View Full Version : Fusor panel adhesive or structural foam on roof braces?

Like an idiot, while cleaning up the bottom side of the roof skin, I decided I should remove the asbestos crap between the roof brace and the roof skin. After working on the brace to the windshield (and slightly bending the brace down) I realized this probably wasn't the best idea I've ever had. I have some Lord Fusor structural foam and some panel adhesive. What would be best to use between the roof brace and roof skin to solid up the roof. Leaning towards the structural foam, any suggestions?

Thanks, Nate

Use foam, it's alot more forgiving and pliable at any temperature and won't create any distortion if there is drastic temperature changes or body flex

Thanks for the advice! That's what I was thinking, but I haven't used any of the foam on anything yet and wanted to make sure that would be best. I'm planning on using the foam in the A pillars and along the edges of the roof as well. Do you have to have a lot of relief holes to avoid pushing out the metal? I'm kind of concerned about the pressure inside the A pillar.

Thanks for your help!

The bracing is not attached to the roof. To keep sound levels down use dynamat.

Thanks for your response. I understand the brace is not attached to the roof. While cleaning up the roof to install sound deadener I decided to remove the original sound deadener between the brace and the roof skin. BAD IDEA. In doing so I slightly bent the brace down. Now I need something to take up the gap between the brace and the roof skin before I put my sound deadener on. The roof gets VERY flimsy when not fully supported by the brace.

Thanks

as I said, use foam, it will help with rattles ,and you shouldn't have to worry much about pressure built up in pillars ,it should be low expanding ,alot of luxury cars have expanding foam filled rockers, floors and pillars, usually tech sheet will tell you the expansion rate

HOLY COW! Are you positive that there was ASBESTOS in the roof? The only use I have heard of in cars is asbestos in brake pads...

NO! I was just joking. I don't know what it's made of.

Just put the Fusor structural foam in the roof braces, we'll see how it looks in about 24 hours. I put some supports from the floor pan to the roof braces just as a precaution. It's only supposed to expand 20 to 50 % and I would think there's enough open area there that it won't try to push out.

Really easy stuff to work with, has the consistency of and goes on like seam sealer. I ran a strip on a mixing board to see how much it expands- no expansion at all so far.

THANKS ELITECUSTOMBODY!!

I've been a Master Auto Tech for 15 years, learning the body work as I go. This is the first car I've built that I'm doing the body and paint work on myself. I really enjoy it, but it's taking me forever. Spend about 80% of my time reading and researching to make sure I'm doing it right and the other 20% actually working when it comes to the body work. I'm kind of anal.... actually I'm starting to think OCD is more accurate.... when it comes to doing body work.

I'm hoping in a couple more weeks I will be back to doing what I know very well and don'thave to think so much. I should have this thing on the road in a month or so for same shake down time before I paint.

It's nice to have a great site like this full of knowledgable people from every aspect of the auto field who are more than willing to help each other out.

THANKS

Nate

Can you post a pic of the roof that you applied the foam too? I would like to know how this works out for you. I have a early production 1964 GTO that does not have a support going down the middle of the roof section and the roof seems very weak. The other 64 GTO I have does have the support going down the middle and seems a lot stronger, must have been a mid process engineering upgrade!

Thanks, Chris

Phew, you had me scared there for a second... :)
