about half inch more than the drums did. To run the boss I would have to tub my front inner fenders.

not sure because a few 18" don't clear 6-pistons because of the design of spokes...

here's Kore3's C06 6-piston caliper fitment template you can print and test on the wheel:

Once I get the wheels at the end of this week, I will print out all the template that Tobin has on his website and test fit them and post up the results.

Hopefully it will help other people with fitment issues. I am basically doing a C6 brake setup, I have everything I need, except my MC and brake lines.

From what I spoke with Tobin, I might need a .25" spacer at the rear to clear the shocks and caliper. We shall see this weekend :)
