I want to paint my 72 Cutlass Satin/Hot Rod Black. A buddy of mine used John Deere paint on his Blazer I believe it is a single stage paint. Is there such a thing as base coat and "flat" clear??

yes, there are a bunch of companies who make flat or satin clears, which go over normal black basecoat.
dupont/standox/spies/glassurit/etc all have satin/flat clears.
I prefer standox 007 flat clear

Why limit yourself to flat/satin black? With the flat clear you can make any color flat/satin! :idea:Just imagine your Cutlass in low-gloss silver or charcoal? Tape off some factory looking stripes and do 'em in gloss clear! Leave the flat black for the old hotrods!

Thanks That's what I wanted to hear. I'm by NO means a paint guy I'm a fabricator..... My plan is to have the car flat black with racing stripes and about a 3/4" "trible" tattoo looking outline in gloss black something differant. I have already "brushed" the chrome and bumper with a scotch brite wheel that goes on a 4 1/2" grinder to give it a brusched nickel look. I want the car to look MEAN. Now if I could only find a cowl hood for a Cutlass. I like the W/30 hoods but every Cutlass you see has one so looks like I'll have to make one :)

You can also use flattening agent in regular clear, I've used plenty, works well
