entirely too cool. As a guy who works on real helo's, i don't even want to think about the time and money involved in that. Hell of a way to stay busy after retirement though...

Very cool, but the B52 that crashed 3-4 years ago was even more impressive.
As far a piloting, nothing comes close to these guys http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5914999402901911766# They fly at the Sepulveda Dam Basin in L.A. regularly. It's intimidating being behind a safety fence when they are running. A 4'+ diameter decapitator only a few feet away from the guys flying it.

That just sounds badass.
WOW! I had no idea they had model airplanes with jet engines. I thought they were all props. That was fantastic. Hats off the to people involved in building that.

I have seen a F-16 RC model. That was cool. They had ducted fans. The jets are way cool and just as expensive.

Carl,
I'm by no means an expert when it comes to RC model piloting but that's beyond incredible!!! Immediately sent the link to one of my friends who's learning to fly a RC Heli.
Thanks for sharing!
BTW the vid with the SR71 is also very, very cool.

I flown and wrecked many planes, usually never costing more than $150. I have a $250 vintage racer with a fiberglass fuselage that I was nervous as hell flying. I couldn't image flying something that I have thousands of dollars in. I'd be too nervous to have fun with it.

Here's an RC jet model the size of a Piper Cub.

This reminds me of a pal of mine from back when I was building commercial airliners at McDonnell/Douglas. He was 'bonding' with his stepson, and the kid was real impressed that his new Dad built airplanes for a living. So, they started building an R/C plane together. It was a WWII fighter- I think a P-51. Not a super high dollar kit, but not a beginner's kit either.
So they finish the build, paint, decals, etc, and it's first flight day. They go to the local R/C field and double-check all the controls, fire up the engine, and the plane rolls down the runway.
It starts to lift off, and my pal- the airplane guy, pulls back on the stick to gain altitude.
But, R/C planes are wired so that when you push the stick up, it goes up..and vice versa. It's not like a control stick in the cockpit.
So the plane was about 4-5 feet in the air when he forced it nose-first into the runway...

It's too bad that they can't go over 200mph anymore. Some of those jets can go double to triple the speed they allow. If they go over 200mph it set off the defense system satellites as a missle.
Way cool those guys.

All he had to do was switch the servos to his liking and he would have been like real planes. You think he would have noticed when he did his preflight inspection, lol.

R/C jets are just amazing. you really need to know what you are doing or else. only down side is those jet engines are about 5K for a cheap one. the ones on that SR71 are probably 10K+ each.
For a beginner plane you don't start with a p-51 or anyother military plane, they are for the advanced pilot. they are as quirky as the real thing, same with helecopters

We all told him that. He knew it too- but it was his first R/C project, he followed the instructions to the letter, and didn't think it through until it was too late. We all got a great laugh out of it. ]
When we asked how 'impressed' the step son was with the whole thing, he said they both were able to laugh about it too, and had a talk about no one being perfect...
