Hello members!

I've been on this site for around a month now... and WOW, I've learned a lot. Like the title said, I came from a 05 subaru STi. It was sponsored and was a fun car to drive. But then all the contracts and obligations with sponsorships became a PITA. Most of the subaru was carbon fiber (trunk, diffuser, fenders, etc) or had a one off part from japan. It made 335 hp to the wheels and 361ft/lbs on a AWD mustang dyno. Also had 2 magazine articles ( http://www.pasmag.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1116&Itemid=105 )

My old build thread:
http://www.iwsti.com/forums/gd-members-journals/51719-dlouie87-need-help-some-wheels-advan-rs-d-camaro.html

So I got this 67 camaro as project car. I know it won't handle like my subaru but I wanted something with some history and I can't go wrong with a 1st gen camaro.

The plan for the camaro is to make a pro-touring machine that I can take to autocross and it'll be my daily driver!

Happy New Years everyone

Looks like you have a really nice starting point on the Camaro. Paint looks really clean.

What do you have planned? That Camaro might surprise you when its done!

I have a ls1 with 4l60e going in there. The wiring needs a little more tweaking to get everything running. Looking for some wheels still. Either going with brushed or matte black centers.

Just trying to take it step by step. I'm polishing up all the window trim today and spraying the trunk black today too.

Look up bad penny I bet that car would out handle an STI or Evo hands down. I cant wait to see how your build goes, looks like you have a lot to bring to the table.

I'm not sure that is really a fair statement. Are you expecting the STI/EVO to be completely stock? And in that case, that wouldn't be much of a race. I'm all over racing vintage iron... it's a lot of fun. But I have been there when properly prepared STI/EVO's are there, and they can be seriously quick around the track.

I just don't like blanket statmentes like these.

Okay, back to the regularly scheduled programming.

Okay, back to the regularly scheduled programming.

I agree. Bad penny is one amazing looking/performing car. Actually if it wasn't for that car getting featured on SPEEDHUNTERS.com ( http://speedhunters.com/archive/2008/06/19/random-snap-gt-gt-introducing-bad-penny.aspx ), I dont think I would be here with my 67. Thanks Steve!!!

That car was the first to give me inspiration to go forth with buying a camaro.

In other words... yes, Bad penny will give a stock sti/evo a run but there are A LOT of modified evos and sti that I seen and rode in that are UBERLY fast (like keeping up or out running modified 430/gt2s/gt3s/zo6/etc). You name it I've seen these some AWD monster beat it. But then again, it also rely on the driver too. I know that I won't be able to drive/race the penny like the Mary Pozzi would drive it. I just don't have the experience.

But with that said, I'm building this 67 with no intentions to be a "race warrior" but with the intentions of just seeing how I can make this project evolve. I'm young and I dont have 50k to just throw on these cars but I do know how to budget and possibly put something interesting and unique together. This car will be a challenge and I look forward to this forum and lateral-G to help out :twothumbs

Hi Dan,

Muscle cars vs. AWD Sti...

No, there shouldn't be comparison. Rather , they should be in the same garage, complimenting each other !

Power - Sound - Exciting ... but both cars come from different routes !...and roots !

Good luck on your project, Dan! I'm subscribing since I am always excited to see a fellow young guy with a 1st gen Camaro! Judging by the length of your thread with your STI, it looks like you have the commitment to follow through, which is the ONLY thing required to eventually complete the project. If we can make it happen, I'd like to meet you and give you a ride in my car sometime...ever in Sacramento?

Just to clear the air, the WRX has terrible steering feedback, is incredibly underdamped, and understeers like a labrador on linoleum. I really despise its default dynamics. My Camaro :machine: my WRX all day long.

Yeah, both cars were very fun. My was a great corner carver but the looks/stance of some of the camaros on this site are just immaculate. With the right wheels and suspension, these classic cars can look so mean. So lets see where this project takes me. I'm not a big metal fabricator so I dont think I can do much to the body :(.

one of the funnest confidence inspiring cars I have driven was a 08 or 09 EVO with a few thousand in suspension and other mods, all I'm saying is don't let the false logic fool you into thinking that these cars can ride on rails with the proper tuning, the problem is for 40 years no one in the mainstream has been building these cars for handling safety and over all performance, it always just been for 1/4 mile time. The import scene is a large part of why I am a even a member here and why I am inspired to make my car handle.

Thanks guys. The STi was a extremely fun car to drive. It just got profiled too much by the cops. I'm only 22 so that makes it worst...

I tracked it a couple times and I got it to run 12.1s consistantly. I think with a better driver it could of broke 11s with c16.

As for the camaro... EVERYTHING IS SOOOO NEW to me. But I'm learning slowly. It's not going to be used as a race car but I want it build right and with some modern technology.

I'll get more update later. I just did the inside in deadner and painted/relocated the battery to the trunk

As an alternative to the tall spindles, you can perform the Guldstrand mod or do tall upper ball joints. I would recommend doing one of the three. Spend some time reading the stickies in the suspension forum... Lots of good info in there. But yes, I would recommend doing one of the three (G-mod, Tall UBJ, or tall spindle). And just say no to drop spindles.

I might just get tall spindles or save for the ATS spindle. I'm too scared to mess up on the drilling with the Guldstrand mod.

I need wheels first, the rollers on the cars won't fit the brakes.

so I'm trying to decide on some wheels. (hardest decision ever)

Crazy talk...life doesn't get any simpler than where you're at right now. If you sell it now, it will be 5x harder to re-enter the hobby later on. A daily driver can be had for cheap. If you're really desperate, sell some of the nice parts you bought. Its better to lose money on parts than let go of the hobby all together. There's way too many stories of guys I talk to who say "man I wish I would have never sold that car."

3 months of summer work ahead of you to save for a car...Do you really even need a vehicle for grad school?

Negative, Save your money and do that when school is over. Stick to the necessaties for now.

the stock rollers won't fit the brakes, it has no gauges, and the rear end is blown.

so those are my necessities... and I dont have the funds to track my car. I was hoping to make this car my daily driver.

I seen a post recently on some nice looking wheels that would go real well with you color scheme, bout $160.00 a pop, and think it mentioned back spacing up to 5 1/2" and sizes to 17x9.5. I'll try and find it. Pick up new posi unit, I use Eaton, so far so good with lots of track time. In expensive gauges and your good to go.

Whatta ya think, nother $2000 to finish?

Should be decent daily driver.

everybody that sells almost always regrets it later. I've had many offers over the past 15 years, Donald trump couldn't buy this car and thats the truth!!!

Summit Legend 5 wheels - anybody using them?
Wow, good looking and super cheap - $135/ea! They even have tons of backspacing on their 17x8 (5.25"), just what I need for the rear. The front I'd be running a 17x8, 4.5" BS. 245/45 Nitto 555 tires on all 4 corners.

Anybody running them on their ride that wants to admit it? I've come to the conclusion that high dollar wheels are not an option for me in the near future.

what gauges do you recommend with the ls1 motor? like dakota digital?

sorry about the questions... I'm just becoming flustered

Dude dont give up now..I hear you trust me. I sold a car that I build with my friends for a ring. I kinda regret it. I can build another but that was my car. I have cragar s/s in 17's and I believe they will fit the 6piston wilwood..I have the same set and just finished putting them together..just have to run a test fit with it all together. I did a dry fit with no caliper and there was plenty of room. Should be fine. I believe that wilwood say that you need a minimum of 16" ..I would look into these...cheap, decent looking and should clear..

if those will not work just search the classifieds there is always good stuff popping up...just keep your eyes open on here, lateral-g.net, ls1tech.com..or even ebay. Stick with it. It will be worth it.:)

Don't sell the car! Sell yourself, not the car!

They seem similar in design to the Torque Thrust's and in 17" should clear but I would call manufacturer and ask first.

As far as gauges go, get the least expensive for now just to get you by.

Same for rear end, find least expensive option to get you by. You might even find another 10 bolt for a couple hundred bucks.

MAIN OBJECTIVE: KEEP CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

I'm trying so hard not to sell the car. But i have a 2 month deadline to get it out of the garage.

are there ways to make these cars harder to steal just incase I have to park it outside? power locks? power window? hood pin locks? fuel shut off? (a PM here would be better).

I'm asking around to see if those wheels would work and I'm looking around to find some 18's.

as for rear ends. I should just find someone to rebuild this 10 bolt with posi and 3.73 gear. but I still need to switch it to multi-leafs.

if you hear anyone with any used parts.... let me know.

Thanks,

Dan

ok.

I might see some light in this dark tunnel.

Talk to jason rushforth and he is going to help me out with some stuff if i can budget everything within the next day or two.

as for the gauges. I might go with these http://www.newvintageusa.com/2020series.html

or see if frank at prodigy can hook it up with his rebate sale on autometers

now.... the rear stock ten bolt with no posi and unknown gears. Does anyone have a rear end with 3.73 gears and a posi or know how to rebuilt a 10 bolt in northern california (around yuba city area) for a good price? Ive never worked on a rear end before and don't want to screw it up.

and as for the interior, i'm just going to leave the column shift in there for now without dashpad/headliner/door panels.

I'm also in need of upgraded the suspension. any suggestion? drop springs? used uca?

But, since there was some light and no one has contacted me about the car... i thought I'd lay some sound deadner in today.

if you guys see any used parts... let me know. I'm very grateful to have people on this forum help me, a new member out.
