cam selection?

I currently have a 383 that I purchased through a friend. The internals are unknown. The problem I'm having seems to be that the solid lifter cam is too large. The engine made ok power 323hp at the wheels 330tq, but the idle is pretty radical and the engine makes poor vacuum.
The things I do know are that it probably has high compression 10:1 at least what I was told and it will ping as I dial in more advance. It has ported 69 corvette iron heads. I am looking for a cam that will provide good power with better torq. and idle relatively smoothly and have enough vacuum for power brakes. I am thinking theh comp cams XE 262 218/224dur @0.50 110deg. lobe sep, but I am worried that the current cam is bleeding off compression and this cam might be too tight? any recommendations?

That will be way to small. Something around 230@50 will still be mild in a big inch small block like yours. As far as heads, those will work to 400HP or so, then you need to step up to aftermarket heads. Which ones, really does not make much difference as pretty much all the manufacturers heads flow the same in lower dollar heads.
I have good luck with Drat Pro 1s for around $1000 or so. 200CC would be fine for a mild 383.

Do you think I will still have ok vacuum? I'm not sure how much I need for the power brakes.
