In another week I'll begin putting my new quarters on my car. While researching how I'm going to do this, I recently read that the E-Coating doesn't have to be removed prior to spot welding the quarters on, it acts as a weld-thru primer. Just make sure the old metal is ultra clean so as not to contaminate the weld. Any truth to this? Am I better off stripping the E-Coating around my spot weld holes?

I would be interested to know if that's true or not. I cleaned all of the e-coating off around my welds.

I don't think that is true, I have cheated in the past and anywhere there was black, it welded ugly.

Hit it with a 36 or 40 grit flexible grinding wheel and just peel the stuff off where you plan to weld. It doesn't have to be entirely stripped

Just to be clear... are you talking about a resistance spot welder? Or a Mig weld?? Personally I would think the spot weld should work. If you are talking about a mig weld I would gring down jst where you are going to be welding. Leave the rest of the e-coat.

No it make sloppywelds, use a scotchbright cookie buff wheel and angle grinder to simply buff it off near weld. Personally I would look for a true weld through galvanizing spray and dont forget to seal any seams asap or moisture can get in between panels very easily.

At our shop we allways remowe the e-coating before we do any welding, spot or mig..
