OK, everyone has asked for one. After my trip out I think we have found a location to have one hellofa event.
Now is the time to step up and commit to being there if we can pull it off. No money needed but I do need to know if we are talking 10 guys or 100 cars. I am thinking sometime in late summer, probably August. If you can be there, participating to some degree, chime in to this thread. Please, chime in only if you can come, I don't need to hear that you would be there if you had a battery or something. We will have spectator areas too so all that is good, but I need a head count on who could come and spend $75 or $100 to make an event happen out here.

I'm in Bill,,,,, I'll check in with a couple of my cars for minimum at least. This could make for a great fellow "Road Rat" qualifier,,,, couldn't you just see a large contingent of eastern and mid-west cars following the Rat Pack accross America,,,, man that would be a sight!!!!

Nick, Steve and Keith, you ready guys ready to do some serious long haul reviews of some pro-touring rides????? I have a certain White 72RS that would love to break in a new little 556 in an across America run and I'm sure there are a few other members her that would love to step up with there rides too....

Couldn't you just see the head line "Trans America cars" we know your quick, but can you last ..... An up close account of Pro-touring rides that can long haul just as comfortably as carving cones in the Auto cross LOL......

Yea, we're going to see if we can make this happen. My management at the magazine seemed up to the idea.

El Toro would be a great spot. I picture a smaller "tight" autocross combined with a larger "fast" autocross. I've seen cars hit 90 mph at autocrosses there since there's so much room.

Here's an example of a 2.2 MILE autocross they do there... yea, 2.2 FREAKING MILES! lol

Maybe that will hush up the "35mph in a Walmart parking lot" crowd.. ;)

I have been in airplanes and airports all day so just now getting back online. Still not home, volunteered for a bump, gotta love free airline tickets for my next trip...haha
Anyway, if we can work out the details, we will do this. Yall tell me about the heat, and if it will be too hot then?? I think we want to do something around the time some of the vendors will be out west for this year then probably do another event next January or Febuary. Seems not much is going on in the winter, and man is the weather nice out there this time of year...

Can't be there, but kind of unfortunate that MCAS Tustin isn't available. Has a racing pedigree (Tustin Thunder Vintage races in the early 90's, and two historic buildings on site ( the blimp hangers are some of the largest wooden structures on the west coast).

During the vintage races there in the 90's (while it was still an operational base), and A/Sedan went off into the helicopter washing pit, and fired the fountains used to wash helicopters before storing them away in the blimp hangers

CarlC
01-31-2010, 08:09 PM
According to historical data the average for the first week in Sept. is 77* for John Wayne airport. Record high around 100*. It will be a little warmer since the MCAS is bit farther inland, but not much.

Bad date..

1. the Holley event is then..

2. too close to RTTH

August sometime would be better.. we might want to coincide it with our Super Chevy mfg deal since the companies will already be out here with thier cars.

Bill, Labor day weekend holds a pretty big show at the OC Fairgrounds during that time, and have every year for the past 12 I believe. It pulls quite a few of the vendors out this way (Hotchkins, Global West, Driverz Inc, Edelbrock, etc)---having never been to a RTTH event, I wasn't sure if it is a large vendor & spectator deal or not. I went last year to the Labor Day show since they had an Auto X--but would gladly give it up for a West Coast event with the PT community.

I am in for a west coast RTTH. Isn't the Super Chevy Suspension Shootout right at the same time frame? There is the option of going for a mid/later October date or even a date after Optima Challange so more cars from all over would be in the area. I would think a date between mid Oct to mid Novermber might be a better choice given what is going on in the area around that time. Just my .02

Bill I want to say thanks for thinking of us west coasters, I have wanted to go to RTTH but it is right before SEMA and I just have a plateful right then. I believe we can pull a good crowd that can put on a great show that rivials what the east coast offers. There is a group of us here that chomp at the bit every chance for an open track event, so there is a desire. Now it is up to us here on this coast to drum up the people......Carl, Mike, Larry and the rest of us who have been at the open track events need to yell from the mountain tops that we have a great chance here.

For the record I have no issue with an August date, just wanted to throw another option out there.

It usually is somewhere between mid 70's and high 90's in early September around El Toro but I don't know that your going to do much better unless you did go with a later date which doesn't mean that it will not still be hot. Those of us out here are used to the temps, that would not slow us down one little bit, heck we go to places like Buttonwillow and Willow Springs in the summer where it is over 100.

Bill...as I said on the phone the other night...we are in. ALL the way in with cars and resources. I had no idea that El Toro was a remote possibility for a public event. Its a great facility.
Although I woud LOVE the scheduling of the event to be convenient for us going to Pleasanton and some other west coast show, its more important to accmmodate the participants. We will come at nearly anytime. I will say that June and early July are probably the most congested for scheduling.
Its too late to put something together for this year, but Goodguys has 3 events on the west coast in the spring. MAybe you could slip something in there?

We are gonna' have to come up with our own governing body to plan , schedule , and regulate all these events.

We could end up with a professional governing body with paid employees , and a president , etc ..

RTTHs is sort of the grand daddy of these events, so certainly we plan to keep it strong. As soon as we have a date nailed down for this West Coast event, I will work on the proper name for it. Maybe RTTC, as in Run To The Coast? I would love to do a canyon run as part of the event also. Best part about El Toro is you can get to PCH or Silverado Canyon in about 15 minutes. Great for guys looking to do a little canyon run or cruise PCH. As far as weather goes, I grew up in El Toro, from July to the end of September it is hot. Plan on low 90's and up.

Hell this California we are talking about. 70 degrees all the time or some crap like that I read in some communist promotion. Why not make it a late fall early spring event????

It's cooler and most everyone who like's cars really is looking for a car event to attend anyway. If nothing else the East Coast crowd is looking for a reason to leave the freezer they call the midwest and northeast. You will also have little to NO competition from competing events.

How about late February 2011? Plenty of time for planning!

Steve1968LS2

Guys, just a short update. We have nailed down the date we think....
The big hurdle right now is the required insurance for the event. We think we have that handled also. I will let everyone know the details as soon as we nail them down.
Thanks so much for all the response to this thread. I have received several inquires about vendors/sponsors. We will need all those we can get and I will be in touch with those that have asked once we have the details ironed out. More than likely we will be doing a two day event, with a limit of 80 cars. I will give those that said they wanted to play here and on L-G first shot of getting in.

Thanks again guys, more soon.

Are there classes? Like in Solo2? How is it setup? I never paid much attention to the RTTH events since they're on the wrong side of the country.... till now it seems.

Nevermind, I found the rules here: https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46169

Seems pretty basic... I might have to unleash the Pontiac body roll monster out there. I'll need different tires though... factory Bridgestone Potenzas have a TW of 120.

Nooooooo! Kumho Ecsta XS's are below 200 with their 180 rating . . . shoot. That leaves me with the option of runing Radial TA's or maybe I'll just bring out my fox body (which could serve as a good benchmark as it is bone stock ignoring the front rotors and pads.)

Can I run 6 tires? I think it evens out with the 340tw! It would help with my understeer...

Registration coming ASAP.
First come first serve. we will be running a Vendor and Media class on Friday, plus about 30 participants. Then 40 or so on Saturday. Two day event guys, you pick which day you want to run. Sadly, the cost will be $150 per car, because of the cost of insurance in Ca. but still a cheap event. Lunch served both days. Cruise on Thursday. Winners and "King of the Coast" announced on Saturday.

More coming, stay tuned.

Ridetech is the official sponsor of the El Toro Autocross. Bret and crew have been doing autocross events across the country with GoodGuys so no one does it better or has more experience, thanks guys for the support.

Baer Brakes has stepped up and is sponsoring the Baer Speed Stop Challenge. This will be their version of 0-60-0 but with a twist. Sorry, but I will not announce the twist until April 2. Every day the news gets better and more sponsors are calling and joining in on the fun.

Tomorrow I will let everyone know about two other MAJOR sponsor announcements, stay tuned.

This is so exciting. Forgeline and GP SUPERSTORE have teamed up for one great door prize. For the price of entry fee, now everyone (except vendors) will be eligible for a FREE set of Forgelines. This is a HUGE door prize guys, one of the most expensive ones I have given away. This is worth the price to play even if you didn't come...haha

Thanks so much to both Forgeline-now the official wheel company of the event and to Frank for, as always supporting these events. Without great sponsors, we just couldn't do these events.

It looks like we're NOT getting that February glut of rain we were promised and I'm so hoping that April isn't going to be a wet month instead.

Fingers are being crossed and check www.accuweather.com (http://www.accuweather.com) for daily forecasts for the wet stuff. Those street tires may be very welcomed and racing in the rain is fun ...

Just heard that my RHS block and everything will ship in the next couple of days.. except the crank which is two weeks out. Still, I can build the engine in three days, dyno it in one and drop it in and hook it up in three.

All i'm trying to do is the get the G/bar and sway bar on the car---it's still a fight---you've got the whole car to put back together right? That's a pretty stout list also----lucky for us we have a month or so.

I got the G-Bar kit and sway bar in, converted the bars to heim joints for adjustability--now I have to start playing around with the ride height, shock settings, sway bar position, realignment, tire pressures, etc---man, this is gonna be fun---hope the car makes it through all of this----

You going to try out the suspension set up before RTTC? I feel comfortable in my settings because of the time I have on the car right now.

At least my list may look long but currently the rear axle is at a friends just waiting to be put together. The seats are on order, will order the sliders tomorrow. Harness bar is the only one that concerns me currently, don't how I am going to get it bent quite yet. Once the bar is in then the harness is simple. So I may have the time to get the Track 4's on the car in a month.

That's the spirit look at Mary for inspiration..... Mary has a great car but it doesn't have the fanciest latest greatest 4 link or 3 link suspension and her motor is way under many of the so called fast cars but she consistently kicks all of our a$$es for the most part.... (Hey Mary, that is a compliment by the way and I'm not picking on your car here)... It's not what you got, it's how you use what you have.

The best part is Mary is a super fantastic gal that will gladly show you things and help you do the best with your car....Really that kind of spirit is what makes these events the best fun you'll have on 4 wheels period!!!!

Agreed.

At events like this and at track days, the norm is to help one another. Nobody else will pass judgement on the worthiness of the car. But, if you would like, the veterans will be happy to lend a hand, offer advice, and in general try to make the learning curve a lot easier.

Bring the car, drive it, and have some fun. That's what the car is for.

Absolutely! I met Mary at the Del Mar event and that's exactly what she did. Actually, there are a lot of people that own these types of cars that have that same spirit of friendship and enthusiam, and that's the exact reason I want to be there. My car was not built to be competitive and never will be. I just want to be there to have a great time and meet up with some great people and see some kickass cars. If the car breaks, so be it, I'll tow the damn thing home and fix it.

By the way, your WarPath project is of HUGE interest to me. If I ever do decide to build a competitive track car, it would be a 73 Trans Am. I had one in college just like your white one. I miss the hell out of it. Thank you for initiating such a build. I look forward to learning a lot from it.

Thanks Chris, we're all learning as we go and I've been blessed with the good fortune of being in a position to build this car and have had "so many people" offer assistance and professional advise that I can't begin to say thank you enough.....

Look me up while out at the RTTC and we'll try to lay down a beating on the 73TA together,,, I like your spirit and look forward to meeting you out there at the event....

A worthy car is the one getting a workout on track......and we are here to help all who show up. If nothing else get a ride in your own car with Mary (the destroyer) behind the wheel, then you can see what all the hard work you put into your car means.

I got a report on the rear axle tonight, it set up well and will be finalized tomorrow. The seats showed up on Monday and I put the last order into summit for the harness, gear oil, and seat tracks. Material for the harness bar should be here in the next few days, where I can drive it over to GRM for bending. Ordered the Track 4's from Baer (this is getting expensive....) and now comes the fun part where the boxes start showing up. Then it is all sweat, blood, and time.

Sooo can we get a finalized itinerary of the weekend?

When does it start on Saturday?
What's first 0-60-0, Autox, Road Course?
How is the day going to progress?
What/Where is Sunday's cruise?
Some idea on what the Scoring/Rules/Safety requirements will be since the site doesn't say?

Maybe a list of all those who have signed up? I know a lot of people said they were interested, just like to see who to expect out there for the party. :)

Just trying to get an idea of what's going on, trying to explain what will be happening that weekend to some folks and I can't give them a straight answer on how it'll pan out.
