View Full Version : Three days without a smoke!!!
Three days smoke-free. 13 years with this habit (a pack and a half a day as of the past 8), and I can't remember going this long without one. Never pictured myself not being a smoker, but it's starting to feel like a reality. I know three days is chump change to most, but for me, might as well be an eternity. Using the Camel Snus right now and awaiting some Swedish Snus to be delivered (The Domestic camel stuff, I must attest, is pretty weak compared to the Swedish product).
Anyone who is remotely considering quitting, take a look at http://www.healthline.com/blogs/smoking_cessation/2009_01_01_smoking_cessation_archive.html for the rundown and https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=34775771&postID=2139735931512002861 for some good comments from users... Don't think I wold have made it this far without it.

Good for you, glad to hear it. Three days may seem like chump change to a non smoker, but to a smoker I think it's pretty good. Congrats and keep with it.

I ran into snus stuff in Finland, it's pretty common there as well.. if you use that for a long time your gums die and your teeth drop out from what i've heard..
i quit smoking about two months ago and have been smoking for about 17 / 18 years prior to that, about a pack a day (started when i was 13..) all i can say is you're doing good, keep it up.

Congrats man, each day after gets a little easier, just keep a stubborn attitude that YOU control the urge, not it to you. As the first week is over, the second almost seems downhill, by week 3 you'll feel a helluva lot better, it gets easier, and the yellow-finger goes away.
Keep on going!

Stay with it man. I am NOT one of those non smoker preachers, but I do tell anyone trying to quit. And since you posted here your obviously looking for support.
I smoked 3 packs a day, 3 packs for 15 years. I would roll over in bed and light one, finish one before sleep in bed. i was BAD! Tried to quit and failed a dozen times, Tried everything from the patch to poking holes in the filters. Then one day I said Screw It and put them down. No help, no patches, just fricken quit, and you know what, I did not die! But when I did this time I did it without telling anyone I was quiting. I did it over Christmas holiday and Lisa did not figure it out till March! By then I was home free. And yes, she still did and still does smoke! And I had to quit with her smoking, and league bowling (at the time you could, were required, LOL, to smoke on the lanes). I just had to do it, I did not feel good anymore. And there was not one single compelling reason to continue smoking. And now it is socially unacceptable.
That was 12 years ago last week and I cannot begin to tell you how much freedom I got from quiting! And how much extra money, and that is when they were $1.50 a pack!
Now they have made cigs Fire Safe and have added more garbage. Lisa and I were talking about it last night, She wants to quit but simply does not have the will power. Thousand excuses and reasons for bad timing. I really want her to quit, but there is very little conversation before I get don't tell me what to do. I hope she musters the courage before they win the battle.
Read some of this stuff I found last night might put you over the hump
2 weeks, 2 weeks and your home free, If your really ready!

Good Luck and congratulations in advance

Stick with it man !!
Not smoking is so much more healthy than smoking.
I smoked ( casually ) for the last 30 years.
Since I was 13.
I quit about 4 weeks ago.
Because , I just couldn't get a full breath anymore.
I have asthma too.
So , smoking wasn't a good idea anyway.
I just couldn't breath anymore, so I quit.
I was afraid I had lung cancer or emphysema or something.
But , the bronchitis seems to be clearing up now..
Stay quit,
It's good for you..

I guess I need to quit too....
I have a very short temper (which I have always battled) and I tell myself that "If I didn't smoke, I would probably kill somebody" and I realize that that is not the case. I just use that as an excuse to smoke, along with "I enjoy it" and "it is relaxing". I think that all in all, the cons definately out weight the pros for smoking. Haha.... Pros for smoking.... Non-smokers would say that there are no Pros for smoking, but they have no clue. (Advice for people who have never smoked: don't preach to a smoker about quitting... you will only make us want another ciggarette.)
I have smoked 10-15 ciggarettes a day for the last 6 years and I can already tell that it is hurting my health. I am only 23, but shortness of breath and chest pains will scare you sometimes. I've never really had the "desire" to smoke more that 10-15 a day for some reason. I just "need" one about every hour. The main thing that gets me is boredom. I can go for hours without smoking if I'm working intently, but as soon as I slow down, I smoke. I just wish I could convince my brain that I am always "busy" so that I don't have the urge to smoke....
Sorry for the rant..... Good luck to you! It is dificult, but anytime you get a bad craving, just find something to do that takes your mind off of it.... that is the advice that I would give to myself.

Keep with it. I am 26 months smoke free. Had been smoking for 15 years before that. Pack and a half a day for the better part of 10 years. It sucks. I hate smoking now, but still get a twitch for one every now and then. I shrug it off and I am fine.
I can finally run over 5 miles again and still have my breath at the end. The feeling now is soooo much better than it had been for a long time.

Yesterday was my last day of using Copenhagen.
I feel like complete rubbish today, even with the nicotene gum, but I need to do this.

I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue!
WOW, Thanks for the comments and support guys. Encouraging to know so many on here have kicked the habit. I was'nt even planning on quitting, but my sister and her boyfriend mentioned it a couple days before New Years and I said "what the hell, I can do this too"...The prospect always seemed so epic, like it would require a while to work up to...but it's all in the mind. I might be cheating with the SNUS, but I'll beat the habbit first and then ween off the nicotine later. I did a fair amount of research on it, and alot of people successfully quit while using it. since it's steam cured and not fire cured (like dip and chew) the carcinogenic levels are crazy low and don't statistically show oral cancers...but again, just using it as a tool to quit.
Charlie, Jeff, True, I'll keep you guys in the back of my mind when the urge hits.

I quit September 1,1991 at 9.05 p.m. I put my last cigerrette out and put a patch on. Two months of patches and I have never touched a cigerette again. Good luck. You will need it. Take it one day at a time and before you know it, it will have been years.

When the air filter on our cars are dirty we either clean them ( K&N ), or we discard them and replace them ( paper elements ).
We all love our motors enough for us to want them to ingest clean air. Clean air makes our carburetors/fuel injection system happy! :)
Until K&N can make washable and reusable lungs i strongly suggest you keep off the cigarettes.
FYI, i used to smoke 4 packs a day! :smoke:
Keep it up buddy, you can do it!! :1st:

Hey Ash!....how are you gonna live up to your screen name now?...J/K
I think it is great that you have made it 3 days or so without lighting up. Keep up the good work, but don't look at it in number of days, or weeks, etc... just worry about about TODAY and determine in your mind that you will not smoke TODAY, and then tomorrow, make the same committment to yourself, and each day afterwards....it is a day by day process until you get to a point where you just don't think about it any longer....that point may be a ways down the road, but take it just one day at a time. Best wishes on your new life!
BTW, Be careful, because food will smell sooooo good in a few days....

LOL!
With all these stories.. I'm glad I never gave into peer pressure to start. I just cant believe how addictive they are? Is it the tobacco itself or all the other additives that make it so?
I saw one of those 'truth' commercials saying 1 in 3 smokers die from doing so.. that would be reason enough to quit right there!

Started smoking in 6th grade when started on pills(no prescribed) for chronic, debilitating sinus pain, and wassmoking 3 packs a day of camel non filters, yr and half later tried out for basket ball, couldnt breath, they took me to local dock, axray showed top 2 inch of my lungs very bad shape(I short drew on them so I didnt gag at first) doc asked I told, he told me I had sinus infections and asked about other issues, had had tonsils out so not fighting that then got sinus issues.
Well near end of 7th grade my bill to dealers for pills was bad, they wanted me to steal.
They tried to kill me, and I quit all of it, put 3 guys in jail, 2 got killed in prison trying to steal or kill, other guy is out and on straigh t and narrow, so good things happened.
Also moved from moms to dads, switched schools, got close to people in area where I live, that got me interested in cars and tada I am a mechanic.

Like Tony I never started, had a Grandfather die of emphasema (sp) that is a worse disease than any cancer (IMO) and that is what kept me away. I am glad to see anyone quit smoking, it such a nasty habit and your Loved ones will get to have in their lives longer and healthier. Besides we will have more people into Pro-touring for everyone that quits. Good Luck and Congrats to Ash and True for unslaving yourselves.

Day ten smoke free for me. On and off smoked for years. Quit once for ten years and started again...idiot.
It's been damn hard to quit this round, seems to get harder. Maybe more stress to factor is one reason I guess.
Good luck quitters!

I don't know how I smoked for so long either... now that I don't smoke anymore, anytime I walk by someone who is smoking, or if their clothes smell like smoke... I just gag... man, now I know what people were talking about when they said that smokers stink!
It is said that reformed smokers are more sensitive to second-hand smoke than a never smoked person. Smoking around me does bother me if it is really heavy and the smoker is being a butthead and trying to offend others people in the area (there are smolers like this believe it or not). I can hangout in the smoking section of a Vegas Casino for awhile and be to offended but I know people who have quit and will gag if it is anywhere near them. Maybe I am more tolerant than others........naw thats not it.

When I started driving in 1974 a pack smokes and a gallon of gas were the same price. Smoking was cool and riding around was fun. I decided that looking cool sitting in the parking lot smoking cigarettes with no gas money for the car was not much fun so instead I bought the gallon of gas to go riding around.
For me it was an economic choice since I could not afford to smoke AND buy gas. My first car was a hand me down 63 Galaxie XL 500 R code 427 2x4 Convertible that my Dad bought new for my mother in August 1963. In 1974-1975 that 1963 Galaxie was worth absolutely Nothing, Zero, Nada! That car got 7 MPG no matter how you drove it so it really was an economic choice for me. Also remember that the price of gas had "doubled" in price that year due to the Arab Oil Embargo from $0.30/gallon to almost $0.60/gallon. That alone put a real cramp in your style!
To this day I have never smoked but I damn sure STILL ride around.
Some things never change!

12 days, already on the backside of the whole thing. Keep it up.
Congrats guys, and keep at it. You can do it.
I know, cause I did it.
My story is similar to Franks, started at 14 (52 now) 3 packs a day, wife smokes too.
16 months ago I quit. I did 30 days worth of chantix, and put em down at 2 weeks. I "think" the stuff helped, but who knows. The dreams are very cool, and I still get em, kinda like an acid flashback while sleeping.
Life is better. I don't cough up yellow stuff. My fingers went back to thier original color. I can smell things again. And I don't get out of breath as easy.
My wife still smokes, in the garage. She seems to have moved intoi my shop now, the heat is better on that side, and she bought me these nice camaro stools for my birthday, so there is something to sit on. She's moved her laptop, crossword puzzle, and ashtray into my shop and it pisses me off that she would be so inconsiderate.
But I ain't gonna smoke. I don't want to and I won't.

This is awesome that you guys are doing this and building each other up. I am not a smoker, but I take care of smokers every day in the clinic and hospital. Go hang out at the hospital some time and you will learn pretty quick that smokers stay sicker longer and that is if they get better. If you have kids, take that into consideration too. My dad was a smoker and still is and knowing what I know and having seen what I have seen, I just hope I have him in my life by the time I have children of my own. I won't even get into the economics of it all, some of your project budgets are going to have a nice bump.
