If I do my own bodywork, sanding and priming how much should I expect to pay for a quality one color, clear coat paint job?

Interesting first post.
Do you also need a color sand?
I have seen magazine articles that get paint done at one-day-paint-and-body for really cheap.
Where do you live. In san diego at an okay shop that may not be here tomorrow you would pay around $2500. Thats with color sand and buff.

I'm in new Hampshire.
I can do the buffing, that should save some money

I doubt you will find anyone to warranty the paint job if they will shoot it. May be better off renting a booth and doing it yourself.

I agree with this comment....what's under the paint is the foundation, and if the painter doesn't have a good idea what the foundation is, I doubt that he can warranty the job. Heck, sounds like you have done all of the hard, labor intensive work....grab a gun and shoot it.

Renting a booth sounds like a great idea. If I can find one.
Unless there is a way to build a cheap temporary spray booth, maybe staple plastic up around the garage, has anyone ever done this and been able to keep the dust to a minimum.

Im always in favor of doing the job yourself but you can waste a lot of money in paint material and supplies if not applied correctly. If your approaching your project as a learning experience and aren't expecting perfection it will be fun. The bodywork and priming are the most important steps in a good paint job in my opinion. Do your homework ahead of time and find out what paint, primers etc are compatible with your application. If you havent painted before I recommend picking up hoods and fenders so you can practice spraying to get comfortable before spraying your car.
