Hi Guys,
I'm still piecing together engine components for my Carbed 383 build in which I will be adding a Pro Charger...
I've really got my eyes set on AFR's 210cc Small Block Chevy heads... but I'm not sure if I should go with the 220cc or lean towards a set of Dart heads, etc...
I'd like to hear of your experiences and of different heads you've used...
Thanks,
TIM

I've got another question for you guys to ponder...
I've got a set of Dynomax Ceramic Coated Full Length Headers lying around that I may put on this motor in efforts to save $ from buying another set... But the primaries on these headers are only 1 5/8" where as the 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 would be ideal...
I was curious as to what types of losses I might expect with the smaller primaries but after reading this Tech article put out by Hot Rod/Car Craft Magazine, I don't see too much of a loss in HP ... and see a gain in TQ at low end with using the smaller primaries... This was on a 500+ hp motor...
I'm not sure if this number would be amplified with the blower motor that I'm going with? Any experience with this type of issue?
Here's the link to the Tech article that I'm referring to:

Scroll down until you reach "The Big Tube Test"
Thanks,

We have been using pro-action exclusivley since trying a set about a year ago. I don't think you will find a better head builder, these things take the 800+HP mountain motors with pro-chargers all day.

I don't know a lot about the ProAction Heads...
I found this link but not much else...

They appear to be located in New Zealand
Are they Pricey?

The biggest trick with a supercharged engine is to find a set of heads with a good exhaust port. The intake side is going to flow no matter what, the supercharger will force the air through, so the exhaust flow becomes much more critical.
The AFR heads are nice no doubt. I would also consider the Edelbrock Victor Jr cylinder heads due to their massive exhaust port.
Another choice would be (if you have some serious $$) www.allprocylinderheads.com these guys are the absolute kings of big flow cylinder heads, nothing better anywhere.
Just FYI Pro Action went out of business

That's the place Tim. Not any more pricey then AFR or Dart. They build just about any configuration imaginable.

We were going to get some of the New Zealand heads but cant find any. The all pro head are defiantly $$$ I think the heads that we want are something like $17K Or you can just have chapman make you some.

Correction: The head that we are going to get are from Chapman but are very similar to the New Zealand heads. They are not $17K but $10 and that is with valves, springs, and some other stuff, not the rocker arms. Oh and they are kinda a spec Trans Am race head big ports, small runners. This is going on a 250 size motor

The Edelbrock Victor Jr.'s would be nice for the price... Are these similar to what you're referring to???

Thanks guys,

Edelbrock sells one set bare with valves, that is the way I would go. That way you can really match your valvetrain up properly.
The link on Edelbrocks website http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/raceheadsbchev.html
I would look at part 77649 for your application

I don't know how much HP you want to make, or what your budget is. I would buy inexpensive heads like pro 1s and let the supercharger do it's work. The supercharger really covers up most sins wheather it be poor intake, heads, exhaust. Then spend the saved money towards FI.
Now if you are building a class racer and the last 2% of horsepower is critical, that is a different story. I would be more concerned with driveability.

Thanks guys...
I'm definitly not looking for that last 2% of Horsepower...but do want a 700-800 Horsepower Best with about 10-12 lbs. of boost... With forged internals, correct compression and the right combination... I would think the D-1SC procharger would get me to my goal... wouldn't it? If I had to, I could always add the intercooler...but haven't planned on it...
Thanks again guys for all the great info...

CamcoJB's car made that much power with a 406 - I think you 383 should be able to get there.
We need to be very careful when selecting the camshaft in this application... superchargers do not work well with a lot of overlap.

if you can squeeze 500 out of it N/A with a blower friendly cam (which should not be to hard) it will see 700 @ 10LBS no problem.

Sweet...
You Guys have any suggestions on the blower friendly cam ...

In general you need to keep Lobe seperation very wide, in the 114-116 range. This will cut down on overlap. Do not go nuts with the duration.
Overlap is the enemy for boosted engines, the more time the exhaust & intake are open simataniously the most boost gets blown down the headers.
Crower has a series of EFI/Blower cams that are very good for applications like this.
I would be looking at something around 240/250@050 114 LS with ~.570 lift
Solid roller of course
I see the Crower 00550 is just about perfect. (247/255@050 114 LS .548/.573 )

Thanks for the info on the cam...
I've got a Crower in my current 383 and have loved everything about it...
