But would they be overkill for lighter material (16ga or 22ga)?

Certainly more affordable than the old "punch and flare" tool kinda thing that I am used to using.

Of course, you'd need a press (for lighter stuff too?) which isn't a big deal, I want one anyway, but are there any differences in the end result? Are there differences in how the two approaches impact the metal?

And to answer your questions. It works great for light stuff. The key is to make sure the female die is fully pressed down against the male die. This will reduce the warp on the metal overall. We use a standard 20 ton press for everything up to .125 plate.
