Is there a way to save or covert a CAD file to use in a vector program, like Illustrator?

Illustrator has a feature that allows you to convert DWG/DXF files. There are also converters out there which will convert it for you (google).

Thanks... I should have him save it as DWG or DXF then?

I think either will work. Have him save it as both. :)

Corel Draw will convert them as well. Just be sure to select auto node reduction.

Depending on which Auto CAD you are using there is the export to an IGES file too, this is more for 3D modeling. AutoCAD definatly will have the ability to export to a DXF or a DWG file and I have yet to find a CAD program that didn't read a DXF/DWG.
