On a 50" TV will there be a noticable difference between the 720 & 1080 resolutions?

definitely... 1080p is way better, if your gonna spend that much cash on a tv, go for the 1080p, it will be well worth it

to me it depends on the price difference. I have both - the 720 is 50 inch plasma and the 1080 is 42inch lcd. I personally cant really tell any difference.

Most HD show on TV are going to be in 720, Blue Ray was the only thing that was in 1080 for awhile but eventually More tv will get to 1080 but unless you have them side by side with blue rays in both of them you wont tell much difference, but if you want are going to keep the tv for along time you might as well get the 1080 so when thing do go to full hd 1080p you will be ready! :)

We just bought 2 Samsung plasmas... a 42" 720p and a 58" 1080p. I honestly can't tell a difference using the composite or component ins when I'm sitting at the normal viewing distances. Unfortunately, I don't have any devices that have HDMI outs on them so I can't speak to that.

BTW, we got the 58" plasma (PN58B550) for under $1700, which made it a heck of deal for the screen size.

The resolution is one thing that will amke a difference when watching a true HD video or channel. What makes the biggest difference when watching action and especially sports is the refresh rate (60, 120 and now 240 Hz). The higher the refresh, the better sports look as there won't be any pixelation or distortion during high speed action like on a sweep play. Me, I wouldn't buy anything less than 120Hz, not for watching any sports at least.

Refresh rate is important, which is why good Plasmas usually have the advantage over LCD. True, there may be a rare instance where a cable company is broadcasting in 1080, but I doubt it. Blue Ray is the only real reason you need a 1080 set right now. However, if you are going to keep it a while, the cutting edge cable companies will be broadcasting on the 1080 at some point, might as well be able to take advantage.

It would be analogous to the difference between an old LP record and a digital CD sound.
The 1080P will be in perfect focus, specially the definition in the dark areas will be amazing.
720 looks pretty good, which is the average broadcast on some programs, and then you switch channels to a full 1080, it will blow you away.

I must be crazy, I can definitely tell the difference between 1080 and 720...

CBS sometimes broadcasts in 1080i, and I can definitely tell the difference from 720p.

I never had a chance to get 1080p on my set yet.

You can definitely tell a difference between 1080p and 720. My cable provider provides all the HD channels in 1080i so you can tell the difference right away. If you've ever looked at a true 1080p picture you will definitely see the difference as it actually takes some time to get used to the picture. All my friends would come over and be freaked out by the way it looked....they would say it looks "weird." Definitely go with the 1080p. I have a 46" 1080p 120hz Samsung LCD and love it.

I should qualify my earlier response... I haven't watched any HD programming on any of the sets I have. Perhaps when we pony up for the HD programming I'll notice a difference. But for watching regular cable, DVDs, PS2, Wii, etc., I can't tell a difference right now. And I should also say that anything, absolutely anything, is better than our old 36" top-of-the-line tube tv.

unless u do blu-ray, you won't tell a difference. it will be a while for 1080p tv if every because of data size. it takes a lot of bandwith to do 1080p and most tv stations/satellite won't do it. 720p/1080i are the same. actually 720p will be better. 1080i is basically 2- 540 line interlaced frame images that alternativley refresh every 1/60th of a second. 720p refreshes full frame for a smoother picture. its just a numbers game w/1080i.

A lot of it also depends on the viewing distance. Just another thing to throw into the mix.

I have 720 and 1080 tv's. The only time I can tell is during sporting events like football when they zoom in and follow a ball across the screen. Most of the time I can't tell.

Edit: I sit closer in the room with the 720 tv so that may be why I notice it more.

Got a 30 some odd inch 1080p lcd vizio tv for half price, only have dvd and vcr so I am at a loss, but a $600 tv for $299, and I am looking at a 26" for my mom as her old Zenith crt is getting older and she has cable.
I hope you have a large room as I was told a 50" needed something like 20 ft or more from screen to properly watch.

Who told you that crap? 20 feet probably exceeds the max viewing range of almost all displays. I've certainly been enjoying our 58" 1080p plasma from 8 feet away and have no complaints at all. The viewing distance depends on the TV display type (i.e. CRT vs. plasma/lcd/led etc.) and the picture resolution (i.e. 1080p vs 720p vs 480p etc.). In fact, here are a couple good articles for figuring viewing distances:

the bigger the tv size, the more important 1080 is - I have a 52" and 1080 is noticably better than 720, on the older 42" I had I didn't see the difference as being as on the 52". Non-HD programming looks better on the 42" set than the 52", it's getting a bit grainy as the 480 resolution isn't cutting it on the bigger set.
