After years of trying to stuff all my tools into a 24" roll around craftsmen tool box, I think its time to upgrade.
I am looking for something in the 42" range, bottom and top chests.
I have looked at craigslist, and found a lot of snap onm and macs, but even used they are $2000 and up.
Looked at sears, harbor fright, northern tool, and it seems theyare all priced about the same, looks like $1000 from any. Quality looks about thes same from all as well.
Is this the best bet or is there somewhere else I should look?
I would like to spnd no more than $1000.
Anyone have any suggestions, or have a box for sale?

Kobalt makes a killer box. It is probably the same one Frank is talking about. They even have one with a CD player and fridge.

I got a really nice one at Tractor Supply Company for cheap. It was a scratch and dent, but who cares - its a tool box :D
Nice strong doors, ball bearing sliders, etc.

A second for the Tractor Supply boxes. If I had more room (for the extra-wide one) and more money I'd be picking one of those up myself.

Sam's Club has some real nice ones right now that are stainless and the size you are looking for at around 6 to 9 hundred depending on the size and configuration. I have one similar and it is working great.

try hittin up grizzy...they make some damn fine tools and some awesome deals on boxes too...not too bad for the quality...i had a krl from snap-on and sold it...don't miss it one bit...i'd much rather have some good boxes from sears or lowes than spend the wad i did on the snap-on again...but alas, check the pro line of sears now and they look almost exactly like snap-on at almost the same price too...

I bought a Craftsman double stack 40-inch box at Sears.. they've been running it as a "black friday" half off deal for some time now. Cost me $699

Right now it's $899.. but it goes down to $699 if you keep an eye on it.
The CPK(?) box at Costco was a good deal when it was there. 40-inch stainless for $600.
Lots of good deals out there.. also, keep an eye on Craigslist for local used boxes for cheap.

Scratch and dent at Home Depot FTW. I bought my top and bottom combo (42 inch, IIRC) at the Depot for $400 as a pair. One small dent on the side, and, hey it may be home depot, but it still has 24 drwaers or so, soft close guides, etc. I think it was a good deal; I;m not a pro so its. good enough for me. You just gotta not only keep your eyes open, but make sure you always have money to buy when the chance comes up. Half the time that's the struggle.

Also dont knock snap on mac and matco, cornwell, etc. Go to their web sites, get hooked up with the local dealers, as they do sometimes wind up with scratch and dent, returns, repos, tradeins.
Friend of mine from previous job had a nice Mac top and bottom with tools for $2500 couple weeks ago, got another friend with a snapon its about 40 inch wide bottom only take over payments.
Big issue a lot of people have on name brand boxes is they dont think of resale value. I paid $6400 for my bottom box, and would get that much in trade to most good dealers. Now that box is $10,000, and as for buying less, forget about it a lesser box WOULD NOT hold up my load of tools.
I had a smaller mac box and it wasnt gonna hold up to a major load of heavy tools I have 3 times the front end tools that was in 3 drawers in one and there are more in the Snap on box single drawer and drawer is still smooth as glass like it was in 98 whe nI bought it.
Heck a lot of people say dont buy better, yada yada, but honestly you do get what you pay for.
The guy with mac box for sale, his old one got hit by car with no brakes, Firestone bought him a new box, mac guy knocked out the bad dents and sold it to another tech . Now while its a good box, it would never hold my tool load.
And my bottom box is 73x29 and well over waist high. I never figured it would be packed full in 10 yrs.

Just a heads up to anyone searching for a box. Check Craigslist first. Sometimes used is worth it!
As for store-bought boxes, Craftsman, Torin (Northern tool), and Harbor Freight boxes all roll off of the same assembly line in China. If you are going for the most bang for your buck, go to Harbor freight and get their box. I did tons of research when I was about to upgrade and found that they commonly share the same part numbers across the different name plates. If you throw a 20% off coupon on top of the already cheap price, you can get it for next to nothing.

I went to Sears...ordered myself a top and bottom kit. Went to Costco a couple days later and immediately called Sears and canceled my order. I got a nice 41" top and bottom kit. It's stainless steel and is very durable. I was surprised, the Craftsman one felt so flimsy compared to the Costco one.
Here's a pic of mine:

Here's a couple they have online now, both just under $1000
