Hey guys, I have really enjoyed the forum so far. I check the project updates every day. I am a college student studying mechanical engineering in Minnesota. I restored a 67 coupe with my dad when I was in middle school and it serves daily driver duty in the summer when I am not living in Minneapolis. It was built on an a sub $5000 budget with a ton of junkyard parts. I am just finishing up a 74 Bronco with a Cummins for my year round DD. I am already planning another crazy mustang project using two really rusted out 65 coupes my dad has had in the barn for 10 years and a 96 Thunderbird floorpan. Which leads me to a question that has been bugging me for a while. Do any of you guys autocross your cars in sanctioned events? All of the autocross events in my area follow SCCA classification rules. What class would an old mustang body with a turbo 4.6 and full custom suspension compete in? As far as I can tell moving the suspension pick up points would exempt you from the Street Modified and Street Touring classes, switching from OHV to DOHC exempts you from Prepped C and the Modified class seems to be made up of sub 2000 lb cars.

Anyways I just wanted to introduce myself and let everyone know how much I enjoy reading their project updates and tech discussion.

And here is a shot of the Mustang for good measure.

Sounds like fun projects you've got. As for the auto-x classification question, you'll likely be in the Street Modified category and up against some very competitive and dedicated cars. If you're seriously worried about being competitive in that class, I dare say you'll probably need to alter your plans a bit. A turbo 4.6 is awfully heavy and you won't be able to take advantage of its assets on most auto-x courses... you'll simply run out of track before the 4.6 hits its stride. And the fact of the matter is there are a ton of way serious, very fast, brutally quick little Miatas, Lotus, etc. out there that pull FTD any given weekend... put a great driver in a great car and that's what happens.

That said, I say do what you want and let the chips (and classes and rules) fall where they may. Auto-x is a ton of fun in just about any car!
