View Full Version : Project Lethal Induction

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to introduce you all to my new project ‘Lethal Induction’, I found this car on ebay about 5 months ago and was basiclly a Pro Street/Drag Car for a ridiculously low price. In fact the price was so low I thought it was a scam from the start. And because the car was 2000 miles away I had no way to see if this was a real deal.
Luckily my best friends dad who is a gear head lived about 20 miles from the car and was able to go and inspect the car for me. I knew the car being from Georgia it would have rust, but I basically bought the car for the engine. A full race prepped 420 cubic inch SBC with Callies Stealth Crank, Crower Rods, J&E Pistons, Brodix Heads with Titanium Valves and a custom ground Solid Roller cam making 750HP at the flywheel.
I have to say I was very nervous from the start, but the car was what the seller stated and now I have some great pieces to start my new project with. And as it turns out the car was originally from califorina so there wasn’t as much rust as I expected (but we will see after the body is media blasted)
Ben Hermance did an awesome job visualizing my project, and my hat goes off to him for his hard work on this.
Current plans call for adding fuel injection to the 420 small block with a much more street-able camshaft and lower stall converter, I am still on the fence for which EFI system I am going to use and am looking for some input on the project so feel free to speak up and give me some input.
I have almost finished tearing the car apart and will be sending it off to be media blasted in the next few weeks, once I get it back from being stripped I will be passing the car off to a local metal fabricator who has done a number of cars for a buddy of mine and his work is top notch to put his magic touches on the car.
While the body is off I will be taking the frame and boxing in the frame rails and adding the suspension (DSE), brakes (wilwood 13 inch rotors) and the rack and pinion.
I will post up some more info as I nail down all the details.

The rendering looks great. I would think about not putting the SS on the back. It sticks out and is the only badge on the car which only makes it stick out more. maybe paint it black or gray to help hide it. Regardless, welcome and keep adding pictures. We love pictures. Good luck.
For EFI, I like adapting the factory LSx PCM. You can do so cheaply compared to buying a FAST system if you're willing to do some things yourself and buy parts used. None of this scares me so that's why I like using it. It's a very good system and so is the FAST system.

Ya, the SS emblem in the rendering will more than likely not get put on the car, Ben had to work with some existing photos of another Chevelle for my project and I missed asking him to remove it. there will be no emblems on the car. I Might however be doing something in the side stripe. but wont make any decisions until i get primer on the car.

very nice project! rendering looks good - love the color but I'm kinda biased :twothumbs
You could maybe paint on the SS emblems. Ghost them even. I think that would be subtle but good.

So I made a little progress this weekend, been real busy and havent had much time in the last couple of weeks to really do anything. but I managed to finally pull the body off the frame and should be dropping it off to be stripped later this week.

I was suprised how easily the body came off, had no issues with rusted/busted bolts which is a plus in my book. so hopefully in a few weeks I should have the shell back and in primer..

I have a large amount of parts from the car, that i wont be using in the new build for sale, if anyone is interested the list is here http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2765950#post2765950

Well I didnt get the car off to get media blasted yet, because I realized when I got it back I was going to have to get my rotisserie built so I could shoot some primer on it. so I started building a rotisserie.
I know I could have bought one, but I wanted to save a few bucks and needed to break in the new welder and get some practice doing mig welding. since its been about 20 years since I have really done any welding.
so here's a few pics of the build so far, should have most of it finished by this weekend.

I am curious who is going to do the metal fab for you. I am looking for a metal fab guy to do some work for my nova. Do you know anyone in the area that does good work
ChevelleNV
03-19-2010, 08:09 AM
what kinda fab work you looking to have done for your nova?
I was refereed to a guy up in Gardnerville, but after seeing his shop I am a little leary. I may just end up just teaching myself to do most of the work I need on mine.
I did some fab work years ago, so I know a few techniques for doing aluminum work just never really did any sheet metal work. (Used to build sheet metal manifolds for pro stock/pro mod cars)

well I got some feelers out for someone to do some fab work, if I find anyone worth a dam and is not pricing his work out the roof Ill let you know.
as for the interior I haven't made any plans set in stone yet, since The car had new interior in it when I got it. I'm gonna try and sell what I have and do something nice and custom.

As much as I would love to say ya, not a whole lot has happened in the last two months. been saving some money and collecting parts. I have made arrangements for a really good body man to to all the metal work on the body, but he says he wont touch the body until its back on the frame so two weeks ago I pushed the body out into the shed and moved the frame inside and started working on that.
I sand blasted part of the frame so I can get it boxed and putting in some additional material to stiffen the frame. here's a couple of teaser pics for the picture whores.

In two weeks I will be tearing out all the old suspension, and should have the cash i need to buy all the new suspension in about a month and a half. the plan is to have the chassis all finished by November and have the body sitting back on the frame. I have already purchased all the new sheet metal i need to have the body finished and just need to get it over to my body guy to finish it up.
I have decided to air bag the chassis with Ridetech suspension and put willwood brakes on it. I will try and keep up with the updates.

I haven't nailed down all the specs for the engine yet, but the plan is to drop the compression a little, change the camshaft and put a sheet metal fuel injected manifold on it. once i have the body back on the frame and i send it off to my Buddie who is doing the body work I'm going to focus on the engine and trans and figure out all the details

Any thought to drilling an access hole on the botom of the frame and putting a nut on the back side of your sway bar mounts?
Not a bad Idea.....Now that i think about it, if I were to put a small slot in the side of the frame next to were the bolt is. I could get a wrench in the with a nut on it and a lock washer.
Thanks for the Idea.....
HOSTILETAKEOVER
02-01-2011, 03:00 PM
From a structural integrity standpoint, a hole in the botom may or may not be better? Im sure someone with engineering knowledge may chime in. I was thinking a round hole would let you use a socket and extension to push a nut and lock washer (held with a little glue or tape) up to the bottom of the bolt.
ChevelleNV
02-01-2011, 03:33 PM
Well if you look at the frame, the factory already has numerous holes and slots everywhere. I dont think one additional slot about a 1/2 wide by 3/8 tall would make any real difference in the structural integrity of the frame.

I will be Ordering my strange S-60 rear end next Friday so in a few weeks I will hopefully have all the suspension on and can start looking at brake line/fuel line routing.

Well there hasn't been a lot of progress other than I am now starting to do a rough assembly of the chassis. so I can re-check clearances between the body and chassis. I am still waiting on the strange rear end to show up so I can assemble the rear suspension. but it wont be here till after the 25th when it scheduled to ship, hopefully the ship it sooner.
I don't know how many of you actually noticed I had cut out all the additional frame bracing I had done earlier in the project, I just wasn't happy with the way it turned out. 04-20-2011, 06:34 AM
Well since I am waiting on my axles to come back from Strange I started working on brake and fuel lines. and since the frame was boxed none of the factory lines would fit. I originally started to build the fuel line using the 'Easybend' stuff, it does bend easy but try getting a straight piece is not gonna happen.
After many failed attempts with the easybend material I bought a couple of 5" 3/8 fuel line pieces from the local NAPA store and busted out the bender tool to see what I could come up with. I am curious what everyone thinks about running a fuel line that is not 1 piece running to the back of the car. I would love to have something that runs all the way but I cant find a long enough piece of straight materiel in this area that would reach the full length of the car. so I decided to put a few bulkheads down the frame rail that I can tie into.
Here is one of the more complicated pieces 9 bends...and one of the bulkheads I will be connecting too.

Well finally making some progress after taking a few steps backwards. You will notice I no longer have the chassis mods that I made earlier in the year.
I made the decision to not alter the frame because I was uncomfortable with how much I was gonna have to cut up the body to make it fit. SO I removed it all including the boxing plates I put in.
So I should have the chassis together In a week or so, bout a Lee 670 Gearbox and got all new steering components. Got the rear end painted and just tonight finished painting the frame.
ChevelleNV
09-07-2011, 06:05 AM
So I started to run my hard lines for the airbags, decided to use the original opening in the body for the tank breather to house my air manifold going into the trunk. so far I have the two lines that go towards the front of the car. these will be connected by a small -3 braided line to the hard lines I run down the frame channel up to the front suspension.

What part of your frame modifications were going to cause you to have to cut the body? I can't imagine that the boxed frame would have caused any problems, and it seems like many people have put in similar frame stiffening bars without cutting up their bodies.
ChevelleNV
09-08-2011, 02:34 PM
Well if you see in the pictures the bars toward the back of the frame in front of where the lower control arms connects to the frame (picture 3 in post #72). I was gonna have to cut out part of the floor board where the rear passengers feet would be to accommodate the bars and the rear cross-member.
Now If I had spent a lot more time measuring and getting the bars in just the right spot. they could be fit under the floorboard without an issue. but I just got frustrated that I was gonna have to cut them out and re-do them to get them right. And I really didn't want to have to start all over. I was already in the hole for a lot of time and materials. But I did learn something from this and will take what I learned and use it on the next car I build.

Looking good! Alot of hard work you have been putting into this car. My buddy just ordered 2 of those MPI kits for our cars (his '67 & my '70) and should be getting them next week. We have all the tools to build this our selfs but time we don't have so for the price we could not look away from the MPI kit. I have a question, what is your thoughts or what are you going with for cab mounts?
We are not too far from each other so I hope I get to run into your car one day in person, going to really nice.

Nick, those bars on my frame were not from the MPI kit, They just happen to look similar. and I ended up cutting my bars out and not using them. Just wasn't happy with the way it came out and the mods I was gonna have to make to the floor pan to accommodate the bars and rear cross member

Looking good, keep at it! The bar that braces the upper shock mount is that available separately or with the complete kit. Not putting air on my '71 but like the idea of bracing the mounts.

The upper bar is from ABC performance, I talked them into selling it to me separateley. (its part of there coil over conversion kit) http://abcperformance.net/suspension.html It also came with some upper coil over brackets which I ended up not using, and sold them to another member here

Well I haven't made any updates in a while, been real busy with work and life in general. But I did sell my 407 SBC and now have the money for my LSX build. yesterday I ordered a LSX Tall Deck Bowtie block, a set of L92 heads, DBW Throttle body and Manifold to build my 4.060 x 4.250 440 C.I. LSX.

So I've been building my 72 chevelle for 2 years now and am almost ready for paint. I've been doing the whole project out of my head but finally broke down and decided to get a rendering done to see what my stripe idea will look like before I commit. So then my renderer sends me a pic of your car... Almost exactly what I was planning but with red stripes! Lol guess its back to the drawing board for me! Lol... Killer build!

any updates
Well Yes and no, mostly getting pieces and parts together for this summer when I plan to attack this thing with a vengeance and get it put together. I am waiting on my IRS refund and my year end bonus from work. which should give me enough funds to get most all the major pieces I still need to buy. (Transmission, Speartech Electronics, Ridetech airpod) and then this summer I get another bonus at work which should buy the left over stuff like my ISIS electronics and the Vintage air and a few other misc. items I still need. So hopefully by the end of the year this thing will be getting really close to being done. :)
I have finished the frame, and all the suspension is installed, I need to get my body guy over to the shop and have him fix a few holes in the floorboards and then I can put the body back on to test fit the trans tunnel and make sure I don't have to modify it. if that the case then I will be putting the body back on the rotisserie and painting the underside of the car and putting the body back on the frame for good in a month or so.... (crossing fingers)

Well I know I haven't made any updates in a while, but there has been some progress.
Just in the last several weeks I have ordered my 4L60E Trans and convertor, Speartech Harness, Steering Column from Jim aka birdsandbowties, Ricks/Vaporwox fuel tank, and some of the pieces for my ram air...
Also Made a major decision to change the car to a 70, so I am swapping the front end for a 70 clip and installing 70 bumpers. (I like the 70 a lot more, and it allows me to convert the two inner headlights to ram air for the LSX engine).
I have also got the floor pan fixed (there were some rust issues, which are now no-more) and have started plumbing the chassis for the hard air lines for the air bags and need to run the fuel line and brake line to the rear of the car. once that's done. I can shoot some paint on the bottom of the car and put the body back on for good.... I love progress

I thought long and hard about the whole fuel issue, considered building my own tank with the vaporworx pump and pickups, considered running a rock valley, or a modified stock tank with a surge pump. but after many hours of contemplating all the pros and cons, I finally made the decision to just fork up the cash and buy a Ricks/Vaporworx tank. I have to say after seeing this thing in person I am happy to say I fell I made the right decision. this is one of the nicest custom pieces I have ever laid my eyes on.

Well got to work on the car a little today, bent up and installed the two front hard airlines I am running down the frame rail to the trunk for the airbags. also started bending up the rear brake line and fuel line I am going to run down the drivers side since LS engines have the fuel inlet on the drivers side of the manifold.

Wow, just realized I haven't posted an update on here in forever. For those of you really interested in following the build. I
post regular updates on my blog http://www.chevellenv.com there a are lot more pictures and details on whats is currently going on
with the car.
A lot has happened in the past few months, so I will try and get everyone up to speed.
Engine ----
Spent some time getting faceplate's made up for the tall deck, still need to do some finish work and do a machine port
match, should be doing this in the next few weeks
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/IMG_0773-1.jpg
Bought a complete 70 front clip for the Chevelle, made the decision I like the 70 model better, so I am going to convert it
over to a 70. Also picked up a number of pieces I still need, like a complete power window kit for half of what they
normally go for on ebay.

The car is now also been in the body shop for some much needed TLC. I pick it up tomorrow and bring it back to my shop for
a few months while i recover financially for the work I had done. Both rear quarters are now fixed and had a custom
firewall built along with a number of small fixes need. still need to have some more work done to her. but my wallets empty
now and need some time for it to re-fill

A few weeks ago I tested out a number of different colors for the car by shooting the hood off my old Nova and made a final
decision on the color.
And the winner is Chrysler Arabian Grey with DCU2060 Flat Clear....... The picture doesn't really do the color justice,
you'll just have to see it in person next year.

Well made some progress today now that I have the car back from the body shop for now. It needs to go back but I need some time to save up some more money to pay for the work still needed. but that gives me time to start fitting things up so today I slapped the heads on the block with the manifold and got the scribed for porting which I will take them over to my buddy's machine shop next week to throw them up on the mill and get the machine porting done. while I had the heads on the block I went ahead and bolted up my serpentine drive system which is gonna need some tweaking since its for a standard deck block. which I was quite surprised I only have to build 2 small pieces to offset a couple bolt holes. and while I was this far I went ahead and just threw on the valve covers and a few other pieces just to see it all sitting there....
And now for the LSX porn......

Well not a lot of progress has happened, bought a new car so it kind of tapped me financially. but I have not stopped working on the car. got the engine up on the engine stand and started figguring out some things. like where to mount my dry sump pump, and built the steam vent tubes. so here's a little eye candy for you all just need to finish up one small braided hose to connect the two sides together under the throttle body.

Yes, the little birdie is correct.... Getting ready to weld in the front mounts for the rear end tomorrow.. Been meaning to start a 2.0 thread since the car has had a total project change and I have been neglecting this thread. there is some more recent info on my blog @ http://chevellenv.com/
along with the IRS are a lot of other changes as well, cantilever coil overs, ZL1 Supercharger, ZL1 front and rear brakes, Chicane Mod.... just to name a few

What was your stock rear track width? Close to the 64" WMS to WMS? We're doing one in my 73 Camaro :) It's mostly in.
Working on adjustable arms to pull in the track width a bit, would like to have a bit of dish on my rear wheels. 2" would stellar.
Bought all the DSE stuff for it, but no one makes an adjustable upper rear arm that I can find, anyway.

I don't remember off the top off my head what the stock track width was, but the IRS is stock width... I didn't change it
