Assuming there's no significant rain between now and January 24, 2010, it looks like it's time for another Cruise the Crest.

So, as usual we should meet at the Shell Station off the ACH exit and the 210 freeway.

Heading toward Pasadena on the 210, take the first exit east of the 2/210 interchange, turn right at the end of the ACH exit ramp and then quickly left into the Shell station. Heading away from Pasadena on the 210, you turn left at the end of the ACH exit ramp, cross over the 210 freeway and turn left into the Shell station.

Meeting time is 6:30am, we generally will wait 5-10 minutes for stragglers. The Angeles Crest Highway is a world class winding mountain road drive and can be a thrill (if you want it to be,) as are the (formerly) scenic views. There's a lot of fire damage up there, so it's very different han it has been in the past. Bring any car you want or hitch a ride with one of the others.

We can eat at Newcomb's Ranch (round trip distance of about 55 miles) which has weathered the fire and the prolonged road closure.

I will keep that date clear to make the first run of 2010. Now all that has to happen is that the rains need to stay away for the next few weeks.

I'm in CA from the 21st to the 26th, bringing the GT2's CF parts over and working on instrumentation. That means I'll be in San Diego on the 24th so making it for Cruise the Crest in Pasadena at 6:30 is going to be a real early day - but I'm considering. If I have jetlag anyway it wont be a problem. What are the chances for hitching a ride if I make it and what is the usual turnout?

It's been a while since we had a Cruise the Crest, so it's hard to say, but I'd expect at least 8-10 cars. You might try to use this thread to hookup with someone coming up from Orange/San Diego counties.

And you'd certainly be more than welcome to ride with me or, I'm sure, several of the others that will be going. It's not as pretty as it used to be, but still a great road and good company.

Once, Mike was leading, I was third behind a certain Orange Nova (not a mamber here). The CHP biker pulled out to nab Mike, the Nova hit the binders HARD and flipped around. I followed suit and then the whole line followed. We went about a mile back down the road, pulled into a large turnout, and waited a while. 15 minutes later Mike shows up heavy 1 speeding ticket. The dude in the Nova never stopped, and I haven't seen him since.

That was Mark. He'd apparently met several members of the CHP over the last month or so before that Cruise, and didn't want to take any chnaces on number 3 or 4 in a short period.

Owner says he may shut Newcomb's Ranch because of road closure
The only restaurant on a 57-mile stretch of Angeles Crest Highway has faced a series of disasters in the last six months, including this week's rainstorms.

Rain moves in; burn areas brace for new damage

It isn't easy being the only restaurant for a 57-mile stretch of Angeles Crest Highway.

The 20 inches of rain that are expected to fall on the San Gabriel Mountains this week, and the closure of California 2 above Mt. Wilson on Sunday, are just the latest in a series of calamities that have befallen Newcomb's Ranch in the last six months.

Since August, the high-altitude eatery has been threatened by fire, mudslides, road access issues -- and even the Air Quality Management District, which fined the restaurant for using a diesel generator after Southern California Edison's electricity-distribution circuit for the area was fried in the Station fire.

Now the owner of Newcomb's is saying he's going to call it quits. For good.

"I don't see how we can reopen in the spring," said Frederick Rundall, the La Cañada Flintridge physician who has owned Newcomb's since late 2001.

It was Saturday at 6 p.m., and Rundall had received word from the California Department of Transportation an hour and a half earlier that the stretch of Angeles Crest Highway leading to his business was being closed because of this week's rainstorms.

"Ultimately something has to have an economic opportunity. If the road is closed, it's not going to work," Rundall said of the 10-acre property he was quite optimistic about, and even planned to expand, as recently as two weeks ago.

Describing the interplay between Newcomb's and its dependence on the road upon which it sits, Rundall added, "It's a little bit like putting a great big delicious dessert in front of you, and I also handcuff your hands behind your back."

Bundled in jackets and sweat shirts, Rundall and five of his employees sat in the restaurant's main dining area, warming themselves in front of a gently burning fireplace. The butter-colored walls of the room were lined with color photos of the mountain landscape that inspired Rundall to buy the isolated property in the 655,000-acre Angeles National Forest.

The mood that night wasn't much different from any other winter Saturday. The crowd of motorcyclists, skiers and hikers wasn't large enough to muffle the light rock and folk music playing overhead. The long bar leading to a large flat-screen TV was only half full, and the wooden dining tables were mostly unfilled.

Many of the regulars were surprised to hear of the restaurant's imminent closure. And some of its long-term staff even doubted Rundall's willingness to shut the business for good.

"When the road's ready, this place will reopen," predicted Darren Martinelli, 38, who works as a bartender at Newcomb's.

Cyrus Blourtchi, 42, of Woodland Hills is a Newcomb's devotee who goes to the log-cabin hangout three times a week. On Saturday, Blourtchi had ridden his motorcycle to the restaurant twice -- once in the morning to get in a ride before the storms closed the road, and again in the afternoon to test out a new exhaust system on his BMW.

"A big part of our lives will be missing with [Newcomb's] gone. It's a lifestyle for so many of us," said Blourtchi, who was hanging out with a couple of fellow bikers who would soon join him in braving the winter cold, rolling the 27 miles back downhill toward home in the dark.

The three months Newcomb's was closed last summer because of the Station fire and its aftermath "seemed like an eternity," Blourtchi said, referring to the road closure resulting from the worst wildfire in Los Angeles County history, a fire that claimed 90 buildings, two firefighters' lives, 250 square miles of Angeles National Forest -- and, it seems, Newcomb's.

The Station fire wasn't the first to affect Newcomb's Ranch, an establishment that was built in 1939 shortly after Angeles Crest Highway was built, and has, in its 71 years, been used as a restaurant, a hotel, a general store, a gas station and, legend has it, a brothel. Most of the original two-story building burned to the ground in a 1976 fire. Nearby, the original cabin built by Newcomb's Ranch founder Louis Newcomb on Angeles Crest also burned down -- in 1913.

The Station fire was, however, the restaurant's most disastrous encounter with Mother Nature. Saved from the Station fire, the small restaurant has been clobbered by its aftermath. First, when the only road leading to it was out of commission for three months. It took $12 million to repair Angeles Crest Highway. The fire melted signs, guardrails and center-of-the-street cat's eyes that help drivers navigate the twisty, graded terrain that has made it such a beloved destination for area motorcyclists.

During that time, Newcomb's survived on the $1,240 daily payout Rundall received from his property insurance carrier -- money he used to pay his salaried employees and to cover the cost of the 40 gallons of diesel needed each day to generate electricity because Southern California Edison was no longer able to provide it. The remaining employees, some of whom live on the restaurant's second floor, survived off their savings and unemployment checks.

When the road, and Newcomb's, reopened Nov. 30, it was only temporary. On Dec. 12, both were forced to shut down again when a storm blew through the area, triggering a mudslide. The road and restaurant reopened Dec. 21, only to be closed again Sunday in anticipation of the rains that started in the afternoon.

"Who really decides what happens up here is Caltrans, Angeles National Forest, California Highway Patrol, L.A. County sheriff," said Rundall, frustrated with the short notice for the latest closure. "It's one of the reasons why I don't think I want to reopen. I think it's better that the governmental agencies reopen their own restaurant."

As recently as two weeks ago, Rundall was thinking of expanding his property with a bed and breakfast and small conference center. He paid $545,000 for the property eight years ago and said he has spent $1 million on upgrades and renovations.

Now Rundall says he may tear the whole place down.

Don Niles, Caltrans supervisor for California 2, said the road would stay closed for the duration of the storms -- probably about a week.

"The last time we had rain there was a mudslide and people got stuck up there, and we don't want that to happen again," Niles said.

Not knowing when the road will reopen, Rundall doubts he will be able to retain his staff. Nor does he expect his insurance provider to pay him a settlement that would help the restaurant remain open.

That's because "it's more a matter of having flood insurance than fire insurance," he said, even though whatever flooding may take place as a result of this week's storms would be caused by fire-inflicted deforestation.

The Air Quality Management District will hold a hearing to work with Rundall on the question of emissions violations. But he doesn't seem game to keep the operation running.

"If I had to do it over again, I never would have bought the place. I really wouldn't."

Unless this rain stops by Wednesday or so, I wouldn't expect the Crest to be open by Sunday morning.

As for tearing down Newcomb's Ranch, why would the owner do that? The building certainly isn't a tear-down. My guess is that the owner's trying to build up support for his upcoming AQMD hearing. If he does anything, I'd expect him to sell to another owner.

Oh, that would make the wife happy on so many levels. Thanks Mike, I knew I could count on you.

I'd cook much of it earlier in the morning and just use the BBQ to help keep things toasty.

If it works out for this weekend, or another in the near future, you could meet up somewhere along PCH (Sunset?) and cruise north all the way to Pt. Magu. That's close to 35 miles of the greatest cruising road on the face of the earth. Then you get to go up Potrero Road, another very windy road, though only 3 miles long. Total drive from Sunset/PCH to my place is 47 miles, and it's all good.

If Rocky's there, Sammy's not. He's got a serious dog agression issue, and Hanna always backs him up (to the tune of taking on a black bear that was on Sammy). It could turn ugly real fast.

Nice pics Larry. Nobody asked about the condom package or the enhancement pills. I'm glad someone noticed my little shrine!

On a sorrowful note, Rich got into an accident with his '71 Chevelle about a mile from my house. It was not his fault, but the resultant damage pushed in the LH fender hard, bent the top of the rim way in, and shifted much of the sheetmetal over to the right. I'll likely get most of this wrong. Two lanes, Rich in the RH lane. Someone pulls out of a street on the RH side, forcing Rich alter his direction to the left to avoid being hit. Another car overtaking Rich on his left impacted the LH fender. So, three cars involved, two cars hurt, but not the one that caused the accident.

Remember the Trunk Monkey, where the killer monkey pops out of the trunk of your car to put the hurt on someone else? I want a Trunk Mary, who leaps out after an accident and makes sure that every base, angle, step, etc. is covered. Thank you Mary for helping Rich yesterday.

Yeah, you know the saying, s--t happens.
After turning left on to Lynn rd, was doing about 40mph (50mph zone) at the first street, side street, saw this SUV pull up look at me ( I thought) I saw eye to eye, Her face was facing me, can't forget that, so no problem she saw me and I continue, she turns her head to the right as she pulls out right in front me. I hit my breaks and was headed for a direct front end crash to her rear, I automatically swerved to the left and I really don't know how I missed her but I did, at that time I was on her left side inches, maybe an inch from touching, this made me take half of the next left lane, and the guy in that lane than plowed into my right fender. Door was not touched, but I thought he hit the WHOLE left side of car, lucky there. Both the guy that hit me and my car had to be flat bedded. The person that caused the accident was able to drive with no damage. If that vehicle that hit my fender was not there it would have been your normal avoided a close one thing. Our 3 Vehicles were the only cars on the road at that time. Seems to be a very quiet rd.

So I was right on top of her at 40 mph when she turned in front of me type of accident.
I really think she was on her cell phone, but can't prove it..:machine:

BTW Mary Possi was Gods gift to me as She had stopped to investigate and help me with info since she works for AAA, my insurance Co. Also used her AAA card for my free flat bed trip home with no extra charge that my car would have cost me ($400+ per tow truck driver) since I only had 7 mile tow limit, she had 100 mile tow limit. Thanks again Mary, your the greatest.....

Yikes---sorry to hear that Rich----It's hard to believe 30 minutes earlier we were hanging out and I was complimenting how great a paint job you have on that car. Hope to see you back in action soon----Props to Mary--that was really great that she was willing to stop, help you out with the details, and take care of the tow---

Mary did one better when we found out that about the accident while we were still at Carls, she went out of her way to help Rich. Mary and David are of a type that is getting rare today and I am glad to call them friend.

That was a great day with great cars and great company.

I'm really sorry to hear about this hiccup; hopefully it's mostly metal repair and paint paid for by an insurance company.

Glad to hear the Chevelle will rise from the ashes and be with us for more fun stuff.

On our drive out, I looked at the accident scene and saw a nice tire smear on the center median curb about 30 yards or so preceding where the cars came to rest. You could see where the Chevelle braked heavily as there were skid marks from wheel lock-up in his #2 lane.

The Infiniti was traveling at a greater speed than Rich's Chevelle as the impact intrusion depth to the Chevelle increases more towards the front. There's much less depth at the fender lip and much more near the headlamp and bumper. The heaviest degree of intrusion is around the side marker area. By comparison, the crush damage to the Infiniti's right front is pretty unremarkable.

What I think happened is the Infiniti was overtaking the Chevelle and both were in their respective lanes of travel. When the other SUV suddenly exited from the side street, Rich moved to the left and braked hard. The driver of the Infiniti saw this evasive action and then swerved left as well. That tire smear shows that the Infiniti's left front hit the side of the center median curbing causing that car to then bounce back to the right crushing the Chevelle's fender. The greater degree of intrusion seen on the Chevelle coupled with the fore-aft slide against the fender shows that the Infiniti was the "bullet" car.

Curious to see if the estimate shows that there's impact damage to the Infiniti's left front wheel and suspension. There's a lot to be said for old muscle sheet metal and frame structure ...

Yes there is more updates.
The Chevelle still sitting in the shop with 90% of the cash from my Insurance Co. The Automobile Club of So. Cal., in the hands of my painter. They pay quick. The rest of the money comes as the car is torn apart and unseen damage is found. Needed parts about to be ordered.
Damage is really not as bad as it looks, the chevelle held its own as the SUV that hit it has MAJOR suspension damage and body damage.
My tire is bent in due to upper A-Arm bent, so bent up balljoint is barely intact. New rebuilt A-arm due this week and also picking up upper and lower Tubular front arms this week for later on install.
The Police report shows the car that entered the road way is at fault.
On the Police report she (the causer) says they were really going fast. My question to that is: How would you know this, you said you didn't seen any cars. My thoughts are still she was on the cell phone. I saw her look right at me, eye to eye, so I figured no problem the person sees me, BUT NO. She pulls out, Me doing approx. 40 in a 50 zone.
Again my insurance Co and the car that hit me insurance Co are going after the person that caused accident.
If I didn't swerve to miss that SUV that caused the accident I would have mashed into the rear of her and thrown her vehicle out of control and no telling what would have happen than, but I'm sure she don't see that part.:machine:

That nitwit (I am being real nice) is never going to admit she screwed up and pulled into traffic while on the phone. Even if both you and SUV were going 3 time the legal limit it is still the responsiblity of the person turning in front of them to make sure they can complete the turn before you arrived in the same location. Some people should not be allowed to handle anything more complicated than a pencil.

Her second mistake was not taking a second look as she was into the turn. That would have avoided any contact, maybe.

Yes there are ways to get that info, Deanna. Would have to be by a lawyer or Police Investigators to get the kind of info..They would get that info from the mobile phone company she uses.
But at this time its a done deal. She's at fault and thats the way it is moving on.

This thread got Hi-Jacked, but I might as well continue with the Hi-jacking..
Finally got my car back. Stay away from the Taiwan replacement fenders if you can, there a total bitch to align. Than After the car is all done I run into a guy selling used chevelle parts with some cherry 71-72 chevelle original used fenders for less than the new one cost.. That really sucks bad.
The repair/painter took forever to finish. But He Got the paint match perfect which was a main worry of mine..
But the Chevelle is on the road again and I'm a little gun shy with the other drivers on the road.
