I am making a mold of my 67-69 Firebird / Camaro 4 speed console. Here it is covered in orange tooling gelcoat.

Going to be carbon fiber.

Thats cool! Looks like someone has been really busy!

nice but..... the resin layer seems to thick. you should invest in a small vacuum pump and make some really nice parts with low resin to fiber content and cut the weight in half and they will come out way more BLACK- just my humble opinion

Some more pics of the console after a few coats of clear and sanded with 220 grit sand paper. I just wiped it down with wax and grease remover and it has a little sheen.

in order to avoid all that fiber warp you should lay that console up in a couple of steps. Do the shift cup and inside of the box separate. After you lay up the large top piece. Fiber orientation is the key to making super strong AND light parts when the fibers start to warp and change direction the strength of the piece is affected and cosmetically it looks better imho

John Haley

I will probably lay some like that too. I think it's cool looking either way, but I wanted to try one with out cutting the fabric to see how it looked. This one I started laying from the back of the console.

I have another one in the mold now that I started the lay up from the front of the console. The weave on the front is more uniform.

I have 2 layers and in some places 3 layers of carbon fiber running different directions in this console . I am sure I could stand on this console.

I will lay one up anyway you want it, if you want to buy one.

its very tough to get carbon to take the severe right angle bends without warping the fibers- I build carbon fiber racing sailboats for a living and strength to weight is the key issue and optimizing the fiber direction will make the strongest lightest parts. I am sure you could stand on the piece at this point the material is way stronger than need be. I have seen that people who want to buy cf parts want the weave uniform. Anyway keep up the good work I love seeing cf going into american muscle:cheers:

It cost alot. First you need to make the mold.

The surface is 12k carbon fiber, behind that 3k carbon fiber, 2 layers of 3k carbon kevlar blend, 3k carbon fiber,6k carbon fiber, 3/8 foam as a core in between some of the layers, soric used as a core in select areas. The upper hull is about half the layers.

I used:
about 15 gallons of vinyl ester resin
30+ yards of peel ply
resin infusion and vacuum bagging supplies

Here it is right after I pull them form the molds

I have a customer that had his 1969 T/A fiberglass hood blow open and damaged. I installed one of my fiberglass hoods with removable scoops. These are laser straight right out of the mold and needed only about a golf ball size of bondo and only because one of the rear corners was not perfect when it came out of the mold. No fitting or sanding the sides to make it fit.

Looks great John! Just curious as to how you think the clear coat will hold up with the abuse of the water/sun?
Are you simply clearing your parts with automotive clear, or using a resin/gelcoat type clear?

Holds up great! Looks the same as it did before I put in in the water. The final coat of clear is UV resistant.

68-69 Firebird consoles, modified, I shaved the character off the corners to make these easier to make. The box glues in from the bottom. The shift hole can be put anywhere you want it. I will be making automatic shifter plates too.

Carbon fiber.
